Can Raw Foods DESTROY Your Teeth? by Frederic Patenaude
You know all of the health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, but did you know that eating only raw foods could potentially put your teeth at risk?

That’s according to a study that showed that a raw food diet increases risk of dental erosion compared to a conventional diet.

How does raw food affect your teeth, and what can you do to protect them?

What the Study Showed

Researchers from Germany studied 130 subjects whose diet consisted of more than 95 percent raw food. The median duration of the diet was 39 months, with a minimum of 17 months, and a maximum of 418 months.

These participants answered questionnaires recording their food intake during a 7-day period before starting the study.

Researchers then randomly selected 76 gender- and age-matched participants for use as a control group. Using study models, they then registered tooth decay in both groups.

Their findings? Compared to the control group, subjects living on a raw food diet had significantly more tooth decay. 60.5 percent of the raw food eaters had at least one tooth with a severe decay, versus 31.6 percent of the control group.

Why Did This Happen?

Researchers aren’t sure why. They noted that within the raw food group, they could find no significant correlation between nutrition or oral health data. Nevertheless, the results showed that raw food eaters were more at risk.

One thing to note is the high amount of fruit eaten by the raw foodists. The raw food diet records showed that people in the raw food group ate an average of 9.5 kg (21 pounds) of fruit per week. (The maximum amount consumed for one person was 23.7 kg (52 pounds!), which is a lot of fruit!)

It’s no secret that although fruit has many health benefits, it can also be high in sugar and acidity, which is a double whammy for teeth.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has advised that the safest approach when eating apples is to eat them only at mealtimes, (and then rinse out the mouth to minimize tooth damage).

Added to that is the fact that the sugar content of apples (and likely other fruits) has increased by up to 50 percent over the last couple decades, as farmers breed varieties to have a sweeter taste.

New research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that the typical modern apple now has a sugar content of up to 15 percent. This means it contains the equivalent of four teaspoons of sugar.

A BDA spokesperson noted that once enamel is worn away, it doesn’t regenerate.

“Research shows that dental erosion in adults due to diet is usually a result of excessive consumption of fruits and fruit juices.”

Other Potential Causes

The aforementioned research is only one study.

It had a relatively small number of participants.

However, it brings up an important concern. Can a raw food diet be stressful for your teeth?

It’s safe to say that if your diet contains a lot of fruit, your teeth can be at risk. Beyond that, we need more research to discover the answers.

Some raw foodists who have experienced teeth problems after switching to raw have some additional theories.

Eating more often may be part of the issue. Once switching to a raw diet, you may find yourself grazing. Even if you’re snacking on healthy foods, frequent eating can disrupt the natural remineralization of your tooth enamel. Typically after you eat, your saliva goes to work rebuilding enamel.

However, if your saliva is constantly breaking down more food, and if that food is more sugary and acidic, your tooth enamel is more likely to suffer.

Another possibility is that due to the increased intake of nuts, dried fruit, and dehydrated foods food more easily becomes lodged between teeth where it is hard to remove. The longer food debris stays stuck on or between teeth, the easier for bacteria to attack.

How to Protect Your Teeth While Enjoying a Raw Food Diet (and Fruits!)

The answer, fortunately, is not to stop eating fruits or nuts or other great raw foods. The answer is to consider changing how you take care of your teeth in between meals and snacks.

One thing to be careful of—brushing right after eating an acidic food is actually worse for your teeth than doing nothing at all. Acid breaks down enamel, leaving your teeth vulnerable. Enamel softened by an acid attack can be scrubbed away by the toothbrush.

Why Raw Foodists Have Bad Teeth by Frederic Patenaude

Why Raw Foodists Have Bad Teeth by Frederic Patenaude
For years, I’ve been warning raw vegans, Paleo enthusiasts, juicing fans, fruit eaters, smoothie addicts and vegans to take care of their teeth.

What I have observed is:
* I high incidence of dental decay among raw foodists, 1-2 years after they switch to the diet

* A high incidence of gum recession and enamel erosion among raw foodists (this does not mean 100% raw. Anyone who eats a lot of fruit or drinks fresh juices or smoothies should care.)

Dramatic dental problems in people who stick religiously to certain diet principles without questioning them.
In my early days, I’ve had my share of dental problems myself as a direct result of following the raw diet incorrectly. I have also met at least several hundred people who have gone through similar issues.

