Acid vs. Alkaline Balance for Weight Loss by Cynthia Om

Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired? Are you frustrated with carrying extra
weight? Well these are sure signs that you have had enough of living with an acidic
condition in the body. Just as our body works to maintain a body temperature of 98.6, it
is also striving to achieve a blood pH balance of 7.365. This can only be achieved
directly by what we eat and what we feel. When we consume foods on the acidic side,
such as, coffee, meat, dairy, processed food, refined sugar, and if we feel stress our
blood becomes acidic and our body naturally adds fat to protect the organs from the
acidic condition. This acidic condition is a breeding ground for a number of diseases
such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and many others. They all stem from acidic blood.

When we consume foods of an alkaline nature, such as, green leaves, vegetables, fresh
filtered water, coconut water, almonds, etc. our blood then begins to become alkaline,
ridding the body of excess protective weight. You begin to feel lighter and have more
energy; after, first passing through a stage of detoxification which may involve lethargy,
fatigue, headaches, and flu-like symptoms.

Blood pH is not the only important factor in weight loss, it is also aided by the enzymes
that are found in raw plant foods. Enzymes are responsible for every function of the
body and work hard to keep you healthy and rejuvenating. As you begin to clean your
blood you will begin to notice your appearance becoming more youthful. You body is
like an energy bank. When you are eating or drinking you are either making a deposit
(health, vitality, and energy) or a withdrawal (sickness, tiredness, weight gain). So next
time you go to eat or drink you have the choice to feel better. Don’t you want to choose

Q and A Series: People, Products and the Health of Our Planet – Interview with Niki Price, Co-Founder of inner-ēco™, Coconut Water Probiotic

For the sixteenth interview, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Niki Price, co-founder of inner-ēco™, coconut water probiotic, in business since 2008.

My Comments

I had started looking into consuming more fermented products that are beneficial to the health of our gut/colon/intestinal flora. I prefer to do it this way instead of taking a “pill.” I enjoy eating raw fermented sauerkraut because it tastes really good and is also good for you. I have reviewed a few different fermented food companies on my blog and also youtube channel. I have started to see in the health food stores liquid probiotic made with fresh coconut water and wanted to try it out for myself. I contacted this company, inner-ēco™, and they obliged to send me a coupon to get a bottle at my local health food store. They do not ship this product because it needs to be keep cold at all times because of the live cultures present inside the bottle. I am also happy that they package it in a glass bottle that is an amber color – which protects/preserves the ingredients inside from diminishing in value due to exposure to light.

The first time I had a spoonful of it, I really liked it and reminded me of ginger ale, except this is not carbonated, colored or made with any chemicals. It is a living food product! It comes in 3 flavors: Original, Tropical and Wild Berry. I tried the original because I wanted to have it without any added ingredients. I usually consume a tablespoon every day and have been for about 10 days, as of this being written. I can not say that I have noticed any specific change to my health, but I will still continue to consume it because I know it good for my physical health.

The only caveat, is that when I pour from the bottle onto my spoon, I always seem to lose some into the sink. There is no spout, so maybe I will use a glass under it, so I do not have to waste any. It is very precious and valuable and want it in my body and not down the drain. I mentioned this to Niki in an email and she mentioned that it is best to pour it in a shot glass.

Question #1: Tell me briefly about yourself and why you decided to get involved in the “health” industry?

My history involved struggles with candidiasis, my son had a compromised immune system due to too many antibiotics for chronic ear infections, and just having two young children who began drinking inner-eco regularly hardly EVER got sick.

My background is in elementary education. I am all self-taught in health. I’ve always been into health and nutrition and came across the recipe for coconut water Kefir out of a book called Body Ecology by Donna Gates. She is the pioneer, I figured out a way to package it and perfect the recipe.

Question #2: If you were stranded on a desert island and were allowed to take only 5 items with you (they can be food, books or specific products that are all health-related), what would they be and why?

