Still eatings lots of Puffed Corn and I am having small amounts of products with salt and oil, but not to excess. The items with oil are from the food demos I do, so I am not personally purchasing anything with oil in it. My future plan is to try and keep the consumption of products with salt and oil to very minimal amount overall in my daily consumption. As for sugar, I do not consume any products with cane sugar and very minimal with maple syrup, as use mostly coconut crystals/nectar and stevia.

It was an accomplishment to not eat anything at all with oil, salt, sugar and overt fats for 31 days and honestly, when I started, did not know if I will be able to see it through to the end, as I had products around that fell into those categories and could have “caved in,” at any moment, but wanted to stay true to myself, stay strong with my conviction and know I could do it. I did not have anyone around to motivate me, but myself, so have to self-motivate, self-support and find other things could snack on when got hungry that stayed in line with the program was adhering to.

If anyone decides to embark on a change in their life of any kind, it is good to have other around to motivate/support you and definitely seek advise from a medical professional if this is related to your health and have a pre-existing condition because as much as it would be great to just stop taking a medication, etc there can be a more deleterious/negative affect on the body by doing so. As the saying goes, “slow and steady wins the race,” and in this case it would definitely be so. One thing (of many) I was blessed with in life by G-d, is the ability to persevere and align my mind to do something and stick with it, like I have done previously with various types of fasts and cleansing regimens that have documented on this blog.

Not that much to share this week. I continue to eats lots of Puffed Corn & Kamut Puffs, as was eating during the 1st month. I did have a cracker product that had oil in it, that used in my food demos. I did not get a bad reaction, but only had a small amount of crackers. For the most part am staying away from oils, except for those and do not have often. I guess it really is hard to break habits, even though was very strict about it last month. I have had some crackers with salt in them, too.

I will continue sharing for 1 additional week.

Sorry for the delay in posting this, but was not able to log into my account for a number of days and was in contact with wordpress and they were not able to help me and today on its own, I was able to log in. 😊

Nothing has changed since last week, except, I am staying away from oil in products that had in some crackers last week and do not use consume any oils in my own food preparation. I have had products with salt in them and maybe more then I ought to, but do not see anything different in me physically and since have not taken any blood tests before, during or after, is hard to say for sure, although those numbers are not necessarily relevant to me as a long term whole food vegan, as they are standardized for the general population who is not eating the way I do. I am consuming snacks with coconut sugar and maple syrup, but not in large quantities. I will post again in a week and let you know if anything changes.

June 1/19 – 1st day on modified S.O.S. Free Plan

What a difference a day makes. I started eating overt fats and feel like my meals are more satisfying and not eating as much grains, puffed cereals and rice cakes. I am not eat large quantities, but just small amount to my meals/snacks, like a handful of nuts and/or seeds, a spoon or 2 of coconut butter from Artisana on my stew/pasta, or a sprinkling of seeds on my salad. I also had some products with minimal amount of salt in them, vegan yogurt from Lavva, crackers from Mary’s Gone Crackers, corn thins from Real Food and granola from Go Raw. I do not feel any better/worse by eating them and perhaps it is because not overloading on them in my daily consumption.

June 4/19 – 4th day on modified S.O.S. Free Plan

I have been doing good with not using sugar, besides what mentioned previously and also not consuming any oil or products with oils in them, like snacks, etc. I have been consuming a bit more salt then I planned in the way of their inclusion in crackers I like to eat, but I don’t sprinkle it on my food. I do not see/feel any effects from it and do not have things with such a high percentage of salt like is seen in many packaged products and I do read the nutritional labels on everything I buy very thoroughly.

June 5/19 – 5th day on modified S.O.S. Free Plan

Today I did a couple of food demos at a health food store and after I was done was very tired and hungry and ate too many flax crackers and was quite a bit of salt and also tried some quinoa crackers that had oil in it, which was planning to avoid and had done so for 35 days and only had 4 small size ones and later on my head was not right and also the taste of it kept coming up in my mouth. I am not sure if all this was a combination of both crackers or just the ones with oil. Even with the small amount I ate, it affected me and that is likely because have not had oil in any products for over a month. I learned my lesson and will stay away from products with oil in them.