I’ve been talking about this for a number of years now, and I’m glad that people are finally listening!

This is truly the “weak link” of the raw diet, and it applies to anyone eating a healthy diet!

There are a lot of positive aspects to eating more raw foods.

But… a person can experience many wonderful benefits while changing their diet, and watch with horror as their dental health goes downhill.

And it’s not just raw vegans… vegetarians also must watch out. In fact, anyone who eats healthier!
We know that raw foods contain more acidity. But healthy eaters also consume more cooked vegetables, and acidity can be increased in those vegetables when you roast them.

Peta Bee writes in the Daily Mail:

“Dentists at the University of Dundee found that different cooking methods could increase the acidity of vegetarian dishes, such as roasted vegetables. Exposure to high temperatures produced chemical changes that made the acid more concentrated, and more damaging to teeth. In particular, the acidity level of zucchini, peppers, onions and eggplants increased when roasted.”

So what’s going on here?

The Two Culprits

At this point, if you have the least interest in eating a healthier diet, you should start reading very, very closely.

Dental decay is not caused by eating the wrong diet.

Dental decay is the result of the proliferation of certain types of bacteria in the oral environment. The bacteria eliminate acid waste that eat into your teeth and cause decay.

It’s all about the terrain!

If your oral terrain (the environment) is healthy, you could eat Cheetos and drink Coke all day, and you wouldn’t even get cavities.

When people change their diet, they become a dental health time-bomb. Their bacteria count is a little too high, but not high enough to cause major problems.

Suddenly, they start eating more often, because they eat foods that are not as dense in calories. They drink juices. They drink smoothies. They eat a lot of fruit.

This acid and sugar create a giant feast for the bacteria which feed on them.

The real culprits are the bacteria. But the terrain is determined by:

– Acidity
– Sugar

It’s not all about the food you eat! If you can control the level of acidity in your mouth, you can eat foods that contain acids and sugar, and you’ll be fine.

But, if your oral terrain is not under control, you’ll never be able to eradicate dental problems for life.

You want your bacteria count to be as low as possible.

You want to avoid bacteria forming into colonies and creating their little civilization in your mouth!

If your oral environment is clean… and ALKALINE… it doesn’t matter if you eat dates or raisins all day.

The Only Solution

The only way to prevent dental decay for life and reverse a bad situation is to take active control of your oral environment. Just controlling your diet does not address the root of the problem.

You can create a simple, daily dental hygiene routine that will prevent 95% of problems.

And then, you can do simple things with your diet to control the remaining 5%, like avoiding snacking and being careful with the amount of acid foods you consume.

To find out more, get the eBook “How to Heal and Prevent Dental Disasters.”

How to Do a One-Day Water Fast by Frederic Patenaude

Check out all the great discount offers below on health products from Frederic Patenaude. Please do not delay, as the prices are subject to change at any time.

How to Do a One-Day Water Fast by Frederic Patenaude

When I fast, I don’t drink any juice. I find fasting easier that way, and I believe that juice fasting maintains hunger without leading to as many benefits.

I also never fast on a “schedule.” Even though last year I fasted every week for 36 hours for several months in a row, I stopped after doing enough of it. Always listen to your body when fasting. (But the trick is knowing how to listen!)

I also don’t practice such as eating only 500 calories for one day, such as in the 5:2 Diet. It’s easier to fast drinking only water. That way there is nothing to organize, nothing to think about, and you stop the fast whenever you are ready.

The Benefits of a 24 to 36 Hour Fast

A short fast is not true fasting because the body never fully enters into ketone metabolism, where it burns body fat exclusively for energy. So it’s more a “digestive rest.” But it offers quite a few benefits:

Reduced blood lipids (decreased triglycerides and LDL cholesterol)
Lower body fat
Reduced blood pressure
Reduced chronic inflammation (CRP, IL-6, TNF, BDNF, and more)
Reduced oxidative stress
Reduced cancer risk
Increased fat burning
Improved appetite control
Increased insulin sensitivity and decreased insulin levels
Improved cardiovascular function
Improved memory and cognitive function
My main reason for fasting fast is because it makes me feel good!

It’s the best way I found to reset real hunger and appetite, uplift mood and get some rest.

And even though fasting is never without some efforts, I have enough experience with it to slip into a 36 hour fast comfortably. Let me give you some tips.