I would want good clean water, my inner-eco, my green drink, fresh nuts and fresh fruit.

Question #3: What one message do you want to share with the people of this world that is crucial for their ultimate well-being and longevity?

Use good stress management techniques- take care of yourself by taking care of others. Pay it forward spread goodwill serve others.

Questions #4: If someone could afford to purchase only one product at this moment to start their journey towards better health (food or health-related), what would you recommend and why?

Any product that is GMO free!

Question #5: Tell me more about your business/company and/or products you offer to the public to help them achieve optimal health and well-being?

We offer a product that is fresh, clean of chemicals, pasteurization and healing to the soul and body. This product is about adding fermented foods into your diet. My Experiences/Experiment Dry Fasting 4 and 3/4 Days: Not for the Faint at Heart

Saturday June 1, 2013 @ 8:45pm – Beginning of Fast

Tonight I decided to start my fast. Since the Sabbath starts on Friday night, I would only do it for 6 days in total. It is forbidden to fast on that day, because it is a day to be in joy and fasting is done mostly for suffering/mourning. Not to say that it is suggested that one fast all the time. In the Jewish tradition we have fasts a couple times a year that are required and other that are recommended. This type of fasting is DRY FASTING. This means that you neither eat nor drink for a full day.

I, myself have done dry fasting (aside from the religious ones and when I initially started at 12 years of age, it was more difficult, as I did not have the same food habits as I do now) for as long as 3 and 3/4 days prior to now. The first time I read about this was in a book by Tonya Zavasta, “Quantum Eating.” (Click on the picture of Tonya on the right-hand side of this page to go directly to her website). In the book, she mentions that the Russsians use this as a manner of treatment for many different ailments/diseases under medical supervision, of course. One doctors mentions that you can go as long as 14 days without consumption of water/food. After I read this part of the book, I decided to try this for myself for a day and felt wonderful (I have done various types of cleansing programs since 2004 and feel comfortable with trying out things like this on my own and know what to expect, but I don’t suggest this for anyone to do on their own).

After that, whenever I did a cleanse, I would first dry fast for as long as I could do so. I do not find it hard at all because my body has gotten used to it. Tonight I went to sleep and felt fine because I had a meal before going to sleep.

Sunday June 2, 2013 – First full day of Dry Fast

The first day I did have elimination twice and some urination, too. Of course, not as much as when I consume my normal fare. I felt fine today with no problems at all. I do not engage in any activities such as intensive exercise when I do any of my fasts/cleanses. I may still do some activity, but keep it at a minimum to conserve my energy. I went out in the afternoon for a short while to spend some time on nature. I did feel a bit more tired and went to sleep by 10pm.

Monday June 3, 2013 – Second day of Dry Fast

I eliminated once this morning and urinated, too. I still had some urination today, but much less then usual and was a deeper yellow color. I still do not feel the need to drink anything. The weather has also been cooler outside, so that probably helps, as well. I felt ok, for the most part and stayed home all day. I went to bed earlier then usual because I was tired – by approximately 10pm.

Tuesday June 4, 2013 – Third day of Dry Fast

Still had some elimination this morning. Feeling no need for water. I know that I will probably dry fast longer then previously, but I will pay attention to how I feel so I will know if I need to drink or not. So far, I do not feel dry in the mouth or dehydrated. Most people would not do this and again, I don’t recommend it at all! I also have been doing this in the city and not in the mountains with pristine air and no noise/light pollution. I am also not resting exactly the way it would be best for me to have the optimal results – meaning no phones, computers, reading, driving, etc.

For those who would want to do a fasting program the right way, it is best to go to a facility that is specifically designed for this, such as TrueNorth Health Center in California http://www.healthpromoting.com/ Also Dr. Doug Graham (raw vegan 80/10/10 program) has a supervised water fasting program in Costa Rica – check out his website for dates http://www.foodnsport.com

Tonight I went to sleep closer to 11pm, but did not sleep well. I woke up and stayed up for a while. I started to notice a build up of mucus near the tip of my eyes in the inside part close to the tear duct. It was more then I usually see when I wake up in the morning.

