I created my own business in San Diego called World Peace Kitchen and have been cooking/uncooking and teaching the public for the past 15 years. Now my new venture is called, The Rawsome Vegan Gal, based on my youtube channel name.

I am a whole food/natural foods plant based chef specializing in macrobiotic/vegan and raw vegan cuisine. The food is prepared in what I call “healing gourmet” style that is both nutritious to the body and tantalizes the palate.

I have been vegan for 25 years and completed my studies in macrobiotics at the Kushi Institute in Becket, MA in 1993 and at the Vega Study Center in Oroville, CA in 1994.

I have been written up and interviewed for various publications, including The San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Reader, San Diego Jewish Journal, Beach and Bay Press, Awareness Magazine, Vision Magazine, Bnai Brith Magazine, on the radio program, “Brunch with Jack” and appeared on KUSI News.

I have taught classes at School of Healing Arts, PCOM, Daillard Elementary, Sunrise of La Jolla, University City Senior Center, Clairemont Friendship Center, Whole Foods Hillcrest, Rancho’s Natural Foods, Mueller College, OB People’s Food Co-op, Pacific Beach/Taylor Branch Library, Clairemont Branch Library, Allied Gardens-Benjamin Branch Library, Balboa Branch Library and North Clairemont Branch Library.

I am available for both private and group cooking/raw vegan classes, workshops, presentations, consultations, detoxification programs, hands-on classes, coaching, weekly menu plan, kitchen assessment, private chef services in your home, food/meals for pickup, catering a lunch/small dinner party and teach you how to shop in a health food store. I also travel as a chef outside of my area.

Review of My Little Organic Bistro – Coral Gables, Florida

My Little Organic Bistro Review

I came to My Little Organic Bistro the first time in the summer of 2013 and the food was awesome. It is a small hidden treasure in Coral Gables. All the food is organic. The price is the best ever for the amount of food you are given. The flavor are very well blended and the eye appeal is superb.

There are a lot of “regulars” who come and eat here all the time and some rarely prepare their own food (except on weekends, when the bistro is closed)

If you have never come here to eat, you are missing out and it is worth the trip (I am over a hour away). I came again with my parents for Thanksgiving and had an amazing raw vegan meal. We also took home food for the weekend.

Update: I am sad to say 😥 that in looking up their FB page (could not find the page anymore) that they have closed as of December 2014. I found that information on other sites that review vegan restaurants. What a shame because they made such excellent gourmet raw vegan food. Hope they will re-open.

Q & A Series: People, Products and The Health of Our Planet – Interview with Shannon Schnibbe, Co-Founder and C.E.O. of Sister River Foods

For the nineteenth interview, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Shannon Schnibbe, Co-Founder and C.E.O. of Sister River Foods maker of Parma-Vegan Parmesan in business since 2004

Question #1: Tell me briefly about yourself and why you decided to get involved in the “health” industry?

I have severe allergies and have tried many different ways of eating to give me relief. I was turned onto organic food, a new way of eating (now called ‘raw’), and health food stores in 1990 by a student of Ann Wigmore. In 2000, while living in Chicago and an L Train ride away from Karyn’s Fresh Corner (her pervious raw food restaurant), I went all raw and starting making what is now Parma! I have a B.S. in Business Management, have worked at various businesses. I moved to Oregon and when I got pregnant with my first baby, we decided to start bottling my “cheesey stuff”, and along with our family, Parma! was born.

Question #2: If you were stranded on a desert island and were allowed to take only 5 items with you (they can be food, books or specific products that are all health-related), what would they be and why?

Organic dark chocolate with sea salt, Parma!, chia seeds & coconut water – that about covers it.

Question #3: What one message do you want to share with the people of this world that is crucial for their ultimate well-being and longevity?

Forgive yourself, learn from your mistakes and evolve, forgive others, remember we are all one, practice your (Iyengar) yoga, be here now, and know that, according to Marshall Rosenberg of Non-Violent Communication, that you can heal someone by really hearing what they are saying to you.

Questions #4: If someone could afford to purchase only one product at this moment to start their journey towards better health (food or health-related), what would you recommend and why?

