Can You Eat Raw For $3 a Day? by Frederic Patenaude

Can You Eat Raw For $3 a Day? by Frederic Patenaude

Can you eat raw for $3 a day? In most cases, no! But you can do it for $10 a day. And good news: a well-balanced plant-based diet (not raw) can cost only $3-5 a day!

I worked hard to crunch numbers and figure out how it would be possible to live on a plant-based diet for just $100 a month, or a 100% raw food diet for $10 a day.

I calculated the *exact* cost of all fruits per calories.

I also compared prices all over different cities, and compiled all the best ways to get the best deals on food.

What started as a personal challenge turned into a sort of economic science experiment!

The result is a new book I wrote called “How to Eat Well for Under $100 a Month on a Plant Based Diet” as well as a companion eBook “The Raw Food Diet for $10 a Day.”

The Special is Back

I want to let you know that Frederic’s book, “How to Eat Well for Under $100 a Month on a Plant-Based Diet” with the companion book is available now for $29.95 instead of the usual price of $47.

The reason why I created two separate eBooks is that the methods are different for each approach.

A 100% raw foodist could not live on the same budget as a cooked food vegan because fruits and vegetables are more expensive by calories.

So the approach that must be taken for each diet is different, but can be combined together.

For example, the approach I lay out in my main book tells you how you can eat for just about $3 a day on a plant-based diet. This plant-based diet would include 2-3 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables a day, and of course sources of calories such as potatoes, beans, and some grains.

Someone could well decide to exclude certain items from the menu such as grains and still manage to still within the budget guidelines, and someone else could decide to combine the best of both worlds, such as a high-raw diet with some cooked calories.

In this case the total budget would be in-between $3 and $10 a day.

That’s still significantly less than the outrageous grocery bills most people have!

But you could decide to revert back to my main “plant food” budget of $100 a month by following my methods, if you have a particular goal in mind.

For example, maybe you want to save up for a holiday. Then why not try the plant-based budget for 1-2 months, and then go back to the raw food budget?

It’s totally possible to make it work no matter what your diet is.

The Raw Food Digestive Curse – by Frederic Patenaude

My friend, Frederic, has offered my readers some great deals on his products that will be offered for a limited time. Please don’t delay! Check them out below this article.

The Raw Foodist’s Digestive Curse? by Frederic Patenaude

I’ve had a lot of personal experience in the raw food movement. Much of my adult life I’ve been actively seeking information and learning from others on the topic of nutrition and raw foods.

Over those years, I’ve heard many things said about what is the healthiest way to eat, how your body supposedly reacts to certain foods, and what is the healthiest type of water to drink, among many other things.

One thing that always caught my attention was the digestion people experienced on a raw food diet, and how a raw food diet may impact this.

Raw Foodists and Digestion

Any health-orientated person has taken a greater interest in their digestion, or how your body utilizes and absorbs nutrients from the food you eat, once they started to get in tune with how largely it impacts how you feel.

We all know the feeling of a sour stomach, and when your stomach isn’t happy, it’s hard to think about anything else.

Raw foodists, Natural Hygienists, and many Indian and Eastern health philosophies all put an emphasis on the importance of digestion.

Some stress the importance of eating certain foods together at the same time, or specifically not eating specific foods together at one time.

Food combining has been written about for decades now, and is something I personally used to follow relatively rigidly for many years.

Specifically the Natural Hygiene approach to food combining, like not eating melons with other foods, acid foods with sweet foods, and so on.

The Digestion Industry

Digestion has become so important to the general public now that it’s become a bit of a food-marketing gimmick.

Everything from probiotic-boosted green powders to endless brews of kombucha and lacto-fermented yogurts line the shelves of most grocery stores and supermarkets today, all touting a specific amount and strain of probiotic bacteria.

They’re sold promising improving the balances of bacteria in your intestinal tract, in-turn allowing you better digestion, sharper mental performance, clearer skin, etc. etc.

I think to a large degree, some of the benefits of these specific strains of bacteria and the packaged foods that are “boosted” with them are overall exaggerated to market them.

Naturally fermented foods like raw kombuchas, kimchi, and sauerkraut are much more likely to have truly beneficial bacteria in them vs. powder-boosted items too.

You can make these foods in your own home from your own garden!