Wednesday June 4, 2013 – Fourth day of Dry Fast

I woke up and when I tried to open my eyes, they were “glued” shut from the mucus build up around my eyes. I had to clean it out with water by the sink. Throughout the day, I continued to have more mucus in my eyes. I tried to used my fingers to clean it out, but that wasn’t the optimal way. I irritated my eyes and they were getting red and dry. Instead I used water to flush them. For you to understand more in detail what was happening with my eyes: as I would blink my eyes, after a while I could see there was some cloudiness in them and then it moved down to my lower lids and the mucus would stay there until I removed it. I never had this happen when I have a done a fast/cleanse, in the past. I would usually have mucus leave my body through my nose or throat.

Today I only had urination minimally, but no elimination. I still did not feel thirsty or the need to drink any water. I decided to go out and do some shopping and errands. I was out for a couple of hours and got everything done. I did feel a bit worn out when I came home, so I rested for a while. I went to bed tonight about 11pm. I went to sleep, but woke up again in the middle of the night. My eyes were glued shut again and I had to wash them out. I stayed awake and worked on the computer until my eyes were shutting.

Thursday June 6, 2013 – Fifth day of Dry Fast/Cleanse

When I woke, my eyes were glued shut again from the mucus and were a bit red and irritated. All day I had to wash them out because the build up was constant. I did not have a bowel movement today. I was still urinating some. My tongue had a heavy white coating on it, as well. I felt ok, but decided anyway, that I would end my dry fast at 4 and 3/4 days. Since I’d begin eating some food tomorrow night, I wanted to get some fluids into my body before that time.

I had my first cup of water at 2:45pm and then some Harmless Harvest raw organic coconut water (I have a review of their company on my blog, for a cleanse that I did – search in the archives for it). My head was not used to the fluid and had to adjust to it. I actually felt more tired after drinking because now my body had to start working to digest it, whereas before it was in a different state of existence without having to do much “work.” Digestion is work and takes energy. I drank some more water and also finished the 16oz bottle of the coconut water by the end of the day.

I went to sleep by about 11pm and felt more weary and had less energy then when I consumed nothing at all. It is amazing how the body works and to see for myself how I would feel. Of course, I could probably do it longer, but I would have to take a break for the Sabbath and then start over again for another six days. I may try that at another point or else try to do this once a month to give my body a “true” rest so it can heal properly. The body does not heal when it is “busy” digesting, rather when you are sleeping it can renew and rejuvenate itself.

Friday June 7, 2013 – Sixth/last day of Cleanse

I woke up twice in the night. Once was to wash out my eyes because they were glued shut from the build up of mucus. I got up again at about 5:20am to wash out my eyes again from the build up and to urinate. I went back to sleep and awoke at 9am. I felt more sluggish then yesterday when I awoke (perhaps because I was not used to consuming anything, that even having the water and coconut water took more processing for my body and it had to adjust to it). My neck felt tight and my eyes were glued shut again and I had to wash them out. I did urinate and eliminate a small amount this morning. I noticed that my tongue still had a heavy white coating.

I decided to clean my bathroom thoroughly this morning and it took a toll on my energy, so I lay down on my bed for a while. I drank some coconut water and water at ~11am and then again at 2:30pm. I feel a bit more energetic. I had some slight mucus around my eye today, but nothing like I had yesterday, thank G-d!

I drank again some coconut water at ~ 4pm and then again at 5:20pm. I finished the 16oz bottle and that is all I had for today. I am still feeling a bit sluggish, but not as much as this morning. I did clean my room (dust and wash the floor) to get ready for the Sabbath, as I like it to be clean for this special and Holy Day!

Tonight I will eat for the Sabbath, but have a small amount of blended fruit and chew it well because my stomach has shrunk and I have to get used to food. I plan to take it slowly to equal the amount of days I have not eaten so my body can resume its regular food consumption. If I eat too much, too fast I tend to get a headache, bloating and gas and that is not an optimal way to come off of a fast/cleanse.

