What causes this condition?

Many women experience excess facial hair, especially as they age. The root of the problem: the overproduction of male hormones called androgens.

All women’s bodies generate these hormones, and commonly do so without producing excess hair. So long, that is, that hormone production levels stay normal. But several factors can pull androgen production beyond the normal.

Big factors here include heredity and obesity. Fat cells store androgens. Some medical conditions can lead to unwanted facial hair. Corticosteroid medications—prednisone, birth control pills, and hormone replacement treatments among these—can all affect hormone levels, too. Menopause can bring a decrease in the production of estrogen, also leading to darker and more prominent facial hair.

Natural Remedies for Removing Facial Hair

Many natural remedies offer beneficial effects for your skin and will help you remove that pesky facial hair! Here are a few common topical home treatments that work well when repeated a couple of times a week…

Lemon juice and honey. Apply a mixture of 1 tbsp. of juice and 4 tbsp. honey. Remove gently after 15 minutes.

Raw papaya and turmeric powder. Create a paste combining 1 to 2 tbsp. raw papaya with ½ tsp. of turmeric powder. Massage onto face. Rinse away after 15 minutes.

Oatmeal and banana. Create a paste with 1 ripe banana and 1 to 2 tsps. of oats and massage into area for 15 minutes. Rinse off with water.

Water and turmeric powder. Create a paste by combining 1 to 2 tsps. of turmeric with water. Wash off after 15 minutes.

Basil and onion. Remove the thin translucent film from between the layers of two onions. Crush 10 to 12 leaves of basil with the film to create a paste. Apply the mixture to affected area. After 15 minutes, rinse off.

Organic gram flour and turmeric powder. Create a paste using 1-2 tsp. of turmeric with ¼ cup of flour and water. Apply to area and leave until dry. Wipe away gently with a warm cloth.

These methods will require consistency and patience. A few applications won’t do it. Nor will spotty use. Consistency over many weeks is what you’ll need for success.

Turmeric for Clear Skin

It’s a cluster of natural processes working together that give these remedies their powerful practical value: exfoliating, cleansing, moisturizing, and anti-oxidant properties. The one ingredient that appears most often in good homeopathic recipes is turmeric. Turmeric has been used for many generations across many cultures, for radiant, healthy skin. My Comments: I have been a fan, follower and friend of Tonya Zavasta, for more then 10 years, and remember reading on her site, when she was still doing lectures and was looking for volunteers to arrange events for her. For the twenty-eighth interview, an exclusive, I have the immense pleasure of introducing you to Tonya Zavasta: Raw Food & Natural Beauty Advocate and Anti-Aging Expert, in business since 2002-2003.

Question #1: Tell me briefly about yourself and why you decided to get involved in the “health” industry?

I don’t think I ever made a decision, as such. Early on, it was simply about resolving my own issues. I was then facing some pretty heavy-duty surgery to fix congenital hip problems. I stumbled upon the raw foods message through the Paul Bragg’s book, Miracle of Fasting. And I knew this was the way for me—no looking back. The results astounded me. My health issues went away. My looks improved dramatically. I just couldn’t keep my discoveries for myself. I had to share my “secrets” of health and beauty with the world. That’s how I came to write my first book, Your Right to be Beautiful: The Miracle of Raw Foods.. I started a raw foods group in Memphis which I was leading for three years. Invitations to speak began coming in. Before I knew it, I was traveling with lectures and spreading the raw food message.

Question #2: What one message do you want to share with the people of this world that is crucial for their ultimate well-being and longevity?

Big question! Surely you’ll let me have two answers, won’t you?

First…It simply doesn’t work to cajole, beg, nag, or manipulate others to eat better and exercise. The best thing you can do for others—take care of your own health and happiness.

Be an example, an inspiration. Reflect others’ own goodness back to them. Show them, in yourself, what they can achieve with what they already have.

Second, quantum physics implies we create our own reality via our own thoughts, expectations, and beliefs. So it’s important to spread the message of longevity, youthfulness, and superb health. You can’t singlehandedly win the day—you need others to believe with you.

Another starling implication of quantum mechanics is that separability (between things, people…) is an illusion. So… we’re all connected. And what happens to each of us affects the rest of us. We rise and fall, fail and succeed, together. So you cannot be prosperous without wishing prosperity for others, you cannot be healthy without sharing the secrets of well-being with others, and you cannot get love without giving love to others.

Questions #3: If someone could afford to purchase only one product at this moment to start their journey towards better health (food or health-related), what would you recommend and why?

When I embarked on my 100% raw journey, I had high expectations. I daresay my health expectations were fulfilled in even greater degree than I expected. But beauty-wise, perhaps only 80%.

