How to Do a One-Day Water Fast by Frederic Patenaude

When I fast, I don’t drink any juice. I find fasting easier that way, and I believe that juice fasting maintains hunger without leading to as many benefits.

I also never fast on a “schedule.” Even though last year I fasted every week for 36 hours for several months in a row, I stopped after doing enough of it. Always listen to your body when fasting. (But the trick is knowing how to listen!)

I also don’t practice such as eating only 500 calories for one day, such as in the 5:2 Diet. It’s easier to fast drinking only water. That way there is nothing to organize, nothing to think about, and you stop the fast whenever you are ready.

The Benefits of a 24 to 36 Hour Fast

A short fast is not true fasting because the body never fully enters into ketone metabolism, where it burns body fat exclusively for energy. So it’s more a “digestive rest.” But it offers quite a few benefits:

Reduced blood lipids (decreased triglycerides and LDL cholesterol)
Lower body fat
Reduced blood pressure
Reduced chronic inflammation (CRP, IL-6, TNF, BDNF, and more)
Reduced oxidative stress
Reduced cancer risk
Increased fat burning
Improved appetite control
Increased insulin sensitivity and decreased insulin levels
Improved cardiovascular function
Improved memory and cognitive function
My main reason for fasting fast is because it makes me feel good!

It’s the best way I found to reset real hunger and appetite, uplift mood and get some rest.

And even though fasting is never without some efforts, I have enough experience with it to slip into a 36 hour fast comfortably. Let me give you some tips.

The Easiest Way to Approach a Fast

First, you have to understand that you’ve conditioned your body to eat at certain times. If you feel hungry in the morning, that is not real hunger but rather conditioning. Your body is used to request food whether it’s truly hungry or not.

When you fast for 24 to 26 hours, your body uses its immediate reserves: food still being digested, glycogen in the muscles and liver. It might partly shift to ketone bodies as an energy source but not 100%.

So the first approach to fasting for a day is understanding that you’re not fasting. You’re only delaying your first meal of the day!

How Are You Feeling Now?

The most important piece of advice I can give you about fasting is that you should mentally “chunk it” into blocks of time of one or a few hours.

When you start your fast, you might be thinking to yourself, “Wow, this is difficult. I don’t think I’ll be able to make it.”

What you have to realize, and this comes with practice, is that whatever you’re feeling right now is temporary. The feelings will pass.

My goal when I fast for 24 to 36 hours is to reach the “euphoria” part of the fast when fasting becomes easy. This feeling usually occurs after 4 p.m. After that, fasting is a breeze. In fact, fasting is easy for MOST of the time when doing such a long fast. But it can be difficult some of the time. Here’s how to go about it.

Going to Bed

You can choose to eat a very light dinner or not, eat it early or eat it late. I say do whatever you normally do. Going to bed is the first part of the fast. It’s easy because we fast every night when we sleep!

Fasting Until Noon

The next chunk of the fast is fasting until noon — thereby skipping breakfast. Many people do this all the time, so it’s not that hard. If you regularly drink coffee, I say drink some then or drink some green tea. It’s not worth it going through a fast AND have to detox caffeine at the same time. But switching to green tea is a good idea.

Getting Over the Afternoon Crash

The most difficult part of a 1-day fast is the afternoon. You’ll feel good until right around 1 p.m. or when you start to feel genuine hunger. That’s when you’re starting to think that you won’t last until the end of the day.

If you continue, you might start to feel tired in the afternoon, which coincides with circadian rhythms.

I like to consider this fatigue as “rest.” That’s why I prefer to fast on a Sunday. I will nap at that time and get the most wonderful rest.

Whenever I feel like breaking the fast during that period, I tell myself, “Try another hour and decide then.” I know that whatever I’m feeling at the moment will pass.

The Evening High

This is when the fast becomes fun and exciting. The endorphins kick in, and you feel great. Your mood is positive, and it’s then no problem to continue the fast or break it.