My Cleansing Repertoire – Using Volcanic Mineral Refresher Water – Reactions and Results

My Cleansing Repertoire – Using Mineral-Rich Water Reactions and Results

I have done many types of cleanses/fasts since 2004, after reading “The Miracle of Fasting,” by Paul and Patricia Bragg. This one is totally different in its beginning phase, as I decided I would like to try drinking water that is mineral-rich and comes directly from nature, in its pristine, pure state and also has a higher alkaline pH then most people get when they filter their water (also most water filters, unless they are “super” expensive don’t get the fluoride out (which has been added recently to San Diego (where I reside) and probably various other things. My friend, Todd, who is also the Southwestern Sales Manager for this water (no he did not influence me to use this water for my cleanse, I tried a bottle he gave me a month ago). As I am a true purist, I wanted to use this Volcanic Mineral Refresher (volcanicmineralrefresher.com), to see if I feel any different then when I have used my filtered water in the past for fasting/cleansing. I can tell you, that when I first tried it, it tasted sweeter because of the naturally occurring minerals and I liked it.

I will document when I drank the water and how much of it I consumed per day, so you will have an idea of how my body works (I stress, my body, because everyone is different and since I have been doing this a long time I may drink less then others do per day, but please listen to your own body and drink as much as you need to stay on the cleanse/fast).

When I do my cleanses, I refrain from doing any intense exercise/activity. I stick to walking and some stretching. I prefer to give my body a rest and resume my regular routine once I have started my food consumption.

My first 3 days using Volcanic Mineral Refresher Only

Day 1- Thursday February 23. 2012
Today was the first day of my cleanse. Lately, when I do my quarterly cleanse, I usually use my filtered water with stevia and coconut water from Day 1. This time, I am doing only water and I would call it a fast. The pH of this water is 7.24 – if you are not aware of it. I was not thirsty right away in the morning and did not start drinking till 10:30am. From my first drink of this water, it was sweet, fresh and smooth; the way water is supposed to taste like! I don’t think I will want to go back to drinking from my “filter,” once I am done with this cleanse. I did do a comparison taste test when I first tried this water and I can say, hands-down, this was much better.
I did some cleaning around my place and went for a walk.
For your own reference, each glass bottle has a total of 25.4 oz.

Consumption for the day: Total – 38.5 oz (close to 5 cups)
10:30 am – 3:30 pm – 1 bottle
5 pm – 7:30 pm – ½ bottle

As you can see, I did not drink that much water today and most times when I start my cleanse I do a dry fast – no food or water – for a day or longer (again, I don’t recommend you do this, if you have never done so and only under supervision). I found that I was satisfied with the amount I drank and did not feel hungry at all (I also have a very strong mind and willpower to “stick” with what I plan on doing.

Day 2- Friday February 24. 2012

Today, I started my consumption of water somewhat earlier and desired more. For me, it is more about the farther I get away from the last food I consumed (which was Wednesday evening, February 22nd), the more I need something (in this case, the water), to “fill in” for my lack of food. I still felt OK with no issues in my head (i.e. some people develop a headache when they stop eating food, especially in the first few days, as the body and mind need to create a syncronicity of adapting to life without food). When I drank my filtered water to start, I did still have some “heady” issues, so to speak, so this is definitely a positive result. I believe it is due to the naturally occurring minerals which keep the body more alkaline and able to compensate well for the lack of nourishment in the form of food.

I did not go out for a walk today because it was mostly cloudy. I did clean my apartment – dusting and floors.