It’s also questionable as to how many of the once-living probiotics actually survive from the time of packaging to you eating it, after transit and shelf-time.

I’m not saying that they may not offer some benefit to your digestion, but I feel that truly healthy gut flora starts with an otherwise healthy gut via eating and living healthfully, not a reliance on supplemental bacteria from packaged foods.

Some raw foodist will go as far as buying digestive enzymes in powdered form to supplement the enzymes everyone’s body naturally produces.

This could be a topic for a whole other article, but for now I’ll just say that the body produces all the digestive enzymes you need perfectly fine by itself, given you take care of it.

The Raw Curse

There is something that at one time felt like a phenomenon, but now just makes more logical sense as a natural progression of human adaption.

“The raw curse” is something I’ve written about in my books, “The Raw Food Controversies” and “The Raw Secrets”.

One thing I noticed amongst fellow raw-food-enthusiasts was that there seemed like a predictable decline in digestive abilities the longer they followed a strict raw food diet.

The longer they followed a raw food diet, the less ability they had to digest any other foods than raw foods.

The longer they followed that path, the types of raw foods they ate started being limited, too.

In many circles, you see people eating mostly mono-meals of one type of sweet fruit and tender, leafy greens, for most of their food intake. These are among the easiest foods for the digestive system to digest, as they are mostly composed of simple sugars.

This is a good and a bad thing.

There are valuable nutrients in fruits and tender leafy vegetables that can be easily absorbed by just eating them as they naturally come to you, from the garden or your nearest produce aisle.

But when you eat these foods and absolutely nothing else, you body quits producing the proper digestive enzymes and gastric juices to digest other foods, like dense proteins or starches.

Humans can eat and absorb nutrients from proteins and starch-dense foods just fine, but your body needs to “get used” to digesting them first.

Tuning Up Your Body’s Digestive Fire

I’ve come to the conclusion that many of the so-called digestive imbalances and woes that many people face amongst the vegetarian, vegan and raw food scenes may not always be caused by a complex imbalance of specific digestive bacteria, and more to do with the individual’s inability to digest foods that other people can digest, without any supplements.

The raw foodist who gets knocked out by eating a bowl of rice for the first time in nine months isn’t necessarily a sign that rice is bad for them. It could just be their body wasn’t used to digesting the rice.

You can observe this by the same person eating rice (and many other things!) in the years before and digesting them at least relatively well enough to still function and not be doubled over in pain.

Whether they are incredibly happy to admit it or not, there are many people who previously swore by a 100% raw food diet and now eat cooked foods of many different kinds. The same foods that people swore at one time would wreak havoc on the system are now being eaten and digested perfectly well.

Did their body magically gain the ability to digest the previously “poison!” cooked food from all of that meditation?

While the meditation probably doesn’t hurt anything, it’s mostly just a matter of the body producing the same digestive acids again, in the proper balance, once the new foods are reintroduced into the stomach. The body re-learns how to digest them again.

Like riding a bike!

Keeping Your Stomach Strong

Even basic activities like regular walking and movement/exercise of any kind improves the muscles in your stomach, leading to stronger, more efficient digestion and absorption of the food you eat.

You digestion is much more multi-faceted than some may lead you to believe, so when diagnosing your own circumstances, I encourage you to consider all points of view.

Company Review: Awesome Foods – Raw, Vegan, Gluten Free Snacks and Meals

Awesome Foods – “right carb,” raw, vegan, gluten-free snacks and meals In business since 2005

I found out about this company when I visited Hippocrates Health Institute in Palm Beach, Florida. They have a store (though small, it has everything you need to follow the Hippocrates program) and carry everything from books, snacks, juicers, body care, supplements, etc. I noticed some raw snack from a company called Awesome Foods and took down their contact information. I always do my research first and in this day and age, everyone has a website. I liked what I saw and decided to contact them. I heard back from the owner, Bruce right away and he was kind enough to send me an assortment of their savory snacks that I requested.