June 7/19 – 7th day on modified S.O.S. Free Plan

As you can see, am not writing every day, as before, only when there is something I think significant to share. I am still eating lots of Puffed Corn, even though added fats back to my plan, as I like to snack on them. I do like having more variety and options especially with eating nuts and seeds on a regular basis and also some products like to have for snacks that have them in there, like Kind Pressd Bars that are made with fruit and chia seeds and is a yummy snack to have.

Today I did alot of walking and feeling the hunger later in the day and ate 2 servings of rice, 2 servings of oatmeal and salad. I am also feeling tired because was a warmer day and didn’t get enough sleep. I feel like I need more protein and iron, had some White Mulberries, mentioned previously, as per serving of 3 Tbsp. has 20% iron, 130% Vit. C, 8% calcium, 3g protein and contains polyphenols (like found in grapes & red wine), flavonoids, anthocyanims, alkaloids and resveratrol. Other then that, nothing else to report.

May 30/19 – 30th day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

Nothing new to report. I am looking forward to eating overt fats again, as feel it is time to add them back and also may be I am missing some nutrients the way have been eating. I do not know for sure because only a blood test would let me know, but even that is not 100 percent foolproof, because I do not eat the S.A.D. way of most of the population and the standardized results of their blood testing is geared towards them and not to a long time whole food vegan, like myself.

May 31/19 – 31st day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

I reached the 31st day successfully. It is the last day on this plan and will be starting a modified plan that will start tonight after sundown, which is The Sabbath. Here is information on that.

2nd Month: June 1 through June 30/19

I may not necessarily report daily, unless have something new to say, but more of a weekly summary update. I will continue now with a modified S.O.S. Free Plan, to reiterate what stated previously, I will be eating overt fats, only small amount of salt that are in products and sweeteners – stevia, coconut crystals/sugar or date sugar. I will leave out oils completely, which are not whole food anyway.

May 15/19 – 15th day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

Nothing new to report. Still sticking with the plan and not having any issues. Continue to eat lots of carbohydrates and seem more hungry then when ate fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, vegan yogurt. Will see how I feel after this month is over, as actually is 31 days total in May and was only going to go without overt fats for 30 days and 4 weeks, is actually only 28 days, but who is counting. When you go longer into a new eating plan or anything else you are doing that is different, it gets easier and also becomes the norm for you. It’ll be interesting to see if having fats again will make me feel more satiated overall and not need as much carbohydrates.

May 16/19 – 16th day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

Sticking with the plan and at this points it feels like the norm already, whereas when first started wasn’t sure how I would do, although I have done fasts & cleanses in the past and for the most part kept it up for the time period designated. It could also be that since I already planned to do this ahead of time, I was preparing my brain to accept this new way of eating, since I was leaving out what have been consuming for a long time, thinking that it was ok, but I know that salt, oil and sugar are not food and want to eat what is going to nourish my body in the most optimum way. I do hope I can stay this way for the long haul and only time will tell. I didn’t get any blood work done before started this, as don’t have a doctor or go to doctors, as a rule and know my blood can be sent into a lab, but opted not to, although it would have been nice to see a comparison of before & after, especially the 1st month of also not esting any overt fats, because that may have brought down my cholesterol, not that I was/am worried about it.

Nothing new to share today. Staying on the plan. Still consuming more carbohydrates then usual because not eating overt fats, which may be more satiating.

Today I bought some Corn Tortillas from Food For Life, to have something else to eat, as they are made with whole corn and not flour. I have not tried them yet, but will in the next few days. I also found these brown rice crackers, called Brown Rice Snaps from Edward & Sons that used to eat years ago and have no salt or oil and like having something crunchy to snack on. They are baked and made only of organic brown and white rice.