Consumption for the day: Total – 64.1 oz (8 cups)
9:45 am – 11:10 am – ½ bottle
11:40 am – 2 pm – 1 bottle
2:30 pm – 5:40 pm – 1 bottle

Day 3- Saturday February 25, 2012

Today, I started drinking the water at the same time as yesterday, but was feeling more sluggish/lethargic I therefore did best for myself by consuming more water. Again, I had no headache or felt the need/desire to eat any food (I still have lots of fruit in my fridge for consumption after I complete this cleanse, but it is not tempting to me at all and again, I do have strong(er) will power then most!). Since, my energy was lower today, I did rest/nap some in the afternoon (important to listen to your body signals and adjust accordingly) and that helped, too.

I went for a walk today, but was shorter then usual because there was a cool wind blowing and I felt chilly (this happens, especially when you are not doing exercise that raises your heart rate)

Consumption for the day: Total – 76.4 oz (~9 ½ cups)
9:45 am – 12 pm – 1 bottle
12:30 pm – 4:30 pm – 1 bottle
6 pm – 9 pm – 1 bottle
As you can notice yourselves, there was an increase from the first day to the third day of this fast. I felt like I hydrated my body very well and don’t believe it would likely be such with my filtered water (I would also have to add stevia, which has minerals when I drink it because I don’t care for the taste that much). Years ago, I did a 3 week cleanse, in which the first week was drinking water only with nothing in it and I did it. I honestly do not think I could do that again. With this mineralized water, I know I can! In the future, I may even try a longer water only fast since this works much better for me.

The next phase of this cleanse will be another 3 days on water only from another source. It is pure and in its pristine state with a pH of 8.76. It will be very interesting to see if I feel any differences in my body compared to the 7.24 pH water I have been drinking thus far.

This is a great ‘old wives tale,’ and is false. I don’t know who the first person was to say this, but it seemed to get passed down from one to the next and was accepted as truth/fact. The fill-in the blank is, ‘a fever.’ I would change the entire statement and say, “Feed neither a cold nor a fever.” The reason being, the best way for the body to heal is to not put anything in your body. If you have ever been out camping or hiking in the woods/mountains and ever saw an animal who is sick, they do not eat any food at all and they rest to allow their body to heal naturally. Why are humans any different? We are supposed to be more intelligent, but when it comes to health, I beg to differ. We have come so far in many areas of life, but not when it comes to taking care of our own bodies. No pill, potion, vitamin, supplement, drug, etc will cure/heal you. YOU HEAL YOU! How is this so? By getting out-of-the-way and letting it happen. This means to not bombard the body with things that only make it more difficult. The best thing to do is fast. Fasting means to not eat or drink anything at all (dry fasting). Not everyone can do this because they are not used to the process of giving the body a complete rest to rejuvenate and heal (Please note: if you are new to fasting, do not embark on any long-term regimen without proper supervision from a health practitioner or healing center that can guide you step by step and help you work through many challenges that come up for you. Also, please check with your health care provider if you have any preexisting condition where fasting may not be recommended, even though, I would personally say that it would be helpful in any condition/dis-ease you are dealing with). There are centers you can go to for cleansing and some do long-term water fasts, juice fasting and/or blended foods as a means for detoxification. There are benefits to all of these methods because you do not have to go through the process of digesting like you would when you eat a ‘regular’ meal. Our bodies do not heal when we eat, they actually do so when we are sleeping and our stomach is empty. If we have to work and use up energy to process the food while are asleep our internal mechanisms do not get a chance for true rest and rejuvenation. Keep in mind to not eat a heavy meal right before going to sleep. If you are hungry have something light, such as fruit, as it only takes 20 minutes to digest since its simple sugar (not to be confused with processed sugars from various packaged cookies, cakes, etc). Take charge of your life, as it is the only one you have. Doctors do not have the answers so please do your own research to have optimal health. You can get a diagnosis, if you need one and then go about finding the best way to achieve the results you want. Whether you choose chinese medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic care, homeopathy, naturopathy, macrobiotics, vegan or raw vegan lifestyle fruitarianism, Ayurvedic medicine, etc. I raise my glass of coconut water in a toast to all people of the world in wishing you the best in life, in health and happiness!