The Easiest Way to Approach a Fast

First, you have to understand that you’ve conditioned your body to eat at certain times. If you feel hungry in the morning, that is not real hunger but rather conditioning. Your body is used to request food whether it’s truly hungry or not.

When you fast for 24 to 26 hours, your body uses its immediate reserves: food still being digested, glycogen in the muscles and liver. It might partly shift to ketone bodies as an energy source but not 100%.

So the first approach to fasting for a day is understanding that you’re not fasting. You’re only delaying your first meal of the day!

How Are You Feeling Now?

The most important piece of advice I can give you about fasting is that you should mentally “chunk it” into blocks of time of one or a few hours.

When you start your fast, you might be thinking to yourself, “Wow, this is difficult. I don’t think I’ll be able to make it.”

What you have to realize, and this comes with practice, is that whatever you’re feeling right now is temporary. The feelings will pass.

My goal when I fast for 24 to 36 hours is to reach the “euphoria” part of the fast when fasting becomes easy. This feeling usually occurs after 4 p.m. After that, fasting is a breeze. In fact, fasting is easy for MOST of the time when doing such a long fast. But it can be difficult some of the time. Here’s how to go about it.

Going to Bed

You can choose to eat a very light dinner or not, eat it early or eat it late. I say do whatever you normally do. Going to bed is the first part of the fast. It’s easy because we fast every night when we sleep!

Fasting Until Noon

The next chunk of the fast is fasting until noon — thereby skipping breakfast. Many people do this all the time, so it’s not that hard. If you regularly drink coffee, I say drink some then or drink some green tea. It’s not worth it going through a fast AND have to detox caffeine at the same time. But switching to green tea is a good idea.

Getting Over the Afternoon Crash

The most difficult part of a 1-day fast is the afternoon. You’ll feel good until right around 1 p.m. or when you start to feel genuine hunger. That’s when you’re starting to think that you won’t last until the end of the day.

If you continue, you might start to feel tired in the afternoon, which coincides with circadian rhythms.

I like to consider this fatigue as “rest.” That’s why I prefer to fast on a Sunday. I will nap at that time and get the most wonderful rest.

Whenever I feel like breaking the fast during that period, I tell myself, “Try another hour and decide then.” I know that whatever I’m feeling at the moment will pass.

The Evening High

This is when the fast becomes fun and exciting. The endorphins kick in, and you feel great. Your mood is positive, and it’s then no problem to continue the fast or break it.

You can decide to break the fast for a 24 hour fast.

Or you can choose to go to bed “hungry.” Listen to your body. I usually find that I feel good enough to go to sleep on an empty stomach and fast until the next day. But sometimes I want to eat and break the fast, so I do it.

Sleeping On An Empty Stomach

It’s not that difficult to fast through the night if you put your mind to it. For many people sleep is a bit lighter and for some deeper. I experience deeper sleep on the first days of the fast, so I do enjoy this night! Your energy should be good the next day because fasters don’t require as much sleep.

People who sleep well tend to sleep less during a fast and those who have sleep problems tend to sleep better.

If you wake up in the middle of the night and are genuinely hungry, then break the fast then with some fruit and go back to bed. Otherwise, you can fast until the morning.

The Morning

It’s surprising that most mornings, after fasting for over 32-36 hours, I am rarely hungry. I often have to decide to break the fast because I often feel like I could go on. Sometimes I do go on and wait for hunger to come back, which can take many hours and take me to a 40 or even 48 hour fast.

But if you have important work to do that day, break the fast no matter how hungry you are.

Breaking the Fast

Breaking a short fast is not something that requires a lot of planning. A longer fast weakens your digestion, so re-feeding becomes the most critical aspect of the fast.

I suggest that you eat whole fruit. It will taste amazing! And your energy will quickly come back.

Then act as if the fast never happened. Continue with your day but listen to your body. You may be hungrier than usual or not. Just follow your hunger and don’t question it. Try to eat as healthy as you can, and hopefully healthier than you did before the fast.

After a fast, you might recalibrate your taste buds enough to make a few changes, such as drinking less caffeine, switching to tea, quitting tea, eating more raw food, eating less salt, going vegan, going raw, etc. You’ll be more in tune with what your body needs!

A few people cannot fast for even just 24 hours. People with diabetes fall into that category. Your doctor can advise you.

Stop Cavities Dead in Their Tracks! by Frederic Patenaude
I’ve heard different versions of the same story over and over again.

A sort of dental “disaster” story.