Eating predominantly (or exclusively) raw foods is very beneficial for your looks. But it’s not enough. That is the reason for my beauty products.

We need to take care of our skin externally. A daily beauty routine will make a big difference in how youthful your skin will look. My brush is probably the most important product you’d need. Why? Because exfoliation is a vital key to beautiful skin.

If I have a “beauty secret,” this is probably it…While most beauty mavens talk endlessly about being super gentle with your skin, my approach is dimetrically different. You need to train your skin to endure, to withstand aging. More in my ebook: Guide to an Ageless Face

Question #4: Tell me more about your business/company and/or products you offer to the public to help them achieve optimal health and well-being?

If you trace my company’s growth, you’ll see each product was initially developed because I, personally had a need for it. I offer for sale only what I use personally. Whomever you buy from, wouldn’t you want them to hold the same value?

When I couldn’t find a brush of just the right firmness to use on myself, I designed one. When you change your diet, your hair starts to change, too. You begin to shed more hair than usual. This is exactly what happened to me. Looking how to combat this issue, I developed a Scalp Tonic to improve hair growth, using the best known herbs for scalp stimulation.

When after age 50 I realized I needed to add a night cream to my beauty routine, I developed one from 100% natural oils, but with a creamy consistency. My newest product: RejuvaPad, for use under the eyes will be available in the end of April. Why did I develop it? Beause I’m 58 and I need to use it every day before going to bed.

Question #5: What are your hopes/aspirations/dreams for the future health of the people and the planet?

The physical world we live in is polarized. There can never be a plus without a minus. Never an up without down, an inhale without an exhale. Nor can there be health without sickness.

We can’t so much as appreciate health without knowing sickness. How many of us got up today and said thanks, that for example, our appendix didn’t hurt?

Health and sickness will always be intertwined. We need them both for our souls’ experience. My best lessons have come from pain.

I can’t really feel, in a sense, for the whole planet. But I do care greatly for people who have come to my website and are ready to tackle some serious anti-aging practices. It’s they who are my highest priority.

Question #6: Who is your greatest hero and why?

I guess I’m expected to answer something like All my life, my hero has been…But I really don’t have any heroes, in that sense. Truth is, you can learn from every person’s life.

I like people who inspire me. For example, I once read that a person was dancing at age 84. I got inspired. I wanted to do something like that, too. It’s invaluable to have such people around you or to read about them. They expand for you the perceived limits of what’s possible. That’s important because you can’t set out to accomplish anything you don’t believe is possible. Once you believe something is possible, then there is no limit to what you can accomplish.

Question #7: Is there anything else you would like to share with the public?

Quantum mechanics is changing our views of reality…and our views on how we can control what happens in our own lives.

Tribulations and challenges conspire against us. Most of us run. But if instead we embrace those challenges, learn from them…we’ll arrive at something better, vastly, unbelievably better.

Question #8: I know that there are variables as to how much food/calories each person consumes when eating raw vegan food (based on many lifestyle factors, etc), but is there a basic guideline you would recommend for everyone?

It’s not possible to have one plan for all. There are infinitely many variables! Every person is unique. So, no, there is no one, sure-fire recommendation. Your own body is your best guide.

Very important: read, read and read about how other people achived what you want. But always remember: Health is highly individual. Learn to experiment on your own body. Listen to its feedback and make changes accordingly. Keep what works. Change what doesn’t.

Don’t mimic anyone else. Get your own experience. Only personal experience will get you to a succesful raw food lifestyle. Somebody else’s experience won’t ever have this power. If you experiment intelligently, and you believe strongly that your chosen diet will assures you health and long life, it will.

How to Reverse and Prevent Gray Hair by Tonya Zavasta

At some point in our lives, just about every one of us will experience the onset of graying hair. What can be done to reverse or prevent gray?

What Causes Gray Hair?

Hair becomes gray when the cells in our hair follicles known as melanocytes cease to produce pigment, the chief one being melanin. Hairs are composed of an outer layer, known as the cuticle, made of overlapping flat cells and underneath is a thick cortex of protein called keratin. The inside of the hair are softer, rectangular cells. What determines the color of your hair is the concentration of pigment in the cortex. Many factors affect how, when and if the melanocytes cease producing their usual pigment. The chief culprit is aging, with heredity being the second biggest factor. Gray hair is the nearly inevitable accompaniment to aging. Graying’s cause: The cells in the bulb that are supposed to produce melanin are dead. They die for the same reasons other cells do. Poor assimilation, hormonal imbalances, and toxic waste buildup are contributing factors. On the nutrition side, graying hair comes from consuming salt, saturated fat, and protein. Another cause: an excess intake of simple sugars, which leach minerals from the blood, weakening the flow of nutrients to the hair. Starved and suffocated hair always turns gray, eventually. Emotional stress, worry, and shock can also significantly slow and in some cases even stop the production of melanin in the melanocytes.