Here is some info about this company from their site:

Awesome Foods is a small family owned business started by a husband and wife team in 2005. Bruce and Marsha wanted to create delicious, high quality, raw, “right carb” foods for people in search of raw meals and snacks. At the time, they found that most of the packaged raw foods on the market had high levels of starch and sugar. Since they both have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), they have to avoid foods that are high in sugar and starch. Many of the raw foods available today are made with large amounts of dates, raisins, agave nectar or honey, which are high in sugar or with buckwheat, which is high in starch. All of these ingredients are high on the glycemic index. Their vision is to offer raw foods with complex (right) carbohydrates that are lower on the glycemic index and that taste awesome! They dehydrate their snacks below 118 degrees in order to maintain the enzymes, vitamins and minerals and they use organic ingredients as much as possible. They start with awesome ingredients to produce awesome tasting products, which is why they are called Awesome Foods! Come taste the difference!

I also want to say, that after checking out their website, I was very impressed with their environmental consciousness. I have tried products from many other companies and none of them told me on their site that they compost, use air and water filters, recycle and many other things that you can read about on the site – click on the About link for more information.

I only wish they were located closer to me, so I could try out their meals and other prepared products (soups, dips, dressings, etc) too!(if you do not live near them in Pennsylvania, then it would have to be shipped in an insulated cold package). If the products are not sold in a store in you city or state, then please let the health foods store(s) know that you would like to see their products available for you to purchase. Of course, you can also buy their products directly.

Products I reviewed:

Raw Poppadoms
These are made of sprouted lentils with a combination of various herbs. It has a light and “airy” flavor. It “melts” in my mouth when I taste it! YUM!

Pizza Zucchini Chips
These are round chips that are very crunchy and taste like little pizzas. Very flavorful and delicious!

Pistachio Sticks
I absolutely love these. Have the perfect blend of flavors with the ingredients used. I could eat the whole bag (in a couple of minutes)!

Carrot Chips
These have a light and mild flavor. They are not too sweet, have the right consistency and a nice crunch, too!

Flax Crackers
These crackers are made with soaked golden flax seeds. Red bell pepper, tomato, garlic and onion are added for flavor. I like the way it tastes. They are thicker then other crackers I have tasted and I personally like thinner ones.

Vegetable Tempuraw
This is an absolute winner! The perfect flavor! The Crunch! Fantastic! The following vegetables are used in these snack: daikon, onion, red bell pepper, yam, snow peas and zucchini. This is the raw “take” on tempura, which is deep-fried vegetables. I have had the cooked version many years ago and to me, this tastes so much better. My favorite vegetables in here were the yam and red bell pepper. I wanted to keep eating and eating this till I finished the bag. Addictive, in a healthy way!

My RVG Rating
Here is how I rate these products, in order of what I liked the most. I first have to say that all the snacks I tried were great and some stood out more for me then others. Whatever products you buy will still be much better then what you get at the convenience stores and supermarket. You may think they are a bit “pricey,” and it all depends on what is important in your life! To me, my health is numero uno and I am happy to have options like these to have some snacks and know that I am doing my body good!

#1 – Vegetable Tempuraw – I opened up the package and tasted these vegetable and wanted to eat it all at once. It is so full of flavor and delicious!
#2 – Pistachio Sticks – perfect flavor and wanted to keep eating them. YUM!
#3 – Raw Poppadoms – these are very flavorful and melt in my mouth.
#4 – Pizza Zucchini Chips – loved the pizza flavor. Perfect blend of herbs.
#5 – Carrot Chips – mildly sweet flavor and nice crunch.
#6 – Flax Crackers – good flavor and they are thicker then others I have tasted. I prefer them thinner.

Also check out my youtube channel for the video review: http://www.youtube.com/TheRawsomeVeganGal

I said in the email to Bruce: Hashem/G-d said in the Torah/Old Testament/Bible the proper way to eat and I follow and heed His commandments along with eating food that is whole and plant-based (being a vegan for 23 years)

As quoted from my email and written by Bruce, the owner of the company: Yes, we are from the same tribe. I like the way you are combining the spiritual aspects of life with healthy eating.

Disclaimer: I was not sponsored to write this, but I did receive a sample of the product(s). These are strictly my opinions. I only review products that I, myself would use and purchase.

100% Raw Vegan to “Mostly Raw” Vegan – What has happened? I’m not a FAILURE, am I?!

100% Raw Vegan to “Mostly Raw” Vegan – I have not committed any crime!

Read this post to the end for some special discounts on great products!