Parma! of course. Parma! gives you that cheesey flavor without all the dairy baggage. It is an excellent food source of high quality vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, omega 3’s, trace minerals, all the goodness of hemp, and it tastes great!

Question #5: Tell me more about your business/company and/or products you offer to the public to help them achieve optimal health and well-being?

Remember that we are the care takers of this planet and all things on it, not the masters. It is our responsibility to ensure a healthy and bright future for our children and our animal and plant friends for seven generations to come.

Question #7: Who is your greatest hero and why?

There are so many. A couple that pop into my head are Ani DiFranco. She is so brave. She has made it on her terms so eloquently, with a beauty that moves. Another is Franklin Roosevelt — I recently watched part of the PBS show on him. He did so many great things standing up to the powers that be, was will to let go of things that didn’t work, and he did it as a “cripple”. Would anyone with a disability like that make it into office right now?

Question #8: Is there anything else you would like to share with the public?

Question #9: I know that there are variables as to how much food/calories each person consumes when eating raw vegan food (based on many lifestyle factors, etc), but is there a basic guideline you would recommend for everyone?

I will just say that too much of anything is not a good thing, vary your diet.

Company Review: Farmhouse Culture – Fine Fermented Foods

Farmhouse Culture Raw, Organic and Fresh refrigerated fermented Krauts and Kimchis in business since 2009

Tagline from their website: “We make the best darn kraut on the planet by infusing regional organic ingredients with wildly imaginative flavor profile.”

At the Natural Product Expo in Anaheim, CA I always find great new products to share with my readers and this company is definitely one of them. There are so many things to see and there is not enough time to see it all. I am glad I found this one. I love sauerkraut/fermented foods because it is yummy and also is great for your “gut” health. Our intestinal flora needs to be continually renewed and cultured food is a way to do it right! I would rather eat food then take a pill. It also helps if you are dealing with any issues of gluten/celiac (which we probably all have, even if we do not get tested) because it has to do with inflammation in the colon and high quality fermented foods help a lot!

When I tasted the krauts from Farmhouse Culture, I wanted more. They are so good and the flavors are so unique. Even more then that, is their packaging. It is not in a jar, as with most companies, they actually use a pouch that does not leach harmful chemicals (no BPA’s, PVC plasticizers or phthalates). It is commonly used in Europe and this company is the first to use it. What makes it special is the patented Ferment-O-Vent which releases the buildup of pressure without harmful bacteria entering and allows the healthful micro-organisms room to grow. Also, the pouch gas a lower carbon footprint and takes less energy to produce and transport then glass.

My Review

Overall impression: Love the colorful packaging/stand-up pouches with the peek-a-boo windows to see what is inside. All the products are great! It depends on your taste buds and how much “heat” you can handle whether you would try/like the spicier krauts and kimchi. I live the unique flavors/ingredients used as it perks up/excites your palate!

Krauts

1- Garlic Dill Pickle

This is my all time favorite! #1 for me! It reminds me of Gus Pickles, a company on the Lower East Side of NY where I used to go as a child with my Dad and siblings to get fresh pickles out of the barrels. This is better because it is organic, too. It is so good, I could eat the whole bag. I also love dill and the flavor is great! This is another really good one if you do not want a spicy kraut.

2- Ginger Beet

This is my 2nd favorite! I love the color of this product. It is also high in Vitamin C. Be careful because it may stain you since it has the red color from the beets. Since it is fermented, it actually smells like cooked beets. It also has ginger, which is warming to the body and has medicinal benefits. This flavor is very good and it not too strong for me to handle like the chili and jalepeño in the other products.

3- Classic Caraway

This is my 3rd favorite! This is really good with only a few ingredients. It is simply delicious. For those of you who do not want a spicy sauerkraut, this is a great option. They carry it in a larger pouch, 22 oz size, as it is probably one of the most popular and perhaps was their first product sold.

4- Horseradish Leek

This is my 4th favorite! High in Vitamin C and A. I am familiar with horseradish, as I eat it on Passover, called “marror” or bitter herbs. I like this flavor and it does not taste bitter to me. It has a slight “bite” and not overly strong where I can not eat it.

