The Fear of Fruit by Frederic Patenaude

“Don’t eat too much fruit!”

“Fruit is fine as long as you stick to apples, grapefruit, berries and other fruits with a lower sugar content.”

This is what we hear from many health authors these days.

What’s up with the fear of fruit? Is it true that we should be careful with the sugar in fruit?

Should We Avoid Hybridized Fruits and Vegetables by Frederic Patenaude

Check out all the great discount offers below on health products from Frederic Patenaude. Please do not delay, as the prices are subject to change at any time.

Should We Avoid Hybridized Fruits and Vegetables by Frederic Patenaude

I recently received the following question from a reader:

“How do I buy fruits and vegetables that are closest to the way our ancestors ate them? I don’t want to be eating these hybridized apples and giant unnatural strawberries, etc. How do I go back to finding original types of fruits before they were altered? How and what should I be shopping for? I trust my instincts, but my instincts tend to push me away from the extremely sweet, weird-tasting new fruits. What should I shop for and where should I be buying? I live in Illinois.”

This is an interesting question, and my answer may surprise you.

First, my follow-up question is: “Why would you want to eat foods close to the foods your ancestors ate?”

It’s probably because you’ve been told that those foods are somehow better, healthier, and more nutritious. They contained less sugar, more fiber, and perhaps more antiox idants.

You probably also have bought the common myth that hybridized foods are bad for health.

But let’s put things into perspective.

Our ancestors ate foods that they could find in their environment, and over the course of thousands upon thousands of generations, they altered these plants by selecting the ones that they preferred.

Our ancestors always preferred foods containing more calories (natural sugar), a manageable amount of fiber, and fewer natural toxins.
The plants we cultivate today are the most nutritious and digestible foods that humans ever had access to.

Trying to go back to wild foods entirely would not only be a mistake, but it would also be counterproductive. While it’s true that some wild plants are nutritious and offer some health benefits, designing a diet around wild plants would be extremely ill advised.

If you tried to live on wild fruits, such as the ones that chimpanzees live on, you would be come sick and eventually die. That’s because humans are not adapted to live on wild plants. We are genetically adapted to foods with more available calories, fewer tannins and fewer natural toxins.

Richard Wrangham, from Harvard University, writes:

“Evolutionary adaptation to cooking might likewise explain why humans seem less prepared to tolerate toxins than do other apes. In my experience of sampling many wild foods eaten by primates, items eaten by chimpanzees in the wild taste better than foods eaten by monkeys. Even so, some of the fruits, seeds, and leaves that chimpanzees select taste so foul that I can barely swallow them. The tastes are strong and rich, excellent indicators of the presence of non-nutritional compounds, many of which are likely to be toxic to humans—but presumably much less so to chimpanzees. Consider the plum-size fruit of Warburgia Ugandensis, a tree famous for its medicinal bark. Warburgia fruits contain a spicy compound reminiscent of a mustard oil. The hot taste renders even a single fruit impossibly unpleasant for humans to ingest. But chimpanzees can eat a pile of these fruits and then look eagerly for more. Many other fruits in the chimpanzee diet are almost equally unpleasant to the human palate. Astringency, the drying sensation produced by tannins and a few other compounds, is common in fruits eaten by chimpanzees.

(…) The shifts in food preference between chimpanzees and humans suggest that our species has a reduced physiological tolerance for foods high in toxins or tannins. Since cooking predictably destroys many toxins, we may have evolved a relatively sensitive palate.”

I’ve spent a lot of time in Costa Rica, and I’ve had the chance to look at what monkeys eat in the wild. The monkeys in Costa Rica are not like great apes, but fruit constitutes most of the diet of some of these monkeys.

What always puzzled me is that whenever I saw the fruits these monkeys ate, and by accident some of it was dropped on the ground, it always looked far from edible to me.

Whenever I tried to eat some of these fruits, I found them to be repulsive. I could not even swallow one bite.