Some other contributing factors can include:

Heredity
B12 deficiency
Thyroid imbalance
Low hydrochloric acid
Early menopause
Smoking (hopefully no longer an issue for any of my readers!)
Anti-Gray Pill

Have you heard? Soon there will be a pill that will stop us from going gray. Thank L’Oreal, the global cosmetics giant. You’ll have to start early, they say, and take the pill pretty much all your life. Swell. But it’s a pill that prevents gray. It can’t reverse it. No help to those of us who already have some gray. We’re told the pill is a “fruit peel.” It’s “totally natural.” Made from fruit extract. Now, I’m not entirely out of sympathy with the idea of the anti-gray pill or the motivation behind it. But let’s ask this: If this “fruit peel,” made from nothing but fruit extract, can truly deliver this anti-gray effect, wouldn’t eating fruit directly give you similar results?

Here’s the real story on anti-gray, as I see it, as I’ve experienced it…

Eat Raw for Your Hair
Not just fruits, but vegetables and other raw foods, combined in a sound nutritional program, can hold off your gray hair. Leading the raw food lifestyle definitely did slow down graying for me considerably. And I started at 39. Had I been eating raw all those years before, I believe, this might altogether have prevented any gray. Prevention is always easier than reversing. So here you have it, another reason to eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables. But can gray hair be reversed? In Oriental medicine the condition of the hair reflects the quality of your blood and the health of your kidneys. On the raw food diet we have the opportunity to address and correct the underlying causes, rather than just treating the external factors. Many people on raw food diet claim that their hair returned to its natural color. These include familiar names such as Ann Wigmore, Viktoras Kulvinskas, Victoria Boutenko, and Brenda Cobb. It is possible that one may benefit by consuming some of the following foods that are popular for addressing underlying causes of graying hair:

Greens, greens and more greens! Green Smoothies made in the Vita-Mix are one of the best ways to accomplish this. This also helps to build the levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which is also essential for mineral absorption.
Seaweeds
Nettle
Black sesame seeds
Wheatgrass juice (some people swear by this)
Oriental herb known as He Shou Wu
For those who wish to enlist the aid of external measures without relying on harsh or toxic chemicals, there are a few recommendations that might suit your tastes and your lifestyle. Remember you must be persistent.

Onion Juice

A 2009 study at England’s Bradford University found that one of the primary reasons for the graying of hair is a buildup of hydrogen peroxide in our follicles and scalp. This hydrogen peroxide can be successfully neutralized by the catalase enzyme. And where can we find that stuff? Answer: the humble onion. The remedy is simple: Just mix one part onion juice with one part lemon juice. Massage this into your scalp daily, then wash off.

Rosemary and Sage

Take a half cup of rosemary and a half cup of sage. Add in one cup of water and bring to a boil. Let the herbs simmer in water for 20 minutes. Wait for the mixture to cool completely. Apply it to your hair and scalp, leave it in for half an hour, then wash it off. This mixture helps blend the gray along with your natural hair color, making the gray less noticeable.

Consider the Violet Ray

Personally I believe a daily (even twice per day) 5 minutes massage of the scalp with the Violet Ray using the Comb or Rake electrode is the most effective tool for preventing gray. The earlier you start using it, the better. I started to use it in my early forties, when I already had some gray. Still, it allowed me to delay regular coloring for good 6 or 7 years. Many users find the Violet Ray beneficial for various skin and scalp conditions, such as reducing wrinkles, eliminating acne, fighting gray hair, eradicating dandruff, and stimulating hair growth. If you are able to secure some fresh amaranth leaves, applying the fresh juice of these leaves is said to be an effective home remedy. It also helps with growth. Wash hair with wheatgrass juice at least once per week (the nutrients penetrate into follicles and stimulate growth of new pigment-producing cells.) Apply a henna conditioning pack monthly. Henna is an all-natural plant powder available at most health food stores, which imparts color and conditioning without the use of harsh or carcinogenic chemicals. Follow directions closely for gray hair. Scalp Tonic from Tonya Zavasta – Another option is to try a stimulating scalp tonic which not only can help with gray hair, but also strengthens your hair and scalp by promoting tissue regeneration. Do what you can to reverse or prevent gray hair. But after all is done, always remember: Nothing is more beautiful than 60 or 70 year old woman who exudes a natural radiance. If that includes some gray, then so be it.

100% Raw Vegan to “Mostly Raw” Vegan – What has happened? I’m not a FAILURE, am I?!