There have been an interesting “turn around” in the “movement” of raw foodism (vegan). Some have stayed raw vegan a long time, such as, Dr. Fred Bisci – http://www.anydoubtleaveitout.com (over 40 years), Dr. Doug Graham – http://www.foodnsport.com (over 30 years), Storm Talifero – http://www.thegardendiet.com (over 30 years), Tonya Zavasta – click on either of the two banners on the right side bar to go directly to her website (14 years). Some seems to be heading in that direction, such as, Roger Haeske – http://www.rogerhaeske.com (10 years) and Andrew Perlot – http://www.raw-food-health.net (8 years). There are others known to the public who after being raw vegan for at least a few years or more, have decided to not eat “totally raw vegan,” but “mostly raw vegan.” They are not failures by any mean and are still eating a whole food in a plant based way (as recommended by Drs. John McDougall, Dean Ornish, Caldwell Esselstyn, T. Colin Campbell, Joel Fuhrman and Neal Barnard – I’m sure there are others, too that I have not named!).

I respect the people who have told the truth, more so then being “fakers” and telling others they must eat only raw vegan food or else (and then eat cooked vegan food in secret). At some point they may have been somewhat dogmatic and strict about their own adherence to raw veganism, but I give them the benefit of the doubt, as times change. Sometimes it has to do more so with cost and not that they do not want to stay 100% raw vegan. Others have added in cooked food because, for them individually (remember each person has a different “make-up”) and sometimes they are not absorbing the nutrients they particularly need by eating all raw vegan food.

I for one has experimented with many different ways within my 100% vegan lifestyle for over 20 years. I can tell you with absolute certainty that I will always eat in a whole food plant based way, no matter what. Personally, I prefer to be an all raw vegan and right now it is too costly for where I am living on the East Coast. On the West Coast of USA I was able to obtain an abundance of organic fruit that was much less expensive and did not have a need for cooked food. I am also right now doing a one month experiment with no sugars/fruit of any kind and am eating much more protein in the way of beans and more seeds because I need the calories. I plan to include fruit back into my plan next month and start eating those which are on the lower glycemic scale (like apples, pears, berries, etc even though I love the super sweet fruits like grapes, figs and persimmon). I will ease back into it and when I do eat higher glycemic fruit, I will try to balance it out more with greens (as in a green smoothie) as I find that it is a more balanced way to consume.

Noone consumes the exact same food, as we all have so many different variables where we need to eat more of one type or less of one type to keep the balance. One thing I do adhere to and suggest to everyone for better health, is to eat plant based whole food. If you make that one change, you will see your life evolve in many delightful ways and some that may surprise you, as you thought were never possible after having certain ailments/challenges for so many years (some resign to the fact that “it” meaning the dis-ease/itis, etc, has become part of you already and you have learned to “live with it”).

In lieu of what I have shared with you here, I want to recommend some great products from two people I know who are providing the public with practical information that will benefit you, as well.

My friend, Frederic Patenaude, is offering some great deals on his products exclusively to my readers.
These deals are open-ended right now, but can change at any time, so don’t delay.

I have over 12 years of experience in the raw food movement.
I’ve written several books on the subject, I’ve had one of
the very first raw food websites on the Internet, and I’ve
been in touch with tens of thousands of people following
this diet over the years.

I’ve met most of the raw-food leaders personally, and I’ve
even worked with many of them. I’ve even personally coached
hundreds of people to succeed with a raw food lifestyle.

And after all of these years, I’ve come to the conclusion
that raw-foodists have the worst dental health of any other
“health group” in the world.

Every week, I have raw foodists contact me. They often tell
the same story “I had great results on the raw food diet, until
I started having problems with my teeth.”

What I have observed is:

* I high incidence of dental decay among raw-foodists, after
they switch to the diet
* A high incidence of gum recession and enamel erosion among
raw-foodists
* Sudden, drastic & dramatic dental problems that occur
typically 1 to 3 years after a person has switched to the
raw food diet, and tend to persist overtime.

A study done in Germany found that when subjects switched to
a raw-food diet, they experienced a higher incidence of
enamel erosion.

I have gone through a series of dental problems myself as a
direct result of following the raw-food diet incorrectly
(and I’m not even talking about eating a lot of dates
here), and I have met at least several hundred people who
have gone through similar issues.

