Can Raw Foods DESTROY Your Teeth? by Frederic Patenaude

Can Raw Foods DESTROY Your Teeth? by Frederic Patenaude
You know all of the health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, but did you know that eating only raw foods could potentially put your teeth at risk?

That’s according to a study that showed that a raw food diet increases risk of dental erosion compared to a conventional diet.

How does raw food affect your teeth, and what can you do to protect them?

What the Study Showed

Researchers from Germany studied 130 subjects whose diet consisted of more than 95 percent raw food. The median duration of the diet was 39 months, with a minimum of 17 months, and a maximum of 418 months.

These participants answered questionnaires recording their food intake during a 7-day period before starting the study.

Researchers then randomly selected 76 gender- and age-matched participants for use as a control group. Using study models, they then registered tooth decay in both groups.

Their findings? Compared to the control group, subjects living on a raw food diet had significantly more tooth decay. 60.5 percent of the raw food eaters had at least one tooth with a severe decay, versus 31.6 percent of the control group.

Why Did This Happen?

Researchers aren’t sure why. They noted that within the raw food group, they could find no significant correlation between nutrition or oral health data. Nevertheless, the results showed that raw food eaters were more at risk.

One thing to note is the high amount of fruit eaten by the raw foodists. The raw food diet records showed that people in the raw food group ate an average of 9.5 kg (21 pounds) of fruit per week. (The maximum amount consumed for one person was 23.7 kg (52 pounds!), which is a lot of fruit!)

It’s no secret that although fruit has many health benefits, it can also be high in sugar and acidity, which is a double whammy for teeth.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has advised that the safest approach when eating apples is to eat them only at mealtimes, (and then rinse out the mouth to minimize tooth damage).

Added to that is the fact that the sugar content of apples (and likely other fruits) has increased by up to 50 percent over the last couple decades, as farmers breed varieties to have a sweeter taste.

New research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that the typical modern apple now has a sugar content of up to 15 percent. This means it contains the equivalent of four teaspoons of sugar.

A BDA spokesperson noted that once enamel is worn away, it doesn’t regenerate.

“Research shows that dental erosion in adults due to diet is usually a result of excessive consumption of fruits and fruit juices.”

Other Potential Causes

The aforementioned research is only one study.

It had a relatively small number of participants.

However, it brings up an important concern. Can a raw food diet be stressful for your teeth?

It’s safe to say that if your diet contains a lot of fruit, your teeth can be at risk. Beyond that, we need more research to discover the answers.

Some raw foodists who have experienced teeth problems after switching to raw have some additional theories.

Eating more often may be part of the issue. Once switching to a raw diet, you may find yourself grazing. Even if you’re snacking on healthy foods, frequent eating can disrupt the natural remineralization of your tooth enamel. Typically after you eat, your saliva goes to work rebuilding enamel.

However, if your saliva is constantly breaking down more food, and if that food is more sugary and acidic, your tooth enamel is more likely to suffer.

Another possibility is that due to the increased intake of nuts, dried fruit, and dehydrated foods food more easily becomes lodged between teeth where it is hard to remove. The longer food debris stays stuck on or between teeth, the easier for bacteria to attack.

How to Protect Your Teeth While Enjoying a Raw Food Diet (and Fruits!)

The answer, fortunately, is not to stop eating fruits or nuts or other great raw foods. The answer is to consider changing how you take care of your teeth in between meals and snacks.

One thing to be careful of—brushing right after eating an acidic food is actually worse for your teeth than doing nothing at all. Acid breaks down enamel, leaving your teeth vulnerable. Enamel softened by an acid attack can be scrubbed away by the toothbrush.

Why Raw Foodists Have Bad Teeth by Frederic Patenaude

Why Raw Foodists Have Bad Teeth by Frederic Patenaude
For years, I’ve been warning raw vegans, Paleo enthusiasts, juicing fans, fruit eaters, smoothie addicts and vegans to take care of their teeth.

What I have observed is:
* I high incidence of dental decay among raw foodists, 1-2 years after they switch to the diet

* A high incidence of gum recession and enamel erosion among raw foodists (this does not mean 100% raw. Anyone who eats a lot of fruit or drinks fresh juices or smoothies should care.)

Dramatic dental problems in people who stick religiously to certain diet principles without questioning them.
In my early days, I’ve had my share of dental problems myself as a direct result of following the raw diet incorrectly. I have also met at least several hundred people who have gone through similar issues.