There have been an interesting “turn around” in the “movement” of raw foodism (vegan). Some have stayed raw vegan a long time, such as, Dr. Fred Bisci – http://www.anydoubtleaveitout.com (over 40 years), Dr. Doug Graham – http://www.foodnsport.com (over 30 years), Storm Talifero – http://www.thegardendiet.com (over 30 years), Tonya Zavasta – click on either of the two banners on the right side bar to go directly to her website (14 years). Some seems to be heading in that direction, such as, Roger Haeske – http://www.rogerhaeske.com (10 years) and Andrew Perlot – http://www.raw-food-health.net (8 years). There are others known to the public who after being raw vegan for at least a few years or more, have decided to not eat “totally raw vegan,” but “mostly raw vegan.” They are not failures by any mean and are still eating a whole food in a plant based way (as recommended by Drs. John McDougall, Dean Ornish, Caldwell Esselstyn, T. Colin Campbell, Joel Fuhrman and Neal Barnard – I’m sure there are others, too that I have not named!).

I respect the people who have told the truth, more so then being “fakers” and telling others they must eat only raw vegan food or else (and then eat cooked vegan food in secret). At some point they may have been somewhat dogmatic and strict about their own adherence to raw veganism, but I give them the benefit of the doubt, as times change. Sometimes it has to do more so with cost and not that they do not want to stay 100% raw vegan. Others have added in cooked food because, for them individually (remember each person has a different “make-up”) and sometimes they are not absorbing the nutrients they particularly need by eating all raw vegan food.

I for one has experimented with many different ways within my 100% vegan lifestyle for over 20 years. I can tell you with absolute certainty that I will always eat in a whole food plant based way, no matter what. Personally, I prefer to be an all raw vegan and right now it is too costly for where I am living on the East Coast. On the West Coast of USA I was able to obtain an abundance of organic fruit that was much less expensive and did not have a need for cooked food. I am also right now doing a one month experiment with no sugars/fruit of any kind and am eating much more protein in the way of beans and more seeds because I need the calories. I plan to include fruit back into my plan next month and start eating those which are on the lower glycemic scale (like apples, pears, berries, etc even though I love the super sweet fruits like grapes, figs and persimmon). I will ease back into it and when I do eat higher glycemic fruit, I will try to balance it out more with greens (as in a green smoothie) as I find that it is a more balanced way to consume.

Noone consumes the exact same food, as we all have so many different variables where we need to eat more of one type or less of one type to keep the balance. One thing I do adhere to and suggest to everyone for better health, is to eat plant based whole food. If you make that one change, you will see your life evolve in many delightful ways and some that may surprise you, as you thought were never possible after having certain ailments/challenges for so many years (some resign to the fact that “it” meaning the dis-ease/itis, etc, has become part of you already and you have learned to “live with it”).

My Chewing Bliss Experience or How to Keep Warm in the Berkshires of Massachusetts

After reading the article by Tonya Zavasta (click on the pictures of Tonya on the right-hand side of the page to go to her website) in her May 2013 email newsletter entitled, “Practice This and Raw Success is Imminent,” I had to add my 2 cents or maybe 3 depending on how important you feel chewing your food/drink really is! Tonya mentioned a man named Lino Stanchich. It is amazing how those that love to do research (Tonya, for sure and I do the same) can find information that is very helpful to us in our journey in life – in whatever avenue you are studying.

I first began my journey to a healthy lifestyle in the Fall of 1990 by way of my friend, Eli Goldschmidt, who introduced me to macrobiotics by way of the book his aunt, Elaine Nussbaum wrote, called Recovery from Cancer. A few years later after graduating from college and already incorporating macrobiotics in my life (I have been vegan since 1991), I decided to get some formal education and studied at the Kushi Institute in Becket, MA.

I arrived in September 1993 and the weather was still very nice and balmy, but living in the Berkshires, it would eventually get very cold with snow that remains for months. One of my favorite teachers there was Lino Stanchich. This man has a “large” presence and the sweetest disposition. He is strong physically and speaks from his heart. He radiates a wonderful balance between the physical and spiritual. I liked him immediately and I developed a wonderful connection with him.

As Tonya indicated in the article, Lino’s father, Antonio, survived a Nazi concentration camp because he chewed his meager ration of food, as well as, his water. Lino told us that his father discovered that chewing his water not only quenched his thirst, it also gave him more energy. He shared it with other friends and most thought he was crazy and chose to “inhale” their food, but two people adhered to his instructions. When they were liberated, only Antonio and his two friends survived because of their practice of chewing.

There is actually more to the story, as told by Lino in one of our classes. Lino, himself, was in a labor camp later in years and always remembered how his father survived the concentration camp. Of course, he never practiced chewing his food before because he didn’t feel the necessity. Now, since his life was at stake, he knew that he had to follow his guiding light, his father, Antonio.