It happens to people who change their diet for raw foods, vegan, Paleo, etc. But it also happens to different people at various points in their lives.

It goes like this:

“I never had any problems with my teeth except a few cavities when I was a kid. Suddenly I got a bunch of cavities at once! And over the next few years: gum recession, sensitivity to cold/hot foods, enamel erosion, you name it!”

Or someone has “perfect” teeth for a while, but after months of gnawing teeth pain that gets worse, they see a dentist, only to discover that they have seven cavities, receded gums, chipping enamel, and all sorts of discoloration on their teeth.

Different details for different people, but it’s the same story over and over.

Sometimes the diet is to blame; sometimes it’s not.

It’s not that raw foods are “bad for your teeth”.

It’s just that raw foods are alive and filled with acids and natural sugar, which cariogenic bacteria love. It’s their fuel.

Cariogenic = cavity-causing. Not what we want thriving in our mouth.

To avoid and reverse those problems, it all just comes down to restoring the alkaline balance and leaving your body’s natural abilities to regulate and work their magic.

If your mouth PH is alkaline and there aren’t much cavity-causing bacteria to cause problems, you can be eating sugar all day and your pearly whites will be just fine.

Can you reverse cavities without needing filling?

In many cases, the answer is yes!

It happened to me, as it happened to many others.

In fact, a recent study was published in an Australian dentistry journal in December 2015. They showed that 50% of dental fillings were unnecessary because many dental decay cases do not require them.

They wrote:
“A tooth should be only be drilled and filled where an actual hole-in-the-tooth (cavity) is already evident.”

When you learn how to create a healthy state in your mouth, miracles can happen.

Cavities can be stopped dead in their tracks. You’ll avoid some of the worst consequences of dental problems. Your body can heal itself — so can your teeth!

Of course, dental repairs are sometimes necessary. But why not deal with the ROOT of the problem and put your mouth in an alkaline state, with the right mineral balance — where your teeth can start getting stronger, your gums healthier, and only then do the repairs that are needed?

Don’t give up your health independence and rely on dentists to take care of your teeth! Do it yourself and you’ll have healthy, clean, beautiful teeth for a lifetime.

We’re excited about the second edition of the program “How to Heal and Prevent Dental Disasters.”

Mūna: Peruvian Medicinal Herb with Numerous Health Benefits by Frederic Patenude

I Love This Herb by Frederic Patenaude

I used to think that all medicinal herbs were just natural versions of pharmaceutical drugs. By that, I thought they were not as harmful, but just masked the symptoms instead of addressing the “cause.”

This attitude came from my Natural Hygiene background.

Natural Hygiene is a beautiful health philosophy that I first came across when I was 18, and what led me to the raw food and natural health lifestyle.

The idea is that the same factors that lead to good health are the ones needed to recover lost health. Everything else just “gets in the way.”

For example, water fasting as a therapy comes from Natural Hygiene, and it’s the ultimate way to apply this philosophy. And it works. You do nothing, intelligently, and let your body work its magic.

Stop the cause — the root of the problem — and provide your body what it needs to heal itself, such as a super-healthy diet, sunshine, rest, water, and exercise in the right amount.

If you follow this health philosophy, you will get great results. It cuts through the BS that currently clutters the natural health world.

However, it has its limits.

For example, what if you have a nasty infection? We know that antibiotics have saved millions of lives in those circumstances. Myself, I wouldn’t always trust that my body will “heal itself.” It works a lot of the time, but we also have our limits.

Now back to medicinal herbs…

Although Natural Hygiene rejects them entirely, I believe they can have a place in your health arsenal. Don’t use them as your primary way of taking care of yourself. But having a few medicinal herbs around can be quite useful.

I still think that “doing nothing, intelligently” is excellent advice, most of the time. Let’s add to that a few medicinal herbs and yes, even some pharmaceutical drugs, when absolutely necessary (such as antibiotics).

I Love This Herb

Along with Holy Basil, muña is my favorite mild, medicinal herb. It’s not very strong and is used as a tea. The herb is also called the Andean Mint, but I think you’ll notice by trying it that it is not your average mint!

It can help to:

– Heal intestinal problems
– Cure bad breath
– Reduce inflammation
– Overcome excess stomach acidity
– Calm indigestion
– Prevent the inflammation of wounds
– Fight parasites
– Stop diarrhea

Kevin and Annmarie brought back this herb from one of their many trips to Peru. After going through many legal hoops, they’ve found a way to import it all the way to the US. We now ship it all over the world.