5- Smoked Jalapeño

This is my 5th favorite! High in Vitamin C. It has daikon radish which is a very good food for the body. It is known to “cut the fat” when eating fatty/oily animal foods – you would grate it finely and eat with your meal. It is also used medicinally – the greens are dried for a hip bath for feminine issues, the radish is also sun-dried and used in cooking. This flavor was spicy for me – hot! It is tasty and flavorful and has a nice crunch. After a short while I got used to it and wasn’t too hot for me.

Kimchi

Spicy Wakame Ginger

This is my 6th favorite! it is high in Vitamin C. It has wakame seaweed which is used in Japanese culture, mostly in miso soup and helps get rid of heavy metal toxicity in the body and high in minerals. It also has ginger which is warming and medicinal to the body. This one was Very Hot for me! The chili powder is more powerful in the heat index then is jalepeño, in my opinion. It is super intense and still is good. The way I can handle it, is by eating a little hit at a time.

Company Review: Food On Purpose – Organic Raw Vegan Snacks Part 2

Food On Purpose – Organic Raw Vegan Snacks Part 2 in business since 2007 Their motto is: “Intentional Choices, Powerful Foods”

I am reviewing the sweet raw snacks from this company. I am not a “fan” of using agave nectar, as it is equated to HFCS – high fructose corn syrup and is not recommended. I did sample these products, anyway, as GK was kind enough to send them to me for review.

I would say a better option is date syrup or coconut nectar, if a thick liquid syrup is necessary. I actually prefer using the green stevia leaf or powder as it is not sugar and merely a sweet leaf discovered in South America and it is antibacterial, helps regulate blood sugar, etc. To read more about this amazing sweet leaf, read the book, “The Miracle of Stevia,” by James A. May.

I emailed GK about the use of agave sweetener and received this response from him. In an email from GK (National Sales Manager), he says: “We do use agave in our Roonies. They are tasty (especially Choco Roonies) but we are looking at other sweeteners.”

Here is a review of the products: They are all dehydrated, dairy free, gluten free, certified organic and raw.

Granola In The Raw
This is a really nice granola and uses sprouted buckwheat, nuts and seeds. It is tasty and mildly sweet (even though it uses agave, but to me did not seem like a lot of it). The ingredients do not stick today, as in other raw granolas that use dates, but remain separated. I tasted it right out of the bag as a snack and also used it with some coconut water, as a cereal (or you can make a seed or nut milk yourself that is vegan, as I don’t recommend any dairy consumption).

Roonies (as in Macaroons) – 3 varieties
Overall, these are moist and chewy with each one having a different flavor, depending on the ingredients used. One thing I found unnecessary was the use of coconut oil as they are actually soaking in the oil at the bottom of the package (I did not find that “oil pool” in the Choco Roonies) I took them out and used a couple of paper towels to absorb the oil. The would still be delicious without the oil and with another sweetener (as I mentioned above).

Sunny Roonies
These macaroons use mostly coconut and lemon. I like the lemony flavor. It is sweeter then the cereal, as more agave is used and it is the first ingredient listed.

Ginger Roonies
These macaroons have ginger and maca powder. The taste is not strong or overly sweet as the previous one I mentioned. The ginger taste kicks in later and is not overpowering.

Choco Roonies
These macaroons use Peruvian organic cacao, maca powder and vanilla flavor. These has a sweet flavor, but are not overly sweet. I may try and make them myself and use carob instead of cacao or a mix of both of them for a different flavor.

Birds In The Nest
First, I like the name, it is very unique and clever. This is made mostly with cashews and has a raspberry jam scoop in the center of it. I love the color contrast between the macaroon and the fruit. Perhaps other berries can be used such as strawberries, goji berries, blackberries, yellow raspberries, etc (I am salivating, just things about the possibilities, as I am always creating recipes in my head, as I am a chef). This product is flakier, dry and mildly sweet.