I know several leaders of the raw-food movement who have
experience an increasing number of dental problems on the
raw food diet, and still won’t come clean about it and
explain to their followers why this happens.

———————————
The “weak link” of the raw diet
———————————

There’s a lot of positive aspects to the raw food diet. But
the issue of dental health is the real weak link. A person
can experience lots of wonderful beneficial effects on the
raw food diet, but notice their dental health go downhill.

In my experience, it’s also the number one reason why
people quit on the diet after being successful with it for
many years.

It doesn’t happen to every raw-foodist. It probably happens
to the large majority however, and there is a direct
correlation between the switch to the raw diet and the
development of dental problems.

———————————
The Two Culprits
———————————

At this point, if you have the least interest in eating raw
foods, you should start reading very, very closely.

Dental decay is not caused by eating the wrong diet. That’s
right. Dental decay is actually a *transmittable disease*.
Dental decay is the result of the proliferation of certain
types of bacteria in the oral environment. The bacteria
eliminate acid waste that eat into your teeth and cause
decay.

There are only TWO reasons why raw-foodists experience more
problems when they moved to the diet. But before we look at
them, let’s take a look at what is NOT the cause of these
problems. So raw-foodists DON’T have problems with their
teeth because…

– They don’t eat enough greens
– They don’t get the proper ratio of calcium/phosphorus
– They are not consuming “super nutrition”
– They are not consuming enough calories
– They eat too many acid forming foods like nuts and seeds

All of the reasons above are NOT why raw-foodists get
problems with their teeth. The only two reasons why
raw-foodists get problems with their teeth are:

– Underlying issues (the bacteria count)
– Sugar

Once you understand this simple concept, you’ll be able to
eradicate decay for life.

What happens is that when people move into the raw-food
diet, they are basically a time-bomb as far as their dental
health is concerned. Their bacteria count is a little too
high, but not high enough to cause major problems.

Suddenly, they dump a bunch of sugar into their mouths. This
sugar creates a giant feast for the bacteria who feed on
them.

So in that sense, the introduction of a higher quantity of
natural sugar is the determining factor. This sugar can be
in various forms… it doesn’t matter for the bacteria who
feed on them! There is no difference between white sugar and
banana sugar when it comes to increasing the bacteria count
in the mouth!

And this sugar is plentiful in the raw food diet. We’re
talking about:

– Fresh fruits (bananas, mangoes, etc.)
– Fruit juices
– Dried fruits
– Nuts and seeds (which stick to the teeth)
– Raw food “bars” and dehydrated treats
– Dates
– Smoothies (that’s right)
– Green smoothies (that’s right)
– Coconut water

Now… here’s where it gets interesting. Sugar is food for
the bacteria.

Normally, you want your bacteria count to be as low as
possible. You want to avoid bacteria forming in to
*colonies* and creating their own little civilization in
your mouth.

If your oral environment is really clean… it doesn’t
really matter if you eat dates all day. If the bacteria
count is low, you can do that without problems.

So although the *precipitating* factor that creates problem
for raw-foodists is the introduction of more sugar, the
*real* problem are the underlying issues, so the bacteria
count!

The only way to prevent dental decay for life and reverse a
bad situation is to take active control of your oral
environment. Just controlling your diet does not address the
root of the problem.

That’s why I publish the best course available on the
topic, called “How to Heal and Prevent Dental Disasters.”

This program has been created by OraMedia and is the only
course I have discovered that tells you exactly how to avoid
dental problems for the rest of your life.

them, let’s take a look at what is NOT the cause of these

Are you a wannabe Raw Foodist or are struggling to stay raw? Check out Raw Freedom

Raw Freedom by Frederic Patenaude – his best book ever!

My friend, Frederic Patenaude has written his best book ever and there

Here is a sneak peak into the book, as told by Frederic.

To give you an idea of what to expect from this release, here’s the
introduction featured in the book…

What is Raw Freedom?
This book is about creating a healthy, practical diet with a strong
emphasis on raw foods, but not one that is so restrictive that it
requires a 100% commitment to eating only uncooked foods.

It’s a fusion/inclusion program that recognizes that eating a big
percentage of raw foods provides clear benefits, but cooking certain
foods does too.