What’s great about the muña that Renegade Health imports is that it’s super-fresh. We harvest it from a village in a sustainable way, working with local families on this project. It’s an outstanding product.

I make it the same way I make mint tea:

I let it steep for 5 minutes, and the leaves will fall at the bottom of the cup or the teapot, sweetened with some coconut nectar or date syrup.

The Importance of Caloric Density by Frederic Patenaude

Check out the great deals below on healthy living products from Frederic.

The Importance of Caloric Density by Frederic Patenaude

Caloric density is one of the most important concepts in health and weight loss.

It’s simply a value of how many calories are in a certain weight of food, either by pound or kilo.

If you eat foods with a low caloric density, you get full much faster because you have more volume to deal with, and more fiber to keep you full.

If you eat foods of high-caloric density, you tend to find it easier to consume more calories, and for some people this causes some issues for their waistline.

Study after study has shown that caloric density is the most important factor in making a diet work long-term.

Why?

Because if you eat foods of low caloric density, you get full much faster, and it’s incredibly difficult to overeat and gain unwanted weight.

For example, lettuce has a caloric density of only 100 calories per pound, while olive oil has 4000 calories per pound.

Now you’ll say… yeah, but nobody just eats olive oil!

Of course. But whenever you add olive oil to a food, you increase the overall caloric density significantly.

One famous study showed that when they fed a group of people the same food but without the added fat, people ate the same amount of food, but consumed fewer calories, and lost weight. But, the other group being fed the same food but with extra oil sneaked in gained weight. They were taking in extra calories without realizing it!

At the same time, if you add lettuce to any meal, you lower the caloric density.

That’s why they’ve found that when people had a large fat free salad or a big apple before their meal, they ate less at the meal and were able to lose weight.

All because of applying the concepts of caloric density.

It’s important to note that nobody can live on just vegetables, and that you’d get so hungry on a diet of just vegetables that you’d eventually break down and eat something else!

However, you do want your diet to contain plenty of raw vegetables, by weight.

The concept of caloric density applied to your overall system of eating is to look at the overall caloric density of your meals.

5 Life-Changing Lectures (Advanced Study Weekend Review) by Frederic Patenaude

This was such great “eye opening” information I received in an email from Frederic that I am reposting it here to share with all of you.

Also, there are some great deals on Frederic’s health products, not to be missed and prices may change at any time, so check them out below.
———————–
I attended the “Advanced Study Weekend” organized by Dr. John McDougall. He organizes this event twice a year and I have attended many times in the past. In my opinion, this is the best event organized anywhere in the world about health. The information is cutting-edge, free of hype and non-commercial in nature.

Here are my notes from this year’s event. I’m not going to review every single lecture, but instead focus on the ones that stood out for me.

Dr. McDougall on the New Dietary Guidelines

Dr. McDougall spent some time reviewing the latest USD guidelines for nutrition. He said that there were some wins but overall they obscure their recommendation using complicated language.
The guidelines are “guided” by industry. However, they are still a step forward if you read them carefully.

Even though they now removed the limit on cholesterol, they also write that one should make efforts to limit cholesterol. Go figure…

The reason many studies show that eating cholesterol has no effect on blood cholesterol is because of the design of the studies. When someone already eats a diet with over 400 mg of cholesterol, absorption is blocked for more. That’s why eggs show no effect on cholesterol in a diet that is already rich in animal products.

However, eggs will raise cholesterol levels in vegetarians.

T. Colin Campbell, PhD

Colin Campbell is the co-author of the China Study but also a relentless researcher. He was sitting just in front of me during the weekend, and I was amazed at his vitality at age 82. His conference was one of the most enlightening ones from the weekend.

The Supremacy of Protein – 200 Years – Has Anything Changed?
Dr. Campbell went through the history of protein from its discovery in the 1840s. Here are some highlights:

Studies were done in the 1870s established protein requirements to 52 grams a day but 120g/day was recommended instead.

As early as 1908 the overconsumption of protein was associated with cancer
Chittenden in 1905 discovered that physical endurance and strength increased on a low-protein, plant-based diet.

It’s the animal protein in the diet that causes heart disease, not just the saturated fat or cholesterol itself.