You can decide to break the fast for a 24 hour fast.

Or you can choose to go to bed “hungry.” Listen to your body. I usually find that I feel good enough to go to sleep on an empty stomach and fast until the next day. But sometimes I want to eat and break the fast, so I do it.

Sleeping On An Empty Stomach

It’s not that difficult to fast through the night if you put your mind to it. For many people sleep is a bit lighter and for some deeper. I experience deeper sleep on the first days of the fast, so I do enjoy this night! Your energy should be good the next day because fasters don’t require as much sleep.

People who sleep well tend to sleep less during a fast and those who have sleep problems tend to sleep better.

If you wake up in the middle of the night and are genuinely hungry, then break the fast then with some fruit and go back to bed. Otherwise, you can fast until the morning.

The Morning

It’s surprising that most mornings, after fasting for over 32-36 hours, I am rarely hungry. I often have to decide to break the fast because I often feel like I could go on. Sometimes I do go on and wait for hunger to come back, which can take many hours and take me to a 40 or even 48 hour fast.

But if you have important work to do that day, break the fast no matter how hungry you are.

Breaking the Fast

Breaking a short fast is not something that requires a lot of planning. A longer fast weakens your digestion, so re-feeding becomes the most critical aspect of the fast.

I suggest that you eat whole fruit. It will taste amazing! And your energy will quickly come back.

Then act as if the fast never happened. Continue with your day but listen to your body. You may be hungrier than usual or not. Just follow your hunger and don’t question it. Try to eat as healthy as you can, and hopefully healthier than you did before the fast.

After a fast, you might recalibrate your taste buds enough to make a few changes, such as drinking less caffeine, switching to tea, quitting tea, eating more raw food, eating less salt, going vegan, going raw, etc. You’ll be more in tune with what your body needs!

A few people cannot fast for even just 24 hours. People with diabetes fall into that category. Your doctor can advise you.

Raw Food Fanaticism – by Frederic Patenaude

Raw Food Fanaticism – by Frederic Patenaude

I started experimenting with my diet back in 1996, and ever since I’ve been searching for the healthiest, yet most practical way to eat and live.

I first went on a very strict (and confused!) natural hygiene diet. From there I began making my way into raw foods and experimenting with various types of raw food diets.

After that I experimented with cooked foods again, then back to raw foods, and have since been fine-tuning my diet to find the ideal.

There was a time when I wouldn’t have touched a piece of bread with a 10-foot pole, but was perfectly fine with gorging myself with fancy raw recipes and avocados, just to make sure that I wouldn’t awaken my “cooked food cells” and stayed raw.

There was a time when I did everything in my power to eat the freshest, best organic raw foods there was, yet was not feeling the vitality or mental clarity I had before I was even a vegetarian.

There was a time when I binged on all sorts of cooked foods I had sworn never to eat again, out of the frustration that the raw diet was not working for me, and the shame I had for not having succeeded.

I now look back at these difficult days and realize that all of this turmoil was unnecessary. I worked things out using the empirical approach — that is to try everything out in order to come to my own conclusions. This is a time-wasting technique, but it did allow me to truly learn these things for myself.

In that process, I learned that:

The means is not the end. Being a raw-foodist for example, is not the point. We shouldn’t focus on that.

We have to keep in mind what we’re doing this for. In that search for the perfect diet, we’re doing this to be healthy and enjoy life more — not to achieve an “ideal.”
Willpower is not enough to maintain, we need knowledge too. You can have the willpower to climb 10,000 stairs, but why waste so much energy when there’s a lift that will take you to the top in no time? Using the lift is like utilizing proper knowledge.

My Introduction to Rawdom

In 1996, I was 20 years old and quite easily impressed by what appeared to be logical or scientific information.