I remember Lino telling us that they could receive a small parcel and his mom sent him onions, salt and bread. Most times the packages were stolen, but who would want to take these things? As it so happens, Lino always received them. This was in addition to the rations that were provided. He chewed his food and water just as his father had done, 150 times or more per mouthful. In addition to that he closed his eyes while chewing and realized it strengthened him even more. From his experiences in the camp Lino became a tough man. When he came home his brother told him that if he would see him walking down a dark alley he would have given over his wallet without being asked. Lino had this “presence” that seemed fierce like a lion ready to attack.

In sharing this story, Lino wanted to impart on us the importance of chewing your food and drink (sounds like it would be hard to chew your liquid, but it is actually possible/doable and takes practice). To takes this message further, he decided to have a “Chewing Class.”

I remember that his class took place in the evening and the weather was already getting chilly outside (this point is key for what happens later). Lino had for each student a small tea cup filled with cooked brown rice. His instructions to us were to take the amount of rice equal to an inch long and put it in our mouth and chew it. He set a timer, I believe for 1 minute, and we were to count how many times we chewed that small morsel of rice before swallowing it.

It was hard at first to chew that tiny bit of rice many times without swallowing it right away. As I continued to do it, I found that I was able to keep chewing for much longer by keeping the rice closer to the front of my mouth. When you chew grains, such as rice for 100’s of times per bite and the ptyalin (definition: A form of amylase in the saliva of humans and some animals that catalyzes the hydrolysis of starch into maltose and dextrin) in your mouth gets mixed with it, the grain becomes sweet like sugar and it is almost too sweet and hard to swallow (I experienced that). Another important point is that when food is chewed into a liquid form in the mouth (which is truly where the digestion begins) it is already broken down and can be absorbed readily into the body.

After we completed eating our small teacup of rice and the class was over, I felt much different then I ever had before. I was not hungry, for one, but more importantly, I had an internal warmth inside of me that I never experienced before. I walked outside without a jacket/coat and did not feel cold for even a second. It was amazing! Not only that, but it so happened that, that night was a full lunar eclipse and I stayed up most of the night to see it (living up in the mountains in Western Massachusetts there is no light pollution and you can see every star, satellites, shooting stars, etc with such luminescence, definition and brilliance that it takes your breath away and it is truly a miracle of G-d) and went out continually without any need, other then the clothes I was wearing.

To take it one more step, I decided to continue the experiment and would eat all 3 meals a day in a quiet area and consciously chewed. I don’t remember how long I kept this up, but the results were visible. For one, I noticed that I filled up my plate with a lot of food and as the days went by, I would eat less and less, as I chewed more and more. The satiation point for our body is approximately 20 minutes and then the need to eat goes away. If you don’t chew the food well you will still feel hungry because you are not absorbing properly. By chewing so diligently, I was always full sooner and ate much less (most people tend to overeat anyway, so this is a great experiment to see for yourself how much food you really need).

Another result I noticed was that I was much more calm and serene since I took the time to eat with intention. It became a meditative experience. The final result was one that others told me because I could not “see” it for myself. I don’t remember how many days it was into my experiment (I would have to check the journal I kept, but I don’t know where it is, at the moment), but other students and people who would there started to notice a glow/aura around my body that radiated outward. I shared with them what I had been doing and it definitely made a difference to them so perhaps they would try it, as well.

Now you see the power of chewing, both from someone who had to do it out of sheer will to survive (Antonio and his son, Lino) and myself, who choose to do it and experienced such dramatic and profound results. I challenge you to try this for yourself, even for one meal. Put a timer on for 1 minute and put a small amount of food on your fork/spoon and see how many times you can chew it. Do this as many times until you feel full. I know it will be difficult at first, so persevere and know it will be beneficial to you in the end.

I hope the world is never going to be in a state where we will need to chew our food/water very well in order to survive, so don’t wait for that, do it because you’ll thrive! I want to thank G-d for bringing me this wonderful teacher and many others, as well. I will treasure the time I spent in Becket as it has given me the foundation for where I am today!

Update to my experience with chewing written on December 30, 2013:

I was looking through some of my notes from when I studies at the Kushi Institute in 1993 and found the Journal that I kept on a daily basis. On the daily dairy for 10/12/1993, I wrote about the experience with chewing, as follows: Class with Lino about chewing – even though was in it Level One (this is Level Two), it’s good, anyway, to do it again with a group. Afterwards went for a walk outside (at night). It felt cold at first. I found my gloves on the floor when I put my shoes on. I wasn’t cold at all! I even took my gloves off half-way through. Air nice and clean. Felt energized and wonderful. When I chewed the rice, did it 3 times for 1 minute each time, using only 1 inch of rice. Each time chewed progressively more: 210, 220 and 385 times. I was so warm and my hands were not cold at all! Couldn’t believe it was only 44 degrees Fahrenheit!