Humans have always had very good reasons to domesticate plants. The wild versions of most domesticated plants are either inedible, low in caloric value, or toxic.

If you attempted to live on wild plants, you would not thrive for very long. Almost every advocate of a “wild diet” still gets most of their calories from domesticated plants (and often animal products).

In the case of strawberries that are the size of small children, it’s true that sometimes the tastes of the public have pushed industry to create even bigger and tastier versions of common fruits. You may prefer the taste of smaller or even wild strawberries, but there’s absolutely nothing indicating that there’s anything wrong, health-wise, with big strawberries, as long as they haven’t been sprayed with a lot of pesticides.

Similarly, there’s absolutely no reason to avoid modern varieties of apples.

The problem with industry is not hybridization. The problem is that the marketplace has forgotten about older varieties of some plants, like apples or tomatoes.

There are literally hundreds of varieties of apples and tomatoes, but only a few are available commercially. However, every single one of those varieties is still domesticated and “hybridized.” They’re just less desirable for commercial reasons, either because the fruits don’t keep as long, or some other rationale like this.

Lately, there’s been a resurgence of interest for Heirloom tomatoes. Those varieties of tomatoes taste a lot better, although sometimes look “weird.” They’re just older varieties of tomatoes but are certainly not anything like the wild versions. They are still domesticated plants.
Seeking to eat what our ancestors ate isn’t practical or beneficial.

First of all, most of the plants they ate no longer exist. Over the course of evolution, they’ve selected the plants that best suited their needs. The initial wild varieties of those plants may still exist somewhere in nature, but you’d be shocked at how inedible those are!

A few exceptions come to mind: wild berries are excellent. But that may be because people, throughout history, have always picked wild berries, and “selected” the best-tasting varieties.

If you want to be healthy and stay healthy, eat foods available at health food stores, farmers markets, and supermarkets. There’s nothing wrong with the organic produce sold in those places. If you have a garden, you could try planting Heirloom varieties of some vegetables, but don’t fool yourself into thinking that those foods have anything to do with what our ancestors ate, tens of thousands of years ago.

Why Raw Foodists Have Bad Teeth by Frederic Patenaude

Check out all the great discount offers below on health products from Frederic Patenaude. Please do not delay, as the prices are subject to change at any time.

Why Raw Foodists Have Bad Teeth by Frederic Patenaude
For years, I’ve been warning raw vegans, Paleo enthusiasts, juicing fans, fruit eaters, smoothie addicts and vegans to take care of their teeth.

What I have observed is:
* I high incidence of dental decay among raw foodists, 1-2 years after they switch to the diet

* A high incidence of gum recession and enamel erosion among raw foodists (this does not mean 100% raw. Anyone who eats a lot of fruit or drinks fresh juices or smoothies should care.)

Dramatic dental problems in people who stick religiously to certain diet principles without questioning them.
In my early days, I’ve had my share of dental problems myself as a direct result of following the raw diet incorrectly. I have also met at least several hundred people who have gone through similar issues.

I’ve been talking about this for a number of years now, and I’m glad that people are finally listening!

This is truly the “weak link” of the raw diet, and it applies to anyone eating a healthy diet!

There are a lot of positive aspects to eating more raw foods.

But… a person can experience many wonderful benefits while changing their diet, and watch with horror as their dental health goes downhill.

And it’s not just raw vegans… vegetarians also must watch out. In fact, anyone who eats healthier!
We know that raw foods contain more acidity. But healthy eaters also consume more cooked vegetables, and acidity can be increased in those vegetables when you roast them.

Peta Bee writes in the Daily Mail:

“Dentists at the University of Dundee found that different cooking methods could increase the acidity of vegetarian dishes, such as roasted vegetables. Exposure to high temperatures produced chemical changes that made the acid more concentrated, and more damaging to teeth. In particular, the acidity level of zucchini, peppers, onions and eggplants increased when roasted.”