The piece of advice that I came across when I first heard of the concept of raw eating seemed logical, but proved to be quite misleading to others and myself. It went something like this:

“Eating raw foods is the most natural way to eat. All that you have to do is follow your instincts and eat as much as you want, as long as you are eating fresh raw fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds.”

Impressed by the simplicity of this system-less-system, I embarked on a journey that led me through deep nutritional imbalances.

But first, the advice worked. I packed my fridge with fruits and vegetables and was eating all day long. I didn’t know about recipes or durian. I ate lots of food and went through a quite intense period of detoxification.

I went through it and was feeling mostly good, even though I was still struggling with cravings. My will was as strong as could be and I was ready to be a raw-foodist for life and change the world along the way.

The next part of my journey took me to California, where I discovered raw food recipes, an exciting world where all my repressed cravings could express themselves again.

Pizza, chocolate cake, and pasta were back on the menu again. All raw of course.

I was eating lots of fat, lots of raw food recipes, and lots of fruit, and I was just not feeling right.

More Misleading Advice

Two new pieces of raw food lore would prove to be fatal for me. The first was, “Anything raw is better than anything cooked” and the second, “it’s probably detoxification.”

So I kept eating and eating and kept saying to myself: “well, it’s raw.” I kept feeling bad and kept saying to myself: “it’s probably detoxification.”

The Raw-Food Movement

Since then, the raw-food movement has been changing the way that it’s presented and many of the ideologies behind it.

Yet many raw food books are still filled with made-up facts, bogus science, anecdotal evidence that just isn’t relevant to everybody.

One person says that eating fruit will make you sick; the other one says that you should only eat fruit.

One says that eating oil is bad for you; the other one recommends that you should eat lots of oil.

Here are a few false statement made by raw-foodists I’d like to clear the air on once and for all.

“Cooked food is toxic.”

Statements like this are what tend to give the raw food movement a bad name.
Cooking food doesn’t immediately turn it into something toxic. If this were as true as some people say, no one would be alive!

It is true that certain methods of cooking, such as frying and barbecuing, create many carcinogenic substances in the process.

But claiming that all cooked food is toxic is just silly.

“Anything raw is better than anything cooked.”

Reality check: Many raw food meals prepared at most raw restaurants do not fall in the category of “healthy food.” Many of them contain unnecessarily high amounts of salt, oils, and spices.

The fact that a food is raw doesn’t make it necessarily healthy. There is more to a healthy diet plan than just eating raw, just as there is more to health than just eating.

“Fruit is bad for you.”

Most raw-foodists are living on such a high-fat diet (often more than 60-70% fat) that they can no longer handle fruit anymore. It has been proven that high-fat diets decrease insulin sensitivity (the effectiveness of insulin in carrying sugar to the cells), and thus raise blood sugar levels.

So those living on high fat a diet, that is most raw-foodists, will inevitably experience more blood sugar swings when they eat fruit.

Thus, the myth has spread now that fruit is not very healthy and that we should all aim at eliminating or reducing the quantity of fruit in our diet.
Fruit is definitely one of the healthiest (and most palatable!) raw foods you can eat.

So whenever you hear a bold statement that is the contrary of all common sense, such as “fruit is not a healthy food” — don’t take it for cash. Study the facts first and decide for yourself.

Raw Food Hype

The raw food diet has become more and more popular over the years. Celebrities are now jumping on board; raw food restaurants are popping up in most major cities, the media is talking about it, and articles have been published in many magazines and newspapers.

Raw-foodists usually rejoice when they see another article in the mainstream about the raw food diet, yet many of the time the message being conveyed to the masses really isn’t the healthiest one.

Many of these articles start by quoting raw-foodists (mostly out of the context) expressing statements such as “cooked food is poison” or “cooking kills your food,” then they go on to talk about all the movie and pop music stars who are supposedly into it, they mention raw gourmet cuisine and raw-restaurants, and then conclude the article with a few nutritionist bashing and scoffing at the whole theory.