Company Review: Food on Purpose – Organic Raw Vegan Snacks Part 1

Food on Purpose – Organic Raw Vegan Snacks Part 1 in business since 2007

I was doing a search on Amazon.com (now they get a free “plug” from me and I do shop there and love the site, but they really don’t need me to help market them, as they are doing very well, on their own:-) for companies that sell raw food products for me to review. I found this company and did my own search and found their website. I liked what I saw there and decided to contact the company, myself. I heard back from the owner and he was gracious enough to send me samples of all their products. Thank you GK for your generosity and for sharing with me the abundance and also the heartfelt connection and energy that permeates from you (as funny/weird as this may sound, there is energetics in the foods we consume and I can most certainly sense the loving intention put into these products when I consumed them). First I am reviewing the savory snacks and later on I will follow up with the sweet ones. I will also be sharing with you the “RVG (Rawsome Vegan Gal) Rating” to let you know which ones I liked the best (I liked them all, they are all yummy and there is simply an order of which is #1, #2 and so on).

The company, Food On Purpose, has a motto, “Intentional Choices, Powerful Foods.” Your choices matter, including the food you eat. On the back of the packaging, they not only have the nutritional information, but also great words of wisdom. Make sure when you buy these products that you read what it says and get inspired! I also like the bright colored packaging and each one is a different color. All the products are USDA certified organic, dairy free, gluten-free, raw, vegan and nutrient dense.

From an email, GK (National Sales Manager) says: We sprout many of our raws before we use them. That is time consuming but healthy. We are a small company but work hard to make the best small batched, raw, vegan, gluten free organic snacks that we possibly can. Enjoy!

Now, I will talk about each product individually. Here I am reviewing the savory raw snacks.

Nutty Nori Chips
This is a great snack and is very light, crunchy and high in minerals. The nut mixture on each cut piece of nori is the right flavor and consistency (made with brazil nuts, maca root, garlic, etc). They are addictive, in a good way and I could eat the whole bag in one sitting. The only constructive criticism I have, it that the nut mixture does not stick well to the nori and maybe need to add some other ingredient that will help it to stay attached.

Organic Raw Flax Seed Crackers – 4 varieties
I like the way the crackers are shaped in a long rectangle and they are all thin (except for one of them) and great for dipping, on hummus or guacamole. Lots of great fresh ingredients are used in the products including garlic, onion, cilantro, parsley, etc (each variety has some or all of these ingredients in them).

Garlic Flaxies
I am not the “biggest fan” of garlic, per se, but I did not get the overpowering garlic taste to these crackers. They are crunchy, tasty and love the sun-dried tomatoes and fresh cilantro,that is in there – you can actually see the long pieces of the stem in there.

Santa Fe Flaxies
These crackers are a little spicy (from the jalapeños) for me and still have a nice flavor and made me cough a little because I do not use spicy chili peppers in my food consumption (I also never grew up with hot and spicy food, so my palate is not adjusted to it).

Savory Sunflower Sprouts Flaxies
These crackers are thicker because they are other seeds in there, including black sesame, pumpkin and sunflower, besides flax, which is the main ingredient. There is also fresh sunflower sprouts, parsley, cilantro and basil. This is a very flavorful cracker.

Green Chili Raw Flaxies
Even though there are green chilies used in these crackers, I did not find these to be too spicy/strong flavor for me. They have a good flavor and use sun-dried tomatoes, fresh onion, garlic and cilantro.

The RVG Rating

Now for my rating of all the products I reviewed.
#1 Overall is the Nutty Nori Chips – in one word – Yummy!
For the 4 varieties of Flax Crackers:
# 1 is Savory Sunflower Seed – mostly for the combination of seeds and not being very spicy
# 2 is Green Chili – the chili did not overpower the flavor and again, not spicy for me
# 3 is Garlic – I am not a huge garlic fan, but this was nice and had a balanced flavor
# 4 is Santa Fe – because of the jalapenos, was a bit spicier for me, but not to the point where I could not eat them

I liked everything I tried overall and some more then others depending on the flavor/seasonings. Everybody’s palate has an affinity for different tastes and I simply give my honest opinions here as to the products I sampled.