I’ve been talking about this for a number of years now, and I’m glad that people are finally listening!

This is truly the “weak link” of the raw diet, and it applies to anyone eating a healthy diet!

There are a lot of positive aspects to eating more raw foods.

But… a person can experience many wonderful benefits while changing their diet, and watch with horror as their dental health goes downhill.

And it’s not just raw vegans… vegetarians also must watch out. In fact, anyone who eats healthier!
We know that raw foods contain more acidity. But healthy eaters also consume more cooked vegetables, and acidity can be increased in those vegetables when you roast them.

Peta Bee writes in the Daily Mail:

“Dentists at the University of Dundee found that different cooking methods could increase the acidity of vegetarian dishes, such as roasted vegetables. Exposure to high temperatures produced chemical changes that made the acid more concentrated, and more damaging to teeth. In particular, the acidity level of zucchini, peppers, onions and eggplants increased when roasted.”

So what’s going on here?

The Two Culprits

At this point, if you have the least interest in eating a healthier diet, you should start reading very, very closely.

Dental decay is not caused by eating the wrong diet.

Dental decay is the result of the proliferation of certain types of bacteria in the oral environment. The bacteria eliminate acid waste that eat into your teeth and cause decay.

It’s all about the terrain!

If your oral terrain (the environment) is healthy, you could eat Cheetos and drink Coke all day, and you wouldn’t even get cavities.

When people change their diet, they become a dental health time-bomb. Their bacteria count is a little too high, but not high enough to cause major problems.

Suddenly, they start eating more often, because they eat foods that are not as dense in calories. They drink juices. They drink smoothies. They eat a lot of fruit.

This acid and sugar create a giant feast for the bacteria which feed on them.

The real culprits are the bacteria. But the terrain is determined by:

– Acidity
– Sugar

It’s not all about the food you eat! If you can control the level of acidity in your mouth, you can eat foods that contain acids and sugar, and you’ll be fine.

But, if your oral terrain is not under control, you’ll never be able to eradicate dental problems for life.

You want your bacteria count to be as low as possible.

You want to avoid bacteria forming into colonies and creating their little civilization in your mouth!

If your oral environment is clean… and ALKALINE… it doesn’t matter if you eat dates or raisins all day.

The Only Solution

The only way to prevent dental decay for life and reverse a bad situation is to take active control of your oral environment. Just controlling your diet does not address the root of the problem.

You can create a simple, daily dental hygiene routine that will prevent 95% of problems.

And then, you can do simple things with your diet to control the remaining 5%, like avoiding snacking and being careful with the amount of acid foods you consume.

My 10 Day Trial Using Herbal Face Food™ from Self Health Revolution

For more information about this company, go to: http://www.herbalfacefood.com

Check out my introductory video about the product on my youtube channel:
Herbal Face Food™ – Part 1: Introduction

I wanted to write down and share my experiences with others who may be interested in trying this product for themselves. I wanted to take daily pictures, but since I am using my iPad 2, it is not so sharp and clear, as it is not the most up to date camera and photos tend to be somewhat blurry, but I tried to take them as close up as possible, so I am not hiding how my face looks, even if I have an issue with it. I embrace and accept who I am, while always trying to improve myself using the best natural, holisitic and healthy methods/products that I research and are available to me and also give you an honest and detailed review of them. Therefore, you will not be seeing any pictures and will have to watch the video to see my results after 10 days of use.

Disclaimer: I was not sponsored to write this review, but I did receive a sample of the product(s). These are strictly my opinions. I only review products that I, myself would use and purchase.

Day 1- Wednesday 2/15/17

My AM experiences:
I following the directions to have a clean dry face before applying. I shook the bottle well, as it is very concentrated and tends to separate when left standing. I squeezed from the dropper bottle, 5 drops and then applied all over my face and my neck, although they say to put on the most pronounced problem areas. It can also be applied to your skin, other then your face, if you like. Be extra careful when applying and also after, especially around the sensitive areas of your eyes, nose and mouth and to not apply in too close to them, as you will feel a hot, tingling sensation, as soon as you put in on your skin. I mentioned after, as you want to wash your hands well with soap and not touch your face in the wrong places). I put it on around 10:45 am and immediately felt the hot sensation (unlike a HOT flash, as this actually means the product is working) and it did not dissipate completely for about 15 minutes. My face did not get flushed, as that can also happen. It did not bother me having that occur, as I know it is supposed to.