There is more validity and merit to the raw food diet than just a passing phase for the media to take advantage of or for celebrities to temporarily hop on board with!

“Raw Food” Means Really Raw

Raw foods are fruits and vegetables in their natural state, not dehydrated for hours and turned into crackers, raw cookies, and cakes.

Prepared raw foods can still have a place in a healthy diet, but it really isn’t what the whole prospect of eating raw foods is really about.

A plate of steamed broccoli is closer to being a natural food than a raw cheeseburger or raw cake sold at a raw restaurant somewhere.

Eating raw is about filling our bodies with an abundance of natural vitamins, minerals, organic water, fiber, and all the nutrients needed to meet our needs, both for energy and maintenance. Time and time again, these needs are met the best with foods that are in their freshest, most natural form.

Beyond Fanaticism

If you are 100% raw and feel wonderful and someone comes along to tell you that what you are doing is killing you, I recommend you don’t waste any time discussing it. Just go along with your life and let them think what they will.

If you are eating 50% raw and feel great and some annoying raw-foodist comes along and just, “can’t believe that you don’t eat 100% raw” — just forget them too. You are here to eat and do what makes you feel your best, not rise to the expectations of others around you.

What are you doing this for anyway? Because you want to call yourself a raw-foodist or a vegan? Hopefully not!

Hopefully, you are eating and living the way you do because it’s what feels right to you and allows you to look and feel your very best.

Eating raw is not the end-all, it’s simply a means to get you where you want to go.

My Cleansing Repertoire – Using Volcanic Mineral Refresher Water – Reactions and Results

My Cleansing Repertoire – Using Mineral-Rich Water Reactions and Results

I have done many types of cleanses/fasts since 2004, after reading “The Miracle of Fasting,” by Paul and Patricia Bragg. This one is totally different in its beginning phase, as I decided I would like to try drinking water that is mineral-rich and comes directly from nature, in its pristine, pure state and also has a higher alkaline pH then most people get when they filter their water (also most water filters, unless they are “super” expensive don’t get the fluoride out (which has been added recently to San Diego (where I reside) and probably various other things. My friend, Todd, who is also the Southwestern Sales Manager for this water (no he did not influence me to use this water for my cleanse, I tried a bottle he gave me a month ago). As I am a true purist, I wanted to use this Volcanic Mineral Refresher (, to see if I feel any different then when I have used my filtered water in the past for fasting/cleansing. I can tell you, that when I first tried it, it tasted sweeter because of the naturally occurring minerals and I liked it.

I will document when I drank the water and how much of it I consumed per day, so you will have an idea of how my body works (I stress, my body, because everyone is different and since I have been doing this a long time I may drink less then others do per day, but please listen to your own body and drink as much as you need to stay on the cleanse/fast).

When I do my cleanses, I refrain from doing any intense exercise/activity. I stick to walking and some stretching. I prefer to give my body a rest and resume my regular routine once I have started my food consumption.

I advise you to educate yourselves adequately and seek advise from a qualified health professional/specialist before embarking on any program like this, especially if you have any current conditions and have never fasted/cleansed before. I recommend trying it for one day a week if you are starting out. If you are looking to do a long term cleanse/fast please do so at a cleansing center that can support and monitor you so that you don’t put your self/health in jeopardy. The information contained here, is not intended as a diagnosis, cure or treatment for any disease or ailment. Neither I, nor Volcanic Mineral Refresher and their associates accept liability or responsibility for any adverse consequences you might encounter in using this product.

My first 3 days using Volcanic Mineral Refresher Only

Day 1- Thursday February 23. 2012
Today was the first day of my cleanse. Lately, when I do my quarterly cleanse, I usually use my filtered water with stevia and coconut water from Day 1. This time, I am doing only water and I would call it a fast. The pH of this water is 7.24 – if you are not aware of it. I was not thirsty right away in the morning and did not start drinking till 10:30am. From my first drink of this water, it was sweet, fresh and smooth; the way water is supposed to taste like! I don’t think I will want to go back to drinking from my “filter,” once I am done with this cleanse. I did do a comparison taste test when I first tried this water and I can say, hands-down, this was much better.
I did some cleaning around my place and went for a walk.
For your own reference, each glass bottle has a total of 25.4 oz.