3 Weeks!! When did that happen?? Seems like yesterday was just starting this and now 3/4 of the way through and still going strong. Today, I snacked on alot of Puffed Corn because like it for the crunch and has no salt, oil, sugar. Other then that, still keeping to the plan with no problems.

This week, I will be sharing more about the other affects (mental, psychological, etc) of doing this and not focus on the food, as did in the first week, but may mention if there are any other foods that didn’t mention before.

May 8/19 – 8th day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

I was working today and the hungry feeling started later in the afternoon, but maybe is really mental/psychological and need to hydrate more. I will try that and see what happens. I am trying to stay strong, but almost broken down to have some crunchy and salty flax crackers, but I have to realize, I’m craving minerals and need to eat more natural sodium rich foods. I found this on website: livestrong.com – A cardoon, which is classified as a leafy vegetable, contains the highest sodium content of any raw vegetable, according to the USDA, with 303 milligrams in 1 cup of shredded cardoon. Raw celeriac, wax gourd, artichokes, beets, carrots, seaweed, turnips, beet greens, celery and chard contain 75 milligrams of sodium or more per serving. When cooked without salt, sweet potatoes, spinach and collards contain 75 milligrams of sodium or more per serving. It also said about fruits: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a mammy apple contains the most sodium per serving. One of these large round tropical fruits contains 127 milligrams of sodium. Guavas and passion fruit are the only other fruits in the raw form that contain 50 milligrams of sodium or more per serving. I do use seaweed powder on my grains and salads daily, which are mineral rich.

May 9/19 – 9th day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

I found some other snacks – Puffed Corn & Puffed Millet from Arrowhead Mills with nothing else in it. So was thinking to put the rice puffs, puffed corn and millet together in a bag, as a snack mix to have when I am on the go. I also got Tomato Paste with no salt added from 365 Everday Value (Whole Foods private label), so can use that to spread on my rice cakes or put on grain/pasta.

May 10/19 – 10th day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

I had some of the other puffed cereals bought yesterday for snacks, so will need to buy more and the tomato paste on rice cakes was really good and satisfying. I feel like I am already be in the flow of doing this and not have any issues, as have to snack more on carbohydrates, since not eating fats this month.

May 11/19 – 11th day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

Snacked alot today and not feeling the need for anything not eating (fats, oils, sugar & salt). I do not feel or notice any difference physically, as usually see any changes, first in the face, but maybe is too soon to see anything.

May 12/19 – 12th day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

Didn’t each much during the day, but more in the evening. I got Khorasan Wheat/Kamut Puffs from Nature’s Path. I usually do not eat anything with wheat in it except for the sprouted tortillas, but kamut is different then regular wheat. I liked the taste of it, as a snack and something to eat quickly with no preparation, like the other puffed cereals have. Nothing new to share about my experience.

May 13/19 – 13th day on The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™

Ate alot of carbs today – seem to be hungry all day – ate rice, rice cakes, rice and kamut puffs. Could also be, because was not working today which keeps my mind off eating.

Can’t believe it has been 2 weeks and still sticking with it 100%! Woo Woo! The power of self-control (I have a strong nature when it comes to that, if you have checked out other posts on the cleanses and fasts I have done in the past) and not feeling like I am missing anything, but do crave more carbohydrates/starches. One has to be very aware and more astute when looking at packaged products when trying to avoid added salt, sugar, oils and fats, as it is easy to miss, if you don’t read the ingredients. Whereas, if a product has naturally occuring of any of those mentioned, that is a different story, like sugar from fruit or sodium in celery, etc.

You may have heard of The S.O.S. Free Plan (and I don’t mean the distress signal) what about The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™?

You may have heard of The S.O.S. Free Plan (and I don’t mean the distress signal) what about The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™?

Maybe or maybe not, but the S.O.S. I am referring to is an adaptation of your vegan food plan that eliminates Salt, Oil and Sugar. I say this because I am a whole food vegan and in the S.A.D {Standard American Diet} world, I don’t believe they could care less about this, sad to say. It is used by True North Health Center in California and others.