I smelled the thyme more then anything else, and it lingers on your face for a while.
As an added bonus, it is also aromatherapeutic to breathe in the scent.
So if you do not want to have that smell stay with you (but not sure others can smell, unless get really close to you and also, if they do not care for that scent) and have to go out somewhere, make sure to do it early enough, so it have time to dissipate, as you do not put anything else on over the serum.

My PM Experiences:
I decided to put on the skin serum before I brushed my teeth, but I do not suggest you do that, as you have to wash your hands very well with soap to make sure you do not get any residue in your mouth, especially when floss your teeth (as I do that first). I washed my hands twice with soap to be sure I would not get any in my mouth. The reason I did it this way, is because I thought it would take a while for the hot sensation to level off and wanted to give that time to happen before going to sleep. To my pleasant suprise, the second time using the skin serum, on my ehole face and neck, at 9:45 pm, I got the sensation immediately upon applying and then it seemed to linger in certain areas of my face, but the peak was only for about 5 minutes and after 10 minutes, did not feel anything. My face, is perhaps, adjusting to it and will see if anything changes or stays the same on day 2.

Day 2- Thursday 2/16/17

My AM Experiences:
I checked in the mirror to see if I noticed any changes to my face since using the skin serum for one day, but there was no noticeable difference. I put on the product early in the morning, at 7 am. I would usually prefer to put it on at the same time, daily, but it depends on my schedule. I did not take pictures of my face early this morning, as when I tried, to do so with lights on in my place (as was not enough natural light), the photo was not clear, so will have to do it later in the day. I also want to take the photos, at the same time daily, but circumstances, do not always allow for that. I will try to be as consistent as possible throughout this trial.

I want to also make an important point that you need to wash your hands well (I wash them twice) with soap after using the skin serum, to make sure there is no residue afterwards as you do not want inadvertently touch your eyes, nose or mouth with the product still on your hands.

After putting on the serum, I felt the hot burning sensation immediately and then it dissipated after 5 minutes, but still felt some tingling in the first 10 minutes. Seems that my face is getting more comfortable with it.

My PM Experiences:
I put on the skin serum at 11 pm. I still have the initial intense heat and tingling at first and then dissipatd after sbout 7 minutes, but this time felt the tingling in a milder sense for about another 5 minutes.

Day 3- Friday 2/17/17

My AM Experiences:
I am not sure I noticed any changes to my face, as yet, when looking in the mirror. I applied the serum at 10:05 am and still hot and tingling strong for the first 5 minutes and then lessens, but still feel it for the next 5 minutes or so. The skin on my cheeks closer to my eyes looks a bit redder, as does my chin, right after application, so may be that is the facial flushing response. I will see if that goes away later on.

My PM Experiences:
The redness on my face did go away from the morning. I had to put on the serum earlier this evening, as tonight is The Sabbath and can not put it on once it starts, as is forbidden to out on any creams/lotions on the skin. I applied it at 5:10 pm and was hot and tingling strong for about 5-7 minutes and on my chin and under my eyes, it seemed to linger a bit longer. I still am not sure I see any difference on my face, especially the area I am focusing on, namely my chin.

Day 4- Saturday 2/18/17

My AM Experiences:
I did not apply the skin serum this morning and this was written after the Sabbath ended on Sat. night, as I do not write during the day. I am not able to apply any creams/lotions on my skin, so will have to make up and put on an additional morning. I will apply it tonight.

My PM Experiences:
I applied the serum at 1:50 am, which is Sun. morning, as I went to bed late. Was thinking to do it earlier, but did not want to apply before brushing my teeth, as mentioned in a previous day. I had the hot and tingling sensation for about 5-7 minutes and then dissipated.

Day 5- Sunday 2/19/17

My AM Experiences:
I still can not tell if there are any noticeable changes to my face. I applied the serum at 11:35 am and was hot and tingling for about 5 minutes and then still felt for another 5 minutes, but not as intense.

My PM Experiences:
I put on the serum at 8:50 pm and have same experiences as this morning. First 5 minutes are most intense with hot and tingling sensation and then once gets to 10 minutes is mostly dissipated, excelt for areas that focusing on more add a bit more of the product, namely, the chin and under the eyes.

Day 6- Monday 2/20/17

My AM Experiences:
Applied the serum at 5 am. Still not sure seeing any differences to my skin. Ingense heat and tingling for 5 minutes and then lessened after that.

My PM Experiences:
I was unable to apply the serum tonight, as I am involved in a sleep study, and had my face covered with electrodes. I will likely add another application to make up for this, as want to be sure have a full 10 days, morning and night of application.