So what’s going on here?

The Two Culprits

At this point, if you have the least interest in eating a healthier diet, you should start reading very, very closely.

Dental decay is not caused by eating the wrong diet.

Dental decay is the result of the proliferation of certain types of bacteria in the oral environment. The bacteria eliminate acid waste that eat into your teeth and cause decay.

It’s all about the terrain!

If your oral terrain (the environment) is healthy, you could eat Cheetos and drink Coke all day, and you wouldn’t even get cavities.

When people change their diet, they become a dental health time-bomb. Their bacteria count is a little too high, but not high enough to cause major problems.

Suddenly, they start eating more often, because they eat foods that are not as dense in calories. They drink juices. They drink smoothies. They eat a lot of fruit.

This acid and sugar create a giant feast for the bacteria which feed on them.

The real culprits are the bacteria. But the terrain is determined by:

– Acidity
– Sugar

It’s not all about the food you eat! If you can control the level of acidity in your mouth, you can eat foods that contain acids and sugar, and you’ll be fine.

But, if your oral terrain is not under control, you’ll never be able to eradicate dental problems for life.

You want your bacteria count to be as low as possible.

You want to avoid bacteria forming into colonies and creating their little civilization in your mouth!

If your oral environment is clean… and ALKALINE… it doesn’t matter if you eat dates or raisins all day.

The Only Solution

The only way to prevent dental decay for life and reverse a bad situation is to take active control of your oral environment. Just controlling your diet does not address the root of the problem.

You can create a simple, daily dental hygiene routine that will prevent 95% of problems.

And then, you can do simple things with your diet to control the remaining 5%, like avoiding snacking and being careful with the amount of acid foods you consume.

To find out more, get the eBook “How to Heal and Prevent Dental Disasters.”

http://www.1shoppingcart.com/app/?Clk=4900800

In it, is explained:

– Exactly what routine to follow to heal your teeth, if you’ve experienced any kind of dental problems.

– How to avoid the common dental problems associated with vegetarian, vegans, and raw food diets.

– Nutritional changes you can make that can save your teeth.

It’s the best resource found to avoid and reverse most dental issues.

Winter is Coming – How to Beat the Winter Blues by Frederic Patenaude

Winter is Coming – How to Beat the Winter Blues by Frederic Patenaude

Don’t be caught off-guard this time. Have you started the most obvious cure for the winter blues there is?

Let this email be a warning!

At this time of the year in Northern latitudes, the days are shortening by three minutes a day. But even in Los Angeles the days are shortening by two minutes a day.

When November comes, many people are deep into the “winter blues” without realizing what happened. I’m talking about seasonal affective disorder or SAD.

By December, things get pretty dire rather quickly, with sunset before 5 p.m and days getting even shorter every day.

A slight bout of winter blues means that you’ll feel less energetic, have trouble getting up or staying asleep, and feel not as zesty as usual. Other warning signs include getting up too early and having trouble falling asleep.

If you don’t do anything about it, these symptoms can turn into a full-blown depression.

So let me share with you what to do about it. Because starting the cure early is key!

1) Light Therapy
This simple treatment is your first line of defense. It works! But the key thing is starting early (in September, but now will work if you haven’t started yet), and to do it every day for 30-60 minutes.

I’ve been blasting my eyes with light in the morning since early September, and I will keep this up every single day of the winter, even while traveling. I already feel the benefits compared to years when I didn’t do it.

If you think you tend to have any symptoms of SAD, even slight ones, I highly recommend that you give this a try. But make sure that you:

1) Don’t skimp on quality. Get a good light. After researching this extensively, I decided to purchase the Day-Light Sky Lamp. I’ve been very happy with this lamp, and I also use it on the low setting as a regular source of light.