I, myself, have done various cleanses and fasts that documented on my blog (including coconut water cleanses, water fasts and dry fasting) and now I am trying something different. I got an email last month from Frederic Patenaude and subscribe to his posts, as he always has interesting information to share, as well as the knowledge he has culled from many years in the natural foods world. I don’t necessarily need to go on a “diet” to lose weight and detest that word anyway, because connotes going on and off something and I ascribe to be on a program that is constant, consistent and for the long term, where get results and don’t yo-yo back and forth, as it’s harmful to the health.

So what I decided to do and coined a new term, is The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™
What is that? Similar to the S.O.S. program, but I added no overt fats to it. Dr. Doug Graham recommends, to eat minimal added fats, but I’m not saying this is good for everyone, although when you read the link to the article above there is a comment on the bottom about someone who has been eating very low fat for a long time and has had good results.

Frederic mentioned that the body needs 90 days to adapt, so I decides to try this for the next 3 months, but do it 1 day at a time and then progress from there. I do eat whole food plant based, but I have done more snacking (but everything is food based) in the last number of years and have gotten lax with not consuming oils when buy products, although do not use it for my own food preparation. Also, used packaged products with cane sugar, maple syrup, salt and would like to eliminate them from my food plan and get back to eating foods in their natural wholesome state and not buy packaged products or minimize them at best. There is 1 item that has a minimal amount of salt that will be consuming because I do eat Food for Life Ezekiel Sprouted Tortillas for The Sabbath and Holydays, as it is the best out there because is flourless and without added oil. Other then that will be keeping to this 100%, G-d willing. This means will have to add more volume of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans to make up for the things will not be consuming.

Here’s a list of what will not be eliminating:
1- Oils – since do not cook with it, means products that use it as an ingredient
2- Nut butters
3- Nuts and Seeds
4- Avocados
5- Vegan Yogurt – as all are made with nuts and usually added salt, as well
6- Salt
7- Sugar (except for stevia which is not a sugar and make also look to get yacon syrup or if can find yacon powder, as is not a sugar, but from a Peruvian root that happens to be sweet and is also a prebiotic)
8- Coconuts

I am not saying it is going to be easy, as my body has to “detox” off of those items and I may feel a lack of satisfaction in my daily consumption and also there is the mental, emotional and psychological brain chemical reactions to consider, as well. As I said above, will simply be adding more volume of the other foods and actually, when you look at the cost of buying organic produce it seems expensive, but really it is not, it’s what you buy that is packaged, canned, boxed, etc that costs more because the price gets “bumped up” or inflated from the time the company makes it till it comes to the store, as everyone wants a “piece of the action” to make a profit. I am also used to grabbing a quick nutrient dense snack at work of a whole food bar and all of them have something that will be eliminating, so will have to have other snacks instead.

What I plan to do is document my experiences during this time on my blog. I am not sure will have time to do it daily, but will do my best to share with you what happene on all levels: physical, mental, emotional and psychological.

Look forward to sharing with you, as I embark on this new adventure.
I also want to say, that I do not plan to eliminate overt fats completely for more then 90 days and may even return to some after 30 days, depending on how I am feeling. My goal is to try to stay free of all salt, sugar and oils for the long term.

15 Tips to Eliminate Salt by Frederic Patenaude

Today, I want to share with you some tips on how to achieve a “no-salt diet.”

But first, let’s clarify a few points about salt.

1) Salt is not an essential nutrient. Contrary to common belief, salt is not a necessary nutrient. Two components of salt are essential to health: sodium and chloride. Both are found in natural foods in the amounts that we need.

2) We don’t need more sodium than what’s in natural foods. Sodium requirements are so low compared to the average intake that even the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) could not even establish a minimum requirement. US guidelines for RDAs (Required Daily Amounts) states that “the minimum average requirement for adults … [is]… 115 mg of Sodium…per day. In consideration of the wide variation of patterns of physical activity and climate exposure, a safe minimum intake might be set at 500 mg/day.”