Day 7- Tuesday 2/21/17

My AM Experiences:
Was able to apply the serum this morning at 6:55 am after all the electrodes were removed from my face. Same experiences with hot and tingling for 5 minutes amd then lessens within 10 total minutes. Still do not notice any changes to my skin, but maybe I am not seeing it and is happening anyway or tsking longer for me to be aware of it.

My PM Experiences:
Since I did not get to apply the serum last night, I decided to put it earlier today, so I do not miss using it 2x per day again, as tonight, I will be unable to do so, as it’s my 2nd and final night for this sleep study. I applied the serum at 1:55 pm, so that is 7 hours since the morning application and then it will have time to absorb in, till late this evening when the electrodes will be placed on my face. Have the same responses, as previous with the 1st 5 minutes feeling intense heat and tingling on the face and then not much by 10 minutes after application.

Day 8- Wednesday 2/22/17

My AM Experiences:
I applied the serum at 10:40 am. Still have the same intense hot and tingling sensation on my face for 5 minutes and then less by about the 10 minute mark.

My PM Experiences:
Got home late from a trip, so ended up putting on the serum on my face at 1 am. Still same intensity as previous days.

Day 9- Thursday 2/23/17

My AM Experiences:
Still do not notice any visible changes in my face, but maybe they are very suttle, so hard for me to tell, I really can no say. I applied the serum on my face at 11:40 am with same intensity as mentioned previously.

My PM Experiences:
I applied the serum to my face at 10:30 pm, with same experience as mentioned on other days.

Day 10- Friday 2/24/17

Although this is technically the last day of thhe 10 day trial using the skin serum, I as not able to use the serum cosistently day and night a couple of times during this time period, so I will be continuing writing this for a couple more applications after today.

My AM Experiences:
Applied the facial serum at 10:50 am, same exoeriences as previously mentioned

My PM Experiences:
Applied the serum at 5:30 pm, earlier then usual evening application, as the Sabbath starts soon and can not apply any creams to my face from sundown tonight till an hour after sundown tomorrow night.

Day 11- Saturday 2/25/17

Please note this entry was not written durimg the day time, but after the end of the Sabbath. This is a make up for one of the applications that missed during the the 10 day trial.

My AM Experiences:
No application this morning due to Sabbath observance.
I did notice that certain areas of the skn on my face seemed to be dry and not sure if it is the serum that is drying out blemishes on my face or not.

My PM Experiences:
I applied the serum to my face at 9:50 pm. Same experience as previously mentioned.

Day 12- Sunday 2/26/17

My AM Experiences:
I noticed again the dry patches in different areas of my face and nor sures I noticed that every morning, but did the oast couple of days. Still not sure noticed any significant changes to my face after completing 10 full days of applying to my face.
I applied the serum to my face at 10:10 am and had same experiences as mentioned previously.

This is the final entry that will be recorded here to make up for one application that missed during the 10 day trial. After using this skin serum, I have to honestly say that I did not see any dramatic changes to my face, especially my chin area, that I was focusing on. It is not to say that the product did not do anything for me, as perhaps it is less noticeable. It also could be that I need to use the product longer. I did apply according to the instructions given. I still have some product left in the bottle and will use it up, but have no plans to purchase it. I am in no way discouraging you from giving this product a try (if you want to do a 10 day trial go to the Facebook page for Herbal Face Food™, and you will find the info there on how to do it) as it is definitely high quality, 100 percent natural and plant-based. So there is no loss for giving it a shot, regardless of whether you see any changes or not.

Thanks for taking the time to read my experiences in using Herbal Face Food™

How to Get Rid of Facial Hair by Tonya Zavasta

I found this article to be very informative on how to get rid of facial hair using only natural food ingredients, that is why I am reposting it on my blog. Like Tonya says, you have to be consistent and do it for a while, on a day-to-day basis to see results.

How to Get Rid of Facial Hair by Tonya Zavasta

What causes this condition?

Many women experience excess facial hair, especially as they age. The root of the problem: the overproduction of male hormones called androgens.

All women’s bodies generate these hormones, and commonly do so without producing excess hair. So long, that is, that hormone production levels stay normal. But several factors can pull androgen production beyond the normal.

Big factors here include heredity and obesity. Fat cells store androgens. Some medical conditions can lead to unwanted facial hair. Corticosteroid medications—prednisone, birth control pills, and hormone replacement treatments among these—can all affect hormone levels, too. Menopause can bring a decrease in the production of estrogen, also leading to darker and more prominent facial hair.