Saturday June 1, 2013 @ 8:45pm – Beginning of Fast

Tonight I decided to start my fast. Since the Sabbath starts on Friday night, I would only do it for 6 days in total. It is forbidden to fast on that day, because it is a day to be in joy and fasting is done mostly for suffering/mourning. Not to say that it is suggested that one fast all the time. In the Jewish tradition we have fasts a couple times a year that are required and other that are recommended. This type of fasting is DRY FASTING. This means that you neither eat nor drink for a full day.

I, myself have done dry fasting (aside from the religious ones and when I initially started at 12 years of age, it was more difficult, as I did not have the same food habits as I do now) for as long as 3 and 3/4 days prior to now. The first time I read about this was in a book by Tonya Zavasta, “Quantum Eating.” (Click on the picture of Tonya on the right-hand side of this page to go directly to her website). In the book, she mentions that the Russsians use this as a manner of treatment for many different ailments/diseases under medical supervision, of course. One doctors mentions that you can go as long as 14 days without consumption of water/food. After I read this part of the book, I decided to try this for myself for a day and felt wonderful (I have done various types of cleansing programs since 2004 and feel comfortable with trying out things like this on my own and know what to expect, but I don’t suggest this for anyone to do on their own).

After that, whenever I did a cleanse, I would first dry fast for as long as I could do so. I do not find it hard at all because my body has gotten used to it. Tonight I went to sleep and felt fine because I had a meal before going to sleep.

Sunday June 2, 2013 – First full day of Dry Fast

The first day I did have elimination twice and some urination, too. Of course, not as much as when I consume my normal fare. I felt fine today with no problems at all. I do not engage in any activities such as intensive exercise when I do any of my fasts/cleanses. I may still do some activity, but keep it at a minimum to conserve my energy. I went out in the afternoon for a short while to spend some time on nature. I did feel a bit more tired and went to sleep by 10pm.

Monday June 3, 2013 – Second day of Dry Fast

I eliminated once this morning and urinated, too. I still had some urination today, but much less then usual and was a deeper yellow color. I still do not feel the need to drink anything. The weather has also been cooler outside, so that probably helps, as well. I felt ok, for the most part and stayed home all day. I went to bed earlier then usual because I was tired – by approximately 10pm.

Tuesday June 4, 2013 – Third day of Dry Fast

Still had some elimination this morning. Feeling no need for water. I know that I will probably dry fast longer then previously, but I will pay attention to how I feel so I will know if I need to drink or not. So far, I do not feel dry in the mouth or dehydrated. Most people would not do this and again, I don’t recommend it at all! I also have been doing this in the city and not in the mountains with pristine air and no noise/light pollution. I am also not resting exactly the way it would be best for me to have the optimal results – meaning no phones, computers, reading, driving, etc.

Tonight I went to sleep closer to 11pm, but did not sleep well. I woke up and stayed up for a while. I started to notice a build up of mucus near the tip of my eyes in the inside part close to the tear duct. It was more then I usually see when I wake up in the morning.

Wednesday June 4, 2013 – Fourth day of Dry Fast

I woke up and when I tried to open my eyes, they were “glued” shut from the mucus build up around my eyes. I had to clean it out with water by the sink. Throughout the day, I continued to have more mucus in my eyes. I tried to used my fingers to clean it out, but that wasn’t the optimal way. I irritated my eyes and they were getting red and dry. Instead I used water to flush them. For you to understand more in detail what was happening with my eyes: as I would blink my eyes, after a while I could see there was some cloudiness in them and then it moved down to my lower lids and the mucus would stay there until I removed it. I never had this happen when I have a done a fast/cleanse, in the past. I would usually have mucus leave my body through my nose or throat.

Today I only had urination minimally, but no elimination. I still did not feel thirsty or the need to drink any water. I decided to go out and do some shopping and errands. I was out for a couple of hours and got everything done. I did feel a bit worn out when I came home, so I rested for a while. I went to bed tonight about 11pm. I went to sleep, but woke up again in the middle of the night. My eyes were glued shut again and I had to wash them out. I stayed awake and worked on the computer until my eyes were shutting.

Thursday June 6, 2013 – Fifth day of Dry Fast/Cleanse

When I woke, my eyes were glued shut again from the mucus and were a bit red and irritated. All day I had to wash them out because the build up was constant. I did not have a bowel movement today. I was still urinating some. My tongue had a heavy white coating on it, as well. I felt ok, but decided anyway, that I would end my dry fast at 4 and 3/4 days. Since I’d begin eating some food tomorrow night, I wanted to get some fluids into my body before that time.