In the China Study, there was a 200X variation in rates of different cancers between the counties. It related to blood cholesterol levels. In China, the range was as low as 90 up to 170.
They thought that cholesterol was low enough in China, so why the increase in cancer at higher levels?

Because blood cholesterol levels was a result of animal protein consumption. It wasn’t the cholesterol itself, but the protein. Because animal protein raised cholesterol level, they could make the connection.

In animal studies, more animal protein promotes cancer growth. But you can consume as much plant protein as you want, doesn’t matter, because it’s different protein. It’s a whole food — it’s the full package.

Epidemiological studies done on different low-fat vs. high fat diets today are a mirage. They consider things like fiber, fat, etc. But NO large-scale study has ever been done on the type of diet we recommend, like the Ornish diet. A whole foods plant-based diet works not for one disease but every disease.

All the studies done compare 30% fat to 60% fat. Even from 20% to 60% there’s not much difference. It’s like comparing smokers with two packs or three packs a day. There are no studies done on the food that we recommend: whole foods, 100% plant-based, no oil.

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn: Treating the Cause to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease

Another superstar speaker. He’s also 82 years old. He gave his usual lecture on becoming “heart attack-proof” with a few new twists. Here are a few highlights:

How do we get heart disease? It starts with inflammation of the endothelial cells lining the walls of our arteries. Cholesterol gets stuck there and goes under the lining. It gets oxidized, and the body tries to get rid of it. Progressively, plaque forms, and its content oozes out. This activates a clotting factor… we get a clot, and BOOM, a heart attack.

You can get heart-attack-proof for life in just three weeks. You have to change your chemistry and make sure nothing in your blood gets sticky.

Nitric oxide, discovered in 1980-1998 (and for which a Nobel Prize was awarded), is key. It’s a strong vessel dilator and prevents arteries from becoming thick.

A single meal at McDonalds can injure your endothelial cells and prevent artery dilation for several hours.

Caffeine in coffee injures the endothelial cells (but not in tea), as do olive, soybean and palm oils.

To improve nitric oxide function, cardiac patients should eat greens SIX TIMES a day! About fist-sized (once cooked), with balsamic vinegar, cooked for 4-5 minutes. For optimal results, no smoothies. Eat and chew your greens.

Never before in Medicine have we had something as powerful as a toolbox as we have with plant-based diet

Why Lunch Matters: Promotion and Prescribing – Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD

This lecture was not about lunch! It was about the marketing techniques used by pharmaceutical companies to promote their products. It was super enlightening! It focused on the pharmaceutical reps marketing to doctors directly.

(The “lunch” part of it comes from the fact that often these reps pay lunch or other small gifts to doctors. Doctors don’t feel it’s a gift, but they feel obligated to reciprocate. They discovered that small gifts work better than big ones!).

It will be tough to summarize the lecture, but I’ll give you a few highlights:

Pharmaceutical reps make 150-300K a year and provide a 13X return on investments to the company. They only work on three doctors!

Physicians are smart and naive, and more more susceptible to financial scams and manipulation from marketing techniques. Doctors believe that they haven’t been bought off, even when they have.

One fourth of doctors in the US doesn’t see reps from pharmaceutical company. Find a doctor who doesn’t.

Marketing of drugs starts seven years before they are on the marketing. It’s illegal to promote a drug before it’s approved but instead, they market a disease with a “disease awareness campaign.”
Many diseases have changed names or benign conditions have been redefined by pharmaceutical companies in preparation for a new drug, or a rebranding of an old drug.

Examples:

Pfizer renamed “impotence” “erectile dysfunction” to remove the stigma associated with the condition and prepare for the release of their drug.

Heartburn used to be a simple condition, and the advice was “don’t eat so much, don’t drink and take TUMS.” It’s been rebranded as “GERD” with drugs you need to take every day for the rest of your life.
Drugs are often renamed. When the Prozac patent came close to expiration, the same drug was rebranded as Sarafem.

Menopause has been turned from a normal life event to a medical condition. We promote hormone therapy even when menopause is not a disease.

For men, “Low testosterone” is the latest of those “new conditions.”

Dr. Milton Mills: Are Humans Designed to Eat Meat?

This was a fascinating lectures. When we hear that humans are “natural carnivores,” or even “omnivores,” we wonder what part of it is true.

Dr. Mills went through a detailed analysis of exactly what the differences are between true carnivores and plant eaters and proved that humans can’t be even part-time carnivores.