You can manage your facial hair growth with your diet.
Make sure you read the article: Unwanted Facial Hair and Your Diet

Natural Remedies for Removing Facial Hair

Many natural remedies offer beneficial effects for your skin and will help you remove that pesky facial hair! Here are a few common topical home treatments that work well when repeated a couple of times a week…

Lemon juice and honey. Apply a mixture of 1 tbsp. of juice and 4 tbsp. honey. Remove gently after 15 minutes.

Raw papaya and turmeric powder. Create a paste combining 1 to 2 tbsp. raw papaya with ½ tsp. of turmeric powder. Massage onto face. Rinse away after 15 minutes.

Oatmeal and banana. Create a paste with 1 ripe banana and 1 to 2 tsps. of oats and massage into area for 15 minutes. Rinse off with water.

Water and turmeric powder. Create a paste by combining 1 to 2 tsps. of turmeric with water. Wash off after 15 minutes.

Basil and onion. Remove the thin translucent film from between the layers of two onions. Crush 10 to 12 leaves of basil with the film to create a paste. Apply the mixture to affected area. After 15 minutes, rinse off.

Organic gram flour and turmeric powder. Create a paste using 1-2 tsp. of turmeric with ¼ cup of flour and water. Apply to area and leave until dry. Wipe away gently with a warm cloth.

These methods will require consistency and patience. A few applications won’t do it. Nor will spotty use. Consistency over many weeks is what you’ll need for success.

Turmeric for Clear Skin

It’s a cluster of natural processes working together that give these remedies their powerful practical value: exfoliating, cleansing, moisturizing, and anti-oxidant properties. The one ingredient that appears most often in good homeopathic recipes is turmeric. Turmeric has been used for many generations across many cultures, for radiant, healthy skin. In addition to having anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it has also been shown to prevent excess hair growth. It’s nothing less than wonderful for the complexion.

This is why I’ve selected turmeric as one of the ingredients in my new GlaciClear Facial Masque, and combined it with several other nourishing elements, including Canadian Marine Glacial Clay, aloe vera, green tea, and chamomile extracts, for undeniably fresh, clean results.

Applying this masque daily will not only give you a glowing, blemish-free complexion, but it will keep the facial hairs at bay.

Q & A Series: People, Products and The Health of Our Planet – Interview with Joanne Williams, PhD

My Comments

I do not remember where I first found Joanne’s book, but I did download the free sample pages to my iPad and had them there for a while and every so often, I would skim through them. I had an occasion recently, to go through things I saved on my computer to free up some storage space. I paid a bit more attention and read the sample pages and really liked what I saw. On there was her contact info, so I decided to email Joanne and see if I can review her book. Given that it was only an eBook, I would not have a printed copy to read (which I do like to have, for the most part, as I like to be able to have it accessible and can also take notes in it and refer to it without having to always be online). Joanne was gracious enough to gift me the eBook from Amazon (it is also availabe on iTunes) to review and you can read my review on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/review/R3GKVW0R2A1YA5/ref=pe_1098610_137716200_cm_rv_eml_rv0_rv
and also watch the video review on my YouTube channel: eBook Review: Health Begins in the Kitchen by Joanne L. Mumola Williams, PhD -Holistic Nutritionist

For the twenty-ninth interview, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Joanne Williams, PhD – Holistic Nutritionist

Question #1: Tell me briefly about yourself and why you decided to get involved in the “health” industry?

My background is in biomedical and electrical engineering. I worked in high tech for 36 years, 27 years at IBM and 9 years as the CEO of Ampro Computers in Silicon Valley. When my best friend Maggy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, I felt at a loss as to what to do to help her. I am not a fan of conventional medicine but didn’t know enough to suggest alternatives. Despite excellent medical care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC, she passed away two years after her diagnosis. Soon after her death, I began my PhD studies in holistic nutrition and since 2009 I have been writing the blog, http://www.FoodsForLongLife.blogspot.com and also published the eBook, Health Begins in the Kitchen in 2013. I now know that most diseases are not caused by genetics but by diet and lifestyle and I want to help people understand this. So many sit and wait for the inevitable heart attack or diabetes because “it runs in the family” but they don’t have to do that. By eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, they can avoid many dreaded diseases. It’s too late for me to help Maggy, but I have dedicated my life to helping others stay well or address their illnesses.