3) Sea salt is NOT any better. It is still mostly composed of sodium chloride and using it in any amount will cause an electrolyte imbalance in most people, damaging your health over time. The trace minerals found in tiny amounts in sea salt are better obtained from natural foods.

4) All the tribes who lived on a no-salt diet were found to be in much better health with no hypertension with aging. Some of them ate a diet high in meat, smoked or drank alcohol. On the other hand, tribes who also lived a similar lifestyle but used salt had a high incidence of hypertension.

5) Human beings evolved on a low-sodium diet. Therefore our kidneys are adapted to conserve sodium. Salt is NOT paleo! Most humans never had any access to salt up to relatively recently in history.

6) Exceptions to the rule don’t change the rule. The fact that some people might need to add salt to their diet due to rare health problems or the use of salt exceptional athletic circumstances does not invalidate the general point that our health would be better if the vast majority of people consumed less much salt.

7) 99.4% of the population consumes more than the 1500 mg. limit of sodium set by the American Heart Association. So the argument that “many people run into health problems by not consuming enough salt” does not hold water.

8) Optimal blood pressure is under 115/75. Any improvement you can make in your blood pressure numbers will vastly improve your health outcomes!

9) Even if you consume salt and have an optimal blood pressure of under 115/75, it does not mean that you should keep consuming salt. 95-99% of people develop essential hypertension if they eat salt, as long as they live long enough. Some people develop it at 35, while others at 85.

10) Salt consumption destroys your health in other ways. It causes kidney damage, increases your odds of stomach cancer and kidney stones as well as auto-immune disease. It may cause acne and aggravate insomnia. It creates oxidative stress.

Dr. James Kenney, Ph.D., writes in “Diet, Hypertension and Salt Toxicity”:

There is growing evidence that HTN is merely a symptom of an underlying nutritional imbalance caused largely by an excessive intake of salt. Salt intake was found to correlate more closely with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), cerebrovascular disease, microproteinuria (an early sign of kidney disease), and reduced arterial compliance than BP. A recent review found that “there is clinical and experimental evidence… that salt intake directly affects hypertensive renal disease, cerebrovascular disease, and compliance of the large arteries. The close and partially independent correlation between salt intake and hypertensive target organ disease suggests dietary sodium to be a direct perpetrator of cardiovascular disease.”85 Simply put HTN is just one of many symptoms that can result from the damaging effects of chronic salt toxicity.

Are you ready to take the no-salt pledge? Here’s how to do it:

1- Stop eating foods that don’t taste good without salt

One of the best things about eliminating salt from your diet is that it will steer you in the right direction of eating. Fruits taste great without salt. It’s also not difficult to make a tasty salad without the stuff. Tubers (potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc.), as well as vegetables in general, are great without it. Unprocessed grains and beans can be pretty good given the right mixture. Nuts, seeds, and avocado: excellent.

As for pasta and bread: unpalatable even with the right combo of spices. But it’s so processed anyway so why it eat?

Processed foods: they all have to go because they are loaded with salt. The same applies to restaurant foods. At the same time, you’ll eliminate 75% of the foods that make people sick.

2- Read ALL the labels

It’s surprising where you can find salt and high sodium content. My mom was fooled by “Bragg’s Liquid Aminos” because there’s “no salt added.” It packs in as much sodium as soy sauce! Salt is often sometimes added to nut butter and other healthy foods even by organic companies. It’s also almost impossible to find a protein powder without added salt. Those in the market for a good protein powder should take a look at “Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein.” It’s one of the rare brands without added salt.

3- Be patient

Depending on a few factors, it takes a few weeks to neuro-adapt to a low-sodium diet. When this happens, you’ll sometimes pinch yourself thinking that you’ve added salt to your food, because you finally start tasting the natural sodium in it!

4- Use lime or lemon juice on everything

The receptors for “salty” and “sour” on the tongue are very close to each other. One trick to make the food taste “salty” is to add some fresh lime or lemon juice to almost everything you eat!