Here are a few highlights:

Carnivores are animals optimized for predation. They expend little effort to catch their food. They seek weak, diseased and defective animals because they are easier to catch.

Herbivores seek lush, verdant and beautiful food. Humans are trying to be carnivores with a herbivore mentality (we seek healthy meat). This beauty paradigm creates species destruction.

Hunting doesn’t add up regarding energy deficit for humans. We expend more energy hunting for meat than we get in calories. True carnivores only need to eat every 7-10 days and can eat up to 20-30% of their body weight in one meal.

Humans are designed for foraging and walking very long distances at a low energy cost. We’re the only animal efficiently designed for walking.

We’re not designed to run fast. We can run fast enough to escape insects and bees. We’re not fast enough to outrun any animal.

Hunter-Gatherers who outrun their prey expend more energy hunting than they get from the meat. they obtain most of their calories from plant foods. We can’t even eat enough in one meal to replace the energy expanded from just ONE hunt. Carnivores get enough to eat for a week.

Richard Oppenlander: Food Choices and Sustainability

Normally the lectures focus on human health, but this time Dr. McDougall had two lectures on environmental issues as they relate to food. Richard Oppenlander’s lecture was very enlightening about this very important topic that’s so misunderstood and abused.

We are 7.4 billion people on the planet but over 70 billion farm animals. This is unsustainable. Global warming is just one component of global depletion.

We can’t eliminate fossil fuels now, but we can change the food we eat. All animal food production systems are unsustainable.

It’s close to 51% of all greenhouse gas emissions that come from animal agriculture.

Climate change could be irreversible by 2017.

We need to change the words we use. Words like CSA, farm to table, traceable, local, organic, grass-fed, cage-free, Paleo, “humane”, real food, sustainable seafood… are all terribly misleading.

The “real food” movement is flawed. A vegan bar is considered processed and not “real” food, but fish and meat is considered “real food.

The movement to eat “less meat” is also flawed. It shifts the focus to seafood, which causes huge problems.

Every country in the world lacking fresh water is struggling but giving water to livestock.

In California, 60-70% of all the water goes to livestock. We’re told to watch our water consumption in the shower which might save 2-3 gallons of water, when not eating meat saves 2000 gallons of water a day.

If you love fish don’t eat it. The most important cause of coral death is overfishing.

The problem is not overfishing. The problem is fishing. We catch fish to feed farm fish, so even farmed salmon is not sustainable.

None of the environmental organizations say anything about eating meat, yet they keep throwing the word “sustainable” without defining what it means.

Michael Greger, M.D.

Dr. Michael Greger gave one of the best lectures of the weekend, but I’m not going to summarize it because you can download many of the lectures on his website for free.

Anatomy of a Craving by Frederic Patenaude

Check out the special offers below on products from Frederic, as the prices are subject to change without notice!

Anatomy of a Craving by Frederic Patenaude

Have you noticed that almost all cravings for unhealthy foods come in the evening or at night?

I’ve heard that cravings are caused by low-blood sugar, food addiction, emotional eating, yin/yang imbalance, hormonal problems, dehydration, and nutritional deficiencies.

In my experience, none of these reasons are the cause of food cravings in most people.

80% of the time, food cravings are caused by:

1) Under-eating complex carbohydrates or fruit
2) Poor planning: you just don’t have enough tasty, healthy meals available at the right time

Let’s take a closer look.

The first reason is often overlooked. You’re not eating enough of the foods your body needs to be satisfied and maintain its energy levels.

Many popular diets tell you to fill up on vegetables — which contain virtually no calories. Plenty of vitamins and minerals, but none of the main thing that your body actually needs the most: glucose.

Other diets tell you to fill up on fat, such as found in nuts and seeds, olive oil, and avocado. But fat is the least satiating type of macronutrient — and every experiment done has proved this. You can sneak in extra calories in the form of oil in the food and people eat the same quantity (but more calories) without feeling more satisfied.

Protein can be satiating because it tends to curb feelings of hunger. But eating high-protein food doesn’t give you what your body actually craves: glucose. So that’s why people still crave sugar after a high-protein, “low-carb” meal, and eventually fall off the wagon to binge on rolls and other refined carbs like desserts!

When you give your body plenty of healthy, whole food sources of glucose — as in whole fruit, and healthy starches (rice, potatoes, beans, etc.) — cravings miraculously go away.

My mom lost 60+ pounds eating as many of those foods as she cared for, without every counting calories. And thousands of people have done the same.