Consumption for the day: Total – 38.5 oz (close to 5 cups)
10:30 am – 3:30 pm – 1 bottle
5 pm – 7:30 pm – ½ bottle

As you can see, I did not drink that much water today and most times when I start my cleanse I do a dry fast – no food or water – for a day or longer (again, I don’t recommend you do this, if you have never done so and only under supervision). I found that I was satisfied with the amount I drank and did not feel hungry at all (I also have a very strong mind and willpower to “stick” with what I plan on doing.

Day 2- Friday February 24. 2012

Today, I started my consumption of water somewhat earlier and desired more. For me, it is more about the farther I get away from the last food I consumed (which was Wednesday evening, February 22nd), the more I need something (in this case, the water), to “fill in” for my lack of food. I still felt OK with no issues in my head (i.e. some people develop a headache when they stop eating food, especially in the first few days, as the body and mind need to create a syncronicity of adapting to life without food). When I drank my filtered water to start, I did still have some “heady” issues, so to speak, so this is definitely a positive result. I believe it is due to the naturally occurring minerals which keep the body more alkaline and able to compensate well for the lack of nourishment in the form of food.

I did not go out for a walk today because it was mostly cloudy. I did clean my apartment – dusting and floors.

Consumption for the day: Total – 64.1 oz (8 cups)
9:45 am – 11:10 am – ½ bottle
11:40 am – 2 pm – 1 bottle
2:30 pm – 5:40 pm – 1 bottle

Day 3- Saturday February 25, 2012

Today, I started drinking the water at the same time as yesterday, but was feeling more sluggish/lethargic I therefore did best for myself by consuming more water. Again, I had no headache or felt the need/desire to eat any food (I still have lots of fruit in my fridge for consumption after I complete this cleanse, but it is not tempting to me at all and again, I do have strong(er) will power then most!). Since, my energy was lower today, I did rest/nap some in the afternoon (important to listen to your body signals and adjust accordingly) and that helped, too.

I went for a walk today, but was shorter then usual because there was a cool wind blowing and I felt chilly (this happens, especially when you are not doing exercise that raises your heart rate)

Consumption for the day: Total – 76.4 oz (~9 ½ cups)
9:45 am – 12 pm – 1 bottle
12:30 pm – 4:30 pm – 1 bottle
6 pm – 9 pm – 1 bottle
As you can notice yourselves, there was an increase from the first day to the third day of this fast. I felt like I hydrated my body very well and don’t believe it would likely be such with my filtered water (I would also have to add stevia, which has minerals when I drink it because I don’t care for the taste that much). Years ago, I did a 3 week cleanse, in which the first week was drinking water only with nothing in it and I did it. I honestly do not think I could do that again. With this mineralized water, I know I can! In the future, I may even try a longer water only fast since this works much better for me.

The next phase of this cleanse will be another 3 days on water only from another source. It is pure and in its pristine state with a pH of 8.76. It will be very interesting to see if I feel any differences in my body compared to the 7.24 pH water I have been drinking thus far.

Disclaimer: I was not sponsored to write this, but I did receive a sample of the product(s). These are strictly my opinions. I only review products that I, myself would use and purchase.

Q and A Series: People, Products and the Health of Our Planet – Interview with Robby Wharton of Morningstar Minerals

For the fifth interview, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Robby Wharton, Production Manager at Morningstar Minerals. I first met Robby at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, CA a few years ago. There are lots of booths/vendors there giving out samples/products and I am not inclined to take everything that is given me. I am a “purist” in every sense of the word. I eat food that is raw, whole, fresh and organic and nothing that is processed (I eat fruits, vegetables, greens and small amounts of fats that include nuts, seeds and avocados). I also only use the purest products on my skin/body, as well.