5- Learn to use whole spices

So you’re going to leave salt behind. How do you pack more flavor into your dishes? The solution is to use high-quality, whole spice mixes! You need to grind spices before each use for maximum flavor. Do not buy those pre-made, ground spice mix. They only taste good with salt!

6- Use fresh herbs

Always have one or two bunches of fresh herbs on hand. I particularly like Italian parsley (leaves are flat), cilantro and basil.

7- Know about this “salty” seasoning

Potassium chloride is bitter and unappealing. But you can get a salt-replacement to get over the hump of neuro-adaptation called “Table Tasty Salt Substitute.”

It’s the “saltiest” salt replacement I have found. Some might object to the yeast extract. However it’s a good company, I haven’t seen any negative use from occasional use, and it’s a great tool in the box to have to get over the salt habit.

8- Add mangoes!

When you remove salt, you sometimes have to add a bit of sweetness. Otherwise, some dishes, such as salads, can taste too bland. Diced mangoes will be your friend! You can almost add them to everything, but I particularly like them in salads.

9- Make avocados your friend

Avocados pack a lot of flavor and nutrition. You can add diced or mashed avocado to many dishes to instantly transform them from “okay” to “wow!”

10- Enjoy balsamic vinegar

Go and get some gourmet balsamic vinegar. A few drops do change everything! I don’t particularly like the fruit vinegars that are recommended by some health experts. Balsamic is the time-tested classic.

11- Use nutritional yeast

Nutritional yeast can also add a lot of flavor to some dishes.

12- Get your favorite condiments without salt

It’s amazing what you can find on Amazon. I could not find mustard or hot sauce without salt anywhere until I looked on Amazon. Here are a few good finds:

Organic Mustard.
Tomato Sauce.
No-BPA beans (You can find this brand in most health food stores, but if you live in the US, it’s a good buy on Amazon)
Hot Sauce.

13- Do many of the above, at the same time

Food will taste great if you combine my tips all at the same time. Make a salad and add mangoes, diced avocado, balsamic vinegar, fresh herbs, nutritional yeast and a bit of spice and I guarantee that you won’t miss the salt! The same goes for other dishes. Cook a lentil stews, add in freshly ground spices such as the Berberé Mix from “Épices de Cru,” lime juice and chopped cilantro and you’ll call me to say it was the best meal you’ve had in a while!

14- Go all the way

“Reducing salt” does not work. Health agencies have been encouraging the public to “reduce salt” for decades, and it has not worked. When you eat salt, you crave salt. It’s as simple as that. When you get rid of it entirely, your taste buds adapt, and you reap the rewards.

Any drop in blood pressure results in improved health until you’re down to at 115/75 and perhaps even 110/70. This is well documented scientifically.

Author Andrew Perlot, who has an excellent YouTube channel, did an experiment where he added only one-quarter of a teaspoon of salt to his diet for a year. He documented the results in his video.

What’s interesting about Andrew’s experiment is that he was still below the lowest recommended intake of 1500 mg. of sodium a day. Like I’ve said before, only 0.6% of the population eats that little sodium.

Just by adding about 500 mg. of extra sodium a day, he significantly raised his blood pressure.

15- Be Patient (Again)

One problem with a lot of the research done on sodium restriction is that they focus only on the short-term effect of going from a high-salt intake to a moderate salt intake.

According to Dr. James Kenney, Ph. D., author of a fascinating paper or salt toxicity:

Unfortunately, the long-term effects of a low-salt diet have received little attention. After an initial drop in BP, which can be fairly large in some individuals, the decline in BP often continues for many months or years, provided the salt restriction is maintained. For example, one group of researchers found that BP was still trending downwards after two years on a diet with about 70 mEq (1600 mg of sodium).84 Given that the BP raising effects of excessive dietary salt take many years to develop it is surprising that most clinicians expect to see the full impact of a low-salt diet within just a few weeks. In my clinical experience, it may take as long as 5 to 7 years to see the full BP lowering impact of a low-salt diet.