It’s also a way out for many raw foodists and health enthusiasts who
can’t seem to find a balance, and too often hover between two extremes
with a lot of associated guilt, often induced by years of striving to
eat a diet that is frankly too restrictive.

In this book, you’ll sometimes see me refer to certain people in the
raw food “world” in seemingly pejorative terms, such as the raw food
police, raw food fanatics, and raw food gurus. This is not because I
want to imply that people following a raw food diet are necessarily
all deluded. I have been one of these people (policeman, fanatic and
guru all at the same time!) and I also know that for many individuals,
a 100% raw food diet gives them the health and balance they seek. This
book is not written for those who have found such balance, but to
everyone else, who may be seduced by the raw food message, but are not
able to make it work the way it’s supposed to work according to the
books and gurus.

Yet, at the same time, due to a lack of understanding of certain
physiological principles at play, and a lot of bad science used in the
raw food movement, the trend is for everybody to beat themselves up
for their so-called “failures” at applying a diet that is not
sustainable for a large number of people to begin with. That is why I
will cast light on the dark side of the raw food movement as a whole;
not to imply too much negativity, but simply to make a point that
needs to be made.

The program that I’m proposing in this book is flexible and easily
customizable. If you can get just a few good ideas from this book that
make a difference in your health and your life, I will have achieved
my goal.

This book contains practical advice, not theories. Therefore, I will
not spend too much time trying to debunk every single questionable
statement to be heard in the health food world, or try to prove points
that any honest health-seeker can easily verify by examining the
scientific consensus on the topic.

This book is really more about the experience of one person — yours
truly — both in having experimented with raw food and vegan lifestyles
for more than 15 years, but also in having worked with thousands of
people through a website that receives more than 70,000 unique
visitors a month, and in person at numerous events I’ve attended over
the years. I feel I have a good grasp of the realities faced by the
outside-of-the-box individuals who find themselves attracted to
vegetarianism, veganism and raw foodism — but I also want to repeat
that my experience is subjective. I invite you to view what I say not
with skepticism, but with an open mind. More importantly, I invite you
to trust yourself and your own experience. If what I share with you
strikes a familiar chord, then use the information for your benefit.
If it doesn’t, just move on.

Inclusion vs. Exclusion

What all diet books have in common is that they all tell you what you
should not be eating. Each diet needs a villain that’s universally
responsible for all your ills. Raw foodists blame cooked foods. Paleo
diets blame carbs. The new Wheat Belly fad blames wheat. Vegans blame
animal products in all their forms. Plant-based advocates and natural
hygienists blame oil and fat.

The easier and more identifiable the target is, the more simplistic
the program will be. And simplicity helps sell books. The problem is
that there’s nothing simplistic about the human body and the complex
processes involved in human nutrition. In fact, as far as we know, the
human body (and brain) could be the most complex organism in the
universe.

So to blame all diet-related health problems on one factor would be
missing the mark in a major way, especially when we consider the
obvious:

If cooked foods were truly the cause of most human illnesses, then how
come all the longest lived people eat cooked foods, including almost
all known centenarians? And how come not a single culture on the
planet has ever eaten an exclusively raw food diet?

If grains were truly the cause of the “obesity epidemic” in what is
often dubbed a carb-crazed nation, then how come billions of people
have done just fine for millennia eating a rice-based diet, and stayed
very trim and healthy eating outrageous amounts of carbs?

If carbs were truly the problem, then all come all the longest lived
cultures in the world eat carbs? And how come the human body seems to
be designed to enjoy carbs, with the sweet taste sensation being the
most prominent feature of our sensory system for recognizing food?

If fat were truly the problem, then how come mother’s milk is over 50%
fat by calories. And if sugar was really the problem, again, how come
mother’s milk is over 40% sugar by calories?

Behind every health craze, there’s some truth. The mistake is to
believe in a one-sided answer that, in light of the complexities of
the systems that regulate our health, can frankly be seriously flawed.

So for a change, this book will focus more on inclusion rather than exclusion.

I won’t tell you that the key to this program is to eliminate entire
categories of food from your diet. I’ll try to put things in
perspective, and let you make your own choices based on your own
preferences and knowledge of your own body.

So consider Raw Freedom a “fusion-inclusion” program that combines the
best of raw foods with really healthy cooked foods, to create a
sustainable diet that even gives you some leeway in making your own
decisions.