2) Also get a travel lamp. You don’t want to stop the light therapy when you’re traveling — even if you’re going South. Light therapy only works if you’re doing it every day, and you never know how much sunshine you’re going to get on vacation. Plus, the travel light is very useful for overcoming jet lag by resetting your inner clock to the new time zone. I use it all the time. I recommend this lamp: Brand name- Sphere

The easiest way to use Light Therapy is to do it first thing in the morning while having breakfast, reading your emails, reading the newspaper, having tea or coffee or a smoothie. You have to be fairly close to the light without looking at it.

Start now!

Two Other Ways to Beat the Winter Blues
Here are two more ways to help you beat the winter blues. But you’ll never hear them discussed in the media. These methods work even faster, and the results are more permanent! Note: you must do this in addition to light therapy.

1) Fasting

Fasting (on water) stimulates the production of natural endorphins. At the end of a day of fasting, you naturally feel more alive, energetic, and more importantly: mood significantly improves.

In the winter, I fast one day per week for 20 to 36 hours.

Also, I think our bodies are naturally designed to get fewer calories in the winter, because this has been a time of semi-starvation, in our long evolution as a species.

During the winter, our bodies go through several physiological changes. That is why many people gain weight and feel less energetic. From an evolutionary perspective, it makes sense because it helped us in the past conserve energy.

The problem in our modern world is that “winter never comes.” We experience the cold, but not the starvation. So we pack on the pounds and feel depressed.

One way to overcome this is to fast one day per week. That way, your body will think that “winter is coming” and will react appropriately. Your mood will significantly improve, and you’ll avoid the fat gain that most experience during the winter.

(Note that some people shouldn’t fast, due to health concerns. In this case, you can try a day of eating fruit, smoothies, or juices).

2) A High-Raw Diet

A high-raw diet is a great tool to improve mood and energy levels. Most people think of doing this during the summer, but the winter is a great time to eat more raw!

Again, this refers to the “winter hypothesis.”

A raw diet is naturally less caloric dense but contains more nutrients.

Your body will react by burning fat and producing endorphins — feel-good hormones.

You don’t even have to eat 100% raw to experience the results. Just 50 to 80% raw will do it!

When you combine light therapy, fasting and a raw diet, you have a powerful combo to ward off winter blues or even depression.

Food Combining Simplified by Frederic Patenaude
Whenever I throw celery in a fruit smoothie, or add oranges in a salad, some people ask me “But wait… isn’t that against food combining rules?”

So let’s talk about food combining.

Dr. Herbert Shelton is responsible for most food combining theories. In his book, “Food Combining Made Easy,” he describes his food combining rules based on his experience serving meals to very sick patients at his fasting clinic. Many of his rules have been misinterpreted since. And for the remainder, he rarely gave any explanation, other than his personal experience.

There are no real “rules” of food combining. You must simply pay attention to your digestion.

Instead, here are a few principles that tend to improve digestion in most people:

#1 Don’t Combine Sugar and Fat (in large quantities)

The main combination to avoid is sugar and fat. Sugar being any type of sugar such as fruits, dates, refined sugar, or anything sweet. Fat includes oils, avocados, nuts, and any other type of fatty foods.

The reason is that fat takes a longer time to digest, while sugar tends to digest quickly. When the two are mixed together in sufficient quantities, the sugar will ferment. Say hello to gas and bloating!

So the combinations to avoid include: dates and nuts, nuts and dried fruits, adding fat to fruit smoothies (including oils, nuts, etc.), and obviously eating fruit or sweets at the end of a meal containing fat.

However, the main thing to remember is that QUANTITY is everything.

If you have a few almonds mixed with raisins, you’ll be fine. But if you eat the entire bag, you’re asking for trouble.

Same with fruit in salads: it’s perfectly okay to add some acidic fruits to a salad, like berries or citrus, even if that salad contains avocados. But don’t go pouring half the bottle of olive oil on top of it!

#2: Avoid Sugar and Starch

This is the combination of cooked starch and sugar, so this one obviously doesn’t apply to a raw food meal. Starch includes bread, potatoes, pasta, etc.