So, what does this have to do with this interview, you may ask? When I walked by the booth that Robby was in, he handed me a bag with samples. It wasn’t a plastic, paper or canvas bag. It stood out to me because it was a weaved bag with a plastic see-through front(I am a “bag-aholic,” so when I see someone with a bag at the Expo or elsewhere that I like, I have to have it! I am not talking about a purse/handbag, but rather ones that I can use for shopping, but some I have used like a handbag). I loved the bag and did come back again so I could get more bags(I wanted to give them for presents, too, not just for “selfish me”). I had a chance to look through the products that were in there and my favorite turned out to be the Derma Boost Skin Rejuvenator (their supplements are great, but I personally don’t use any). I sprayed it on my face and felt instantly refreshed and renewed. From then on I was hooked on the product and have been using it regularly for a few years now. I even got Robby to send me some as a birthday present – Thanks, Robby! 🙂 I also learned from Robby more about the fulvic minerals that were discovered by the owner of the company that have extremely beneficial properties to the body. We need minerals to keep the alkaline balance in our body so we can thrive at being alive!

To access Morningstar Minerals Website, please click on the link I have provided on the right-hand side of the page under the column titled Blogroll. You will learn more about the minerals in their products that they mine and process themselves and why they are so unique and revolutionary. If you click on Resources, on the website you will see a video that tells you more about the company.

Question #1: Tell me briefly about yourself and why you decided to get involved in the “health” industry?

16 years ago I started working for a new company and met the owner Geoff McMahon he is a life time vegetarian and marathon runner and has been into nutrition for some time. I have been suffering from a mining accident for some years now and had been taking vitamins and herbal supplements but with little relief from my pain this is when he told me about minerals, raw food, water and how they help give your body the nutrients and ability to heal. After doing this for 2 weeks I started feeling the difference in my mobility.

Question #2: If you were stranded on a desert island and were allowed to take only 5 items with you (they can be food, books or specific products that are all health-related), what would they be and why?

Food – would be greens and lemons
Book – would be the Bible
Our Organic Soil Activator this will make the sandy soil more nutritious for the plants and fruits that is already there and for the garden we grow.
Plenty of veggie seeds to grow a garden

Question #3: What one message do you want to share with the people of this world that is crucial for their ultimate well-being and longevity?

Drink good clean water and at least a 50/50 diet of raw foods.

Questions #4: If someone could afford to purchase only one product at this
moment to start their journey towards better health (food or health-related), what would you recommend and why?

A water purifier, people do not drink enough water.

Question #5: Tell me more about your business/company and/or products you offer to to help them achieve optimal health and well-being?

Morningstar Minerals promotes Health Wellness Vitality
All our products help the body to stay alkaline and help the body absorb the nutrients we need to stay healthy.
Energy boost 70 is a great electrolyte that helps the body absorb the nutrients and vitamins we need.
Vitality boost HA is the best for high mineral intake and it also has the ability to absorb heavy metals toxins, viral loads from the body and is great for detoxification.
Inner Vitality is a combination of energy boost 70 and vitality boost ha. This product has the best of both worlds and helps with keeping focused and concentration.

Question #6: What are your hopes/aspirations/dreams for the future health of the people and the planet?

People have no knowledge how easy it is to control there heath problems just by diet and exercise. If people would just take there health into there own hands they would discover how LIFE should be with out all the pharmaceuticals they consume and the other problems it can cause.

Question #7: Who is your greatest hero and why?

My Boss, Geoff McMahon, who taught me how to take my health into my own hands and it works!!

Question #8: Is there anything else you would like to share with the public?

Our bodies are made up of mostly water. The biggest problem I have seen is that people do not drink enough water. Water is what we need not just to stay hydrated but to keep us flushed from the toxins we get just by living day to day.