I hope that I’m not bragging by saying that I never get food cravings for things like chocolate, ice-cream, desserts, decadent food, chips, etc. Why? Because I’m not restricting at all the one category of nutrient that my body needs the most!

Poor Planning

People often tell me: “if I had a personal chef making me tasty, high raw, low-fat vegan recipes at home — then maybe I could do this diet. But I just don’t have the time!”

My fridge is always stocked with a ton of super-healthy meals that I prepare in advance, in a flash. I’m prepared, therefore I don’t have cravings!

If you get bored with your food, you’ll crave something else. If you open the fridge and tasty, healthy food greets you, you’re not going to be looking for something else. It’s that simple!

Another problem is that most raw food recipes are either too complicated, or too unhealthy, often loaded with fats and oils.

You don’t have 100% perfect to make this diet work.

You only have to focus all of your attention on the things that truly matter — what I call the 20% that gives you 80% of the results.

1) Eat enough whole fruit and complex carbohydrates
2) Have a system for food prep that rotates tasty meals that are easy to prepare in advance.

Don’t aim at perfection. Choose a program that works and makes you happy. Focus on just a few changes that will make the biggest difference in your health, rather than trying to change everything.

Maybe your food is not always organic. Maybe you might add some salt and seasonings to your food, instead of eating everything plain. So what? As long as you focus on the 20% that matters, you’ll get 80% of the results, and more!

Lies and Misinformation About Dental Health Common in Raw Food World – by Frederic Patenaude

Because of the widespread misinformation found in the raw food world, many people continue to unnecessarily experience dental problems.

Many famous raw foodists I know have come out, either privately or publicly, to discuss the massive dental problems that they’ve experienced. But many haven’t.

So the lies and misinformation continue to be spread around.

Let’s take a look at some of the most harming pieces of misinformation that you might come across.

1) That the raw vegan diet does not cause more cavities

Although it’s true that diet itself is not the root cause of dental decay, it can act as fast-burning fuel for the development of huge dental problems. When you understand how to keep your teeth so healthy and your oral environment so clean, you could eat a diet of twinkies all day and never get cavities, sensitive teeth or any other dental problems. But if you start on the wrong foot, and lack this information on keeping your teeth cavity-free for life, you could end up with big dental disasters on the raw vegan diet.

Raw vegans experience more dental problems than any other group. That is the truth!

Don’t let any other raw vegan guru tell you otherwise. Their followers have bad teeth — almost all of them do after some time.

2) If you avoid dried fruits and nuts, you’ll be okay

Some will say that as long as you avoid dried fruits (like dates), don’t drink fruit juice and don’t eat too many nuts or dried foods, you’ll be okay. That is not true. A diet composed exclusively of fresh foods, such as plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, will also lead to dental problems if proper precautions are not taken.

3) It’s all genetic

The good news: 2% of the population is total immune to dental decay. We don’t know why. Something in their mouths prevents bacteria from forming colonies, no matter what they eat. The bad news: 98% of the population isn’t.

When a raw vegan tells you that their dental problems are caused by their “bad genes,” they act just like the rest of the people who say that their heart attack was caused by family history alone.

4) Fluoride should be avoided at all cost

This is one of the most damaging lies spread in the natural health movement.

Although I don’t support adding fluoride to drinking water or other substances, like salt, the proper topical use of fluoride is one of the things that you can do that can truly make the most difference. My favorite being a fluoride rinse with no extra additives, also containing xylitol, another substance that’s very important in preventing and reversing dental problems.

5) It’s all fruit’s fault

On the other hand, we have many anti-fruits advocates who blame fruit as the cause of dental problems, because of its sugar content. But the truth is that sugar itself doesn’t cause dental decay: acid does. It’s the eating away of the enamel by acidity, produced by bacteria, that causes decay. The bacteria thrive in an acidic environment. So it’s very important to keep your mouth alkaline at all times.

People who eat a raw vegan diet with little fruit also end up with serious dental problems because of all of the acid-containing foods they consume. Of course, they don’t know how to keep their mouths alkaline.

The Solution

Once you know how to keep your mouth healthy, with strong teeth and no bacterial colonies and no acidity, you can eat whatever you want!

At that point, your diet won’t cause any problems, even if you like to eat lots of dates.

Just telling people to avoid certain foods is not enough. In fact, in most cases, it won’t make a difference.