This combinations can lead to a lot of gas and fermentation. Examples include: raisin bread, all pastries, all cakes, all cookies, etc.

But again, quantity is everything.

Unnecessary Rules

There are several “rules” of food combining that are really unnecessary. Let me give you a few:

Melons – There’s no reason to avoid eating melons with other fruits. You can mix melons with any other fruit you want, without any problems. Even Shelton said so.

Fruits – Fruits may be combined with each other without problems. There’s no need to only eat fruits of certain categories together.

Tomatoes – Although we eat tomatoes as a vegetable, it is a fruit in reality so it may be combined with other fruits if desired.

Greens Don’t Count – Greens such as lettuce, celery, spinach, and other green leaves, don’t even count in food combining. The reason is that they combine well with anything. They combine well with fruit as well as with any other food.

Simplify Combos

The whole idea about food combining is to simplify meals. It means that a meal with five ingredients will digest more easily than a meal with ten. And a meal with two ingredients will be easier to digest than a meal with five.

It’s more important to vary our diet from meal to meal, rather than get all that variety in one meal!

As you learn more about food combining and a simple and easy raw food diet, you’ll find that it’s really the best way to stay healthy with a “silent” digestion, and best of all, it’s also so enjoyable to eat that way!

More Dangerous Than Processed Foods by Frederic Patenaude

I used to think that eating processed foods was the worst possible thing you could do to your body.

I still think it’s in the top three, but after spending a lot of time over the last few years with some really sharp clinical practitioners, I’ve learned a few things about truly one of the worst things you can do to the body.

How can you prevent burnout as well as help you adrenals rebuild if you’re trashed them with stress, stimulants or nutritional deficiencies.

The Worst Thing You Can Do to Your Body?

One of the worst things that you can do to your body besides the obvious – drugs, eating junk food, excess sugar, etc – is putting it through emotional and environmental stress.

I know, you’ve heard me talk about the dangers of stress before, but let me get into a little more detail.

It’s not the actual stress that wrecks your health, it’s the chemical changes it causes in your body.

This is why it is possibly one of the worst things you can subject your body to.

As you know, stress can come from various sources…

Your thoughts
Your job
Your relationships
Over exercise
Excess sugar
Use of stimulants (coffee, teas, cacao, drugs)
These six things (and more) all can increase the amount of cortisol in the body.

Excess cortisol can interfere with a bunch of different processes causing poor health.

First is immunity.

If you have too much cortisol, you suppress immune function by suppressing the activity of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. This prevents the release of neurotransmitters that help immune function.

So basically, all you’ve heard about stress being related to illness is dead on.

If you’re stressed out, you’re going to get sick.

Second is how your metabolism is regulated and what you crave.

When you have too much stress, you can crave salty or fatty foods, or refined sugar.

Cravings of these foods are very real.

Many times, when you fix the adrenals and eliminate the stress, you can get rid of some of the physiological cravings – the emotional ones require a different set of skills to eliminate!

Third are cardiovascular issues.

Poor adrenal function leads to changes in how your body regulates heart rate and blood pressure.

Inability to regular your cardiovascular system can lead to poor circulation, high or low blood pressure and all diseases related to these issues, particularly hypertension.

Fourth is thinner skin and weaker bones.

Excess cortisol is directly related to thinner skin and weaker bones.

Weaker bones are related to the inability of hormones to regular body processes as well as the excess acidity that is created in the body when excess cortisol is present.

Managing stress and making sure you have plenty of minerals and vitamin D is a much better strategy than drugs for those who have symptoms or signs of osteoporosis.

I hope that helps you understand why you need to take care of your adrenals.

I know from experience what it’s like to have adrenal fatigue and it’s not anything I’d wish on anyone.

The best thing to do is take preventative steps to make sure it doesn’t happen to you, instead of waiting until you’ve damaged your adrenals and then struggle to fix them.