Question #2: If you were stranded on a desert island and were allowed to take only 5 items with you (they can be food, books or specific products that are all health-related), what would they be and why?

Since I grow most of my own food today, I would bring seeds so that I would plant a beautiful garden on that sunny desert island. Let’s assume the island has electricity – I would bring my Vitamix blender and my Instant Pot Electric Pressure cooker – two of my “must haves” when it comes to healthy cooking. I would also bring my guitar so that I could sit on the beach and sing my favorite folk songs. And, finally, I would bring my laptop so that I could write another book and record my experiences.

Question #3: What one message do you want to share with the people of this world that is crucial for their ultimate well-being and longevity?

You’ll find this message on my website as I wrote this years ago:
“Health, excellent or ill, is passed to our children not just through our genes but primarily through our recipes”.

Questions #4: If someone could afford to purchase only one product at this moment to start their journey towards better health (food or health-related), what would you recommend and why?

It would be a good, high-speed blender, such as a Vitamix or Blendtec. At some point every day, either for breakfast or after a workout, I have a smoothie that is a concoction of berries, other high fiber fruit, veggies, essential oils, nuts or seeds, and green powders. I prefer this over juicing as juicing removes dietary fiber. Fiber is one of the most critical nutrients a person, and their massive microbial population, needs.

Question #5: Tell me more about your business/company and/or products you offer to the public to help them achieve optimal health and well-being?

Presently, I offer my website and it’s more than 500 recipes and articles free for the world to share. I also sell my eBook, Health Begins in the Kitchen, on Amazon and iTunes. I worked on this project, with my nephew Cody, who is a San Francisco photographer, for over 4 years. He took 11,000 shots to capture the 145 photos in the book. It’s a massive book with tons of nutritional information and 160 delicious vegan recipes that are pretty simple to make and quite nutritious. Every recipe contains the nutritional information which I painstakingly calculated for each dish. Although it’s a vegan cook book, it’s for anyone who is trying to eat less meat and more veggies and don’t know how to do it. To make it more affordable, I kept it as an eBook which sells for $9.99. I also wanted to spare the trees. To preview my eBook, go to http://foodsforlonglife.blogspot.com/2013/07/my-new-ebook-health-begins-in-kitchen.html.

My next venture is to develop expertise in the use of CBD-rich cannabis to treat various conditions from pain to Alzheimers. CBD is one of the many non-psychoactive chemical compounds found in cannabis that is most popularly known for treating epilepsy. It is also found in hemp plants but in a much lower concentration. Because of CBD’s many therapeutic values and because CBD-rich plants do not contain much of the psychoactive compound THC, I believe that these plants will soon become legal at the Federal level and will be in everyone’s medicine cabinet as a pain relieving salve, a neuronal supportive tincture, or in many other forms to improve people’s health. My goal is to develop products using the healing powers of this plant and be able to market and sell them legally throughout the country.

Question #6: What are your hopes/aspirations/dreams for the future health of the people and the planet?

I guess I’m just an old hippie but my dream for this planet is for peace and for the people of the world to love each other, not spread hatred. If everyone could work together, we could find solutions to save the planet, end world hunger, and figure out how to prevent and fight diseases naturally.

Question #7: Who is your greatest hero and why?

Mother Nature is my greatest hero. She provides us with all we need.

Question #8: Is there anything else you would like to share with the public?

I would like to tell people that they are more in control of their health and lives than they may think. If you are obese, or suffer from depression, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, even cancer, there is much that you can do about it. Don’t give up hope. Look in the mirror and say, “I’ve got this. I can change my life. I can change my diet. I can start moving instead of sitting. I can choose joy over sadness. It’s all up to me! I’m going to start NOW!”

Question #9: I know that there are variables as to how much food/calories each person consumes when eating raw vegan food (based on many lifestyle factors, etc), but is there a basic guideline you would recommend for everyone?

Much of my book and blog is about raw food. In fact the topic of my PhD dissertation was “The nutritional adequacy of a raw food vegan diet”.

It’s extremely difficult for a raw foodist to obtain all critical nutrients and even calories on a daily basis. Vitamin D, B12, and EPA and DHA essential fatty acids cannot be adequately obtained from plant foods. I discuss this in my book. Raw food vegans, who do not get these specific nutrients from fortified foods, should take supplements. I also feel that grains and legumes are very important foods and are better obtained in their cooked form. Even when I’m doing a raw food cleanse, I include a cup of cooked whole grain or beans each day.