I had my first cup of water at 2:45pm and then some Harmless Harvest raw organic coconut water (I have a review of their company on my blog, for a cleanse that I did – search in the archives for it). My head was not used to the fluid and had to adjust to it. I actually felt more tired after drinking because now my body had to start working to digest it, whereas before it was in a different state of existence without having to do much “work.” Digestion is work and takes energy. I drank some more water and also finished the 16oz bottle of the coconut water by the end of the day.

I went to sleep by about 11pm and felt more weary and had less energy then when I consumed nothing at all. It is amazing how the body works and to see for myself how I would feel. Of course, I could probably do it longer, but I would have to take a break for the Sabbath and then start over again for another six days. I may try that at another point or else try to do this once a month to give my body a “true” rest so it can heal properly. The body does not heal when it is “busy” digesting, rather when you are sleeping it can renew and rejuvenate itself.

Friday June 7, 2013 – Sixth/last day of Cleanse

I woke up twice in the night. Once was to wash out my eyes because they were glued shut from the build up of mucus. I got up again at about 5:20am to wash out my eyes again from the build up and to urinate. I went back to sleep and awoke at 9am. I felt more sluggish then yesterday when I awoke (perhaps because I was not used to consuming anything, that even having the water and coconut water took more processing for my body and it had to adjust to it). My neck felt tight and my eyes were glued shut again and I had to wash them out. I did urinate and eliminate a small amount this morning. I noticed that my tongue still had a heavy white coating.

I decided to clean my bathroom thoroughly this morning and it took a toll on my energy, so I lay down on my bed for a while. I drank some coconut water and water at ~11am and then again at 2:30pm. I feel a bit more energetic. I had some slight mucus around my eye today, but nothing like I had yesterday, thank G-d!

I drank again some coconut water at ~ 4pm and then again at 5:20pm. I finished the 16oz bottle and that is all I had for today. I am still feeling a bit sluggish, but not as much as this morning. I did clean my room (dust and wash the floor) to get ready for the Sabbath, as I like it to be clean for this special and Holy Day!

Tonight I will eat for the Sabbath, but have a small amount of blended fruit and chew it well because my stomach has shrunk and I have to get used to food. I plan to take it slowly to equal the amount of days I have not eaten so my body can resume its regular food consumption. If I eat too much, too fast I tend to get a headache, bloating and gas and that is not an optimal way to come off of a fast/cleanse.

Book Review – The Science of Eating Raw by Swayze Foster

Book Review:The Science of Eating Raw by Swayze Foster

Mindy’s quote: “Swayze has done all the research/hard work all you have to do is simply read and apply it to your life!”

I am happy to say that I was one of the people who received an advanced free copy of the book along with all the bonuses because I gave a testimonial that was used in the back of the book. This book has been a long time coming and Swayze has done an excellent job! You can tell from all the proofs/references that are included in the back of the book (68 pages worth – WOW!) She leaves no stone unturned when it comes to sharing with the skeptics and even those like me who has been a vegan for over two decades, but don’t have all the answers. You can not refute the truth and the myths/fallacies, either.

Swayze has covered everything from “soups to nuts,” so to speak. Whether you are not sure you ought to eat low-fat, feel that eating lots of fruit has too much “sugar,” why you ought to be vegan, why eat raw, why no grains, why fruit doesn’t cause cancer, etc. She also covers topics that have been “closeted” by many other so called raw food gurus and experts such as a whole chapters on supplementation and nutritional deficiencies (to make sure you are getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to thrive).

The chapter on essential micronutrients gives a sample raw low fat vegan menu for a day that breaks down the amount of dietary guidelines for each vitamin/mineral and each meal. It is great to see from these charts that you can get the nutrients your body needs when you eat this way. In another chapter, Swayze gives a sample 7 day raw vegan menu plan and the percentage of carbohydrates-protein-fat to eat in one day. You will see that you can be satisfied/sated and also stay within the realm of eating low-fat (according to 80-10-10 program initiated by Dr. Doug Graham and in his book, 80/10/10 that is available on Amazon.com).

Swayze also makes a great point in mentioning that you need to have testing done to make sure you are absorbing certain nutrients (especially for Vitamin D and B12 of which there are endless discrepancies: “to take or not to take a supplement that is a BIG question?”).

From reading this book in its entirety, I see that Swayze has covered “all the bases!” Your part is easy because all you have to do in buy it and read it. The information is clear, informative, straight-forward and relevant. At a time when so many people are searching desperately for answers and keep coming up against so many “brick walls,” so to speak (the doctors, hospitals, drugs, surgeries are not giving them health or happiness), it is now possible to get a better understanding on how to approach the care of your own body with the simple tools that Swayze has “spelled” out in the book in such a well-thought out manner.

There is TMI (Too Much Information) accessible to us, especially by way of the Internet and not all of it is good, positive, real or true (especially when it comes to your health). Some of the great resources out there are people like Dr. Doug Graham, Swayze Foster, Dr. Neal Barnard, T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Tonya Zavasta, etc. YOU MUST DO YOUR RESEARCH TO FIND THE TRUTH!

I doesn’t have any criticism about the content of this book only that there are some typos, wrong words used, reference number was printed in large type face when ought to have been small (I can help you, Swayze, with that for the next book you write, as I have excellent proofreading, editing skills, etc – I am a writer, too, it case you could not tell by now! 🙂

Swayze mentions a couple of products to use for your dental hygiene. A great one that I use is from a company called Essential Oxygen. The owner created the product because of her poor dental health and the lack of anything on the market that would help her. Also mentioned in another part of the book, is the consumption of green leafy vegetables. Swayze mentions about eating spinach for a week or longer without any problems. I disagree with that statement – I don’t have the scientific proof to show here, but have heard from numerous reliable sources that it is important to rotate your greens because in nature the plant use a mechanism to help them continue to self-propagate whereas they has small amount of poisons on them (doesn’t harm you in small amounts) and if you eat too much of that plant it will no longer taste good to you. I can give a personal example as I enjoy eating baby spinach straight from the bag without putting anything on it. If I eat too much (it is easier to tell when you are only consuming one food at a time and not mixing with many other ingredients) then my mouth becomes dry and I don’t want to eat anymore of the spinach. It is east to rotate your greens, as there are endless choices, from Swiss chard to Red Leaf lettuce, Romaine lettuce, Spinach, Kale, Collard Greens, etc.

Besides Swayze’s new book, she has a great website where you can find numerous free articles, videos, etc. There is a never ending stream of knowledge we can garner from others. No matter how much we think we know there is always more to learn. Always keep your mind open like a child, but still remember that you may need to filter things out, as well. Not everyone believes that this lifestyle it optimum or the best, but if it works for you and you feel great and are getting all your nutrients, then don’t let alone tell you otherwise.

I do not recall from whom I found out about Tonya Zavasta (I know it was on the Internet), but I am sure glad I did! I started subscribing to her monthly email newsletter and found/find the information to be invaluable. I also read at the bottom of the email that they were looking for people who would organize events that she can speak at regarding raw foods, beauty and anti-aging secrets. I was very interested and contacted Tonya. I set up some events in San Diego during 2008 and that is when I first met this incredible woman! Whether you are a newbie to raw foods or a “seasoned veteran”, you can and will always learn something new. Never discount that regardless of the amount of knowledge you have about any/many different subjects/topics, someone may share with you something you have never heard before. Keep that “childlike” enthusiasm alive and always have a “beginners mind,” and take that “whatever course 101” again and again!

I was able to garner some time alone before the event to speak with Tonya. I enjoyed our conversation and listened intently to what she had to say. She has an incredible story/journey of recovery from a physical deformity and completely turned her life around. A “side affect” to that was how her body transformed in a few years and the pictures are WOW! because she looks “model” beautiful and years younger then the photo taken pre-raw food. Tonya did/does not “rest on her laurels,” when it comes to finding new ways to improve her health and beauty and share that with the public. She has written books and developed products (that are researched with degrees of intensity that are commendable and show in the depth of information in her books and the highest quality of her products). I have read Tonya’s books and tried many of the products with great results.

All of Tonya’s books – both physical and e-books – have so much to offer you the reader. Besides the research and depths of proof to her information, she is all humorous (that came through in her presentations and added a lightness and levity amongst the group who attended). It is probably time for me to go back and re-read the 4 books I have and also the e-books. As much as I am a person who is self-motivated, it is always helpful to get a “refresher” once in a while. There is so much amazing information in Tonya’s books that I don’t think I remember it all after I read them years ago.

I had the pleasure of using Tonya’s facial exercise program and wrote a testimonial about my experience which is posted on her site. I have also used her anti-aging face cream, facial brush for glowing complexion, multi-herbal green clay masque, masque removal brush, skin rejuvenator/rolling bed of pins, scalp tonic with cayenne pepper and mustard greens extracts, bamboo comb and siberian pine chewing gum. Everything Tonya sells is made without any compromises. If she will not use it in/on her own body/skin then you will not find it being sold on her website. She told me that when she developed her first product, the face cream, it took a long time to find someone who was willing to formulate it with ONLY the ingredients that she specified and nothing else! It it easy to just put some chemically enhanced ingredients together, but you will come out with crap and Tonya was/is never willing to do that. When you walk your talk, you become an example people want to follow/emulate. I know, I do and consider Tonya a friend and mentor.
