How to Do a One-Day Water Fast by Frederic Patenaude

When I fast, I don’t drink any juice. I find fasting easier that way, and I believe that juice fasting maintains hunger without leading to as many benefits.

I also never fast on a “schedule.” Even though last year I fasted every week for 36 hours for several months in a row, I stopped after doing enough of it. Always listen to your body when fasting. (But the trick is knowing how to listen!)

I also don’t practice such as eating only 500 calories for one day, such as in the 5:2 Diet. It’s easier to fast drinking only water. That way there is nothing to organize, nothing to think about, and you stop the fast whenever you are ready.

The Benefits of a 24 to 36 Hour Fast

A short fast is not true fasting because the body never fully enters into ketone metabolism, where it burns body fat exclusively for energy. So it’s more a “digestive rest.” But it offers quite a few benefits:

Reduced blood lipids (decreased triglycerides and LDL cholesterol)
Lower body fat
Reduced blood pressure
Reduced chronic inflammation (CRP, IL-6, TNF, BDNF, and more)
Reduced oxidative stress
Reduced cancer risk
Increased fat burning
Improved appetite control
Increased insulin sensitivity and decreased insulin levels
Improved cardiovascular function
Improved memory and cognitive function
My main reason for fasting fast is because it makes me feel good!

It’s the best way I found to reset real hunger and appetite, uplift mood and get some rest.

And even though fasting is never without some efforts, I have enough experience with it to slip into a 36 hour fast comfortably. Let me give you some tips.

The Easiest Way to Approach a Fast

First, you have to understand that you’ve conditioned your body to eat at certain times. If you feel hungry in the morning, that is not real hunger but rather conditioning. Your body is used to request food whether it’s truly hungry or not.

When you fast for 24 to 26 hours, your body uses its immediate reserves: food still being digested, glycogen in the muscles and liver. It might partly shift to ketone bodies as an energy source but not 100%.

So the first approach to fasting for a day is understanding that you’re not fasting. You’re only delaying your first meal of the day!

How Are You Feeling Now?

The most important piece of advice I can give you about fasting is that you should mentally “chunk it” into blocks of time of one or a few hours.

When you start your fast, you might be thinking to yourself, “Wow, this is difficult. I don’t think I’ll be able to make it.”

What you have to realize, and this comes with practice, is that whatever you’re feeling right now is temporary. The feelings will pass.

My goal when I fast for 24 to 36 hours is to reach the “euphoria” part of the fast when fasting becomes easy. This feeling usually occurs after 4 p.m. After that, fasting is a breeze. In fact, fasting is easy for MOST of the time when doing such a long fast. But it can be difficult some of the time. Here’s how to go about it.

Going to Bed

You can choose to eat a very light dinner or not, eat it early or eat it late. I say do whatever you normally do. Going to bed is the first part of the fast. It’s easy because we fast every night when we sleep!

Fasting Until Noon

The next chunk of the fast is fasting until noon — thereby skipping breakfast. Many people do this all the time, so it’s not that hard. If you regularly drink coffee, I say drink some then or drink some green tea. It’s not worth it going through a fast AND have to detox caffeine at the same time. But switching to green tea is a good idea.

Getting Over the Afternoon Crash

The most difficult part of a 1-day fast is the afternoon. You’ll feel good until right around 1 p.m. or when you start to feel genuine hunger. That’s when you’re starting to think that you won’t last until the end of the day.

If you continue, you might start to feel tired in the afternoon, which coincides with circadian rhythms.

I like to consider this fatigue as “rest.” That’s why I prefer to fast on a Sunday. I will nap at that time and get the most wonderful rest.

Whenever I feel like breaking the fast during that period, I tell myself, “Try another hour and decide then.” I know that whatever I’m feeling at the moment will pass.

The Evening High

This is when the fast becomes fun and exciting. The endorphins kick in, and you feel great. Your mood is positive, and it’s then no problem to continue the fast or break it.

You can decide to break the fast for a 24 hour fast.

Or you can choose to go to bed “hungry.” Listen to your body. I usually find that I feel good enough to go to sleep on an empty stomach and fast until the next day. But sometimes I want to eat and break the fast, so I do it.

Sleeping On An Empty Stomach

It’s not that difficult to fast through the night if you put your mind to it. For many people sleep is a bit lighter and for some deeper. I experience deeper sleep on the first days of the fast, so I do enjoy this night! Your energy should be good the next day because fasters don’t require as much sleep.

People who sleep well tend to sleep less during a fast and those who have sleep problems tend to sleep better.

If you wake up in the middle of the night and are genuinely hungry, then break the fast then with some fruit and go back to bed. Otherwise, you can fast until the morning.

The Morning

It’s surprising that most mornings, after fasting for over 32-36 hours, I am rarely hungry. I often have to decide to break the fast because I often feel like I could go on. Sometimes I do go on and wait for hunger to come back, which can take many hours and take me to a 40 or even 48 hour fast.

But if you have important work to do that day, break the fast no matter how hungry you are.

Breaking the Fast

Breaking a short fast is not something that requires a lot of planning. A longer fast weakens your digestion, so re-feeding becomes the most critical aspect of the fast.

I suggest that you eat whole fruit. It will taste amazing! And your energy will quickly come back.

Then act as if the fast never happened. Continue with your day but listen to your body. You may be hungrier than usual or not. Just follow your hunger and don’t question it. Try to eat as healthy as you can, and hopefully healthier than you did before the fast.

After a fast, you might recalibrate your taste buds enough to make a few changes, such as drinking less caffeine, switching to tea, quitting tea, eating more raw food, eating less salt, going vegan, going raw, etc. You’ll be more in tune with what your body needs!

A few people cannot fast for even just 24 hours. People with diabetes fall into that category. Your doctor can advise you.

Winter is Coming – How to Beat the Winter Blues by Frederic Patenaude

Don’t be caught off-guard this time. Have you started the most obvious cure for the winter blues there is?

At this time of the year in Northern latitudes, the days are shortening by three minutes a day. But even in Los Angeles the days are shortening by two minutes a day.

When November comes, many people are deep into the “winter blues” without realizing what happened. I’m talking about seasonal affective disorder or SAD.

By December, things get pretty dire rather quickly, with sunset before 5 p.m and days getting even shorter every day.

A slight bout of winter blues means that you’ll feel less energetic, have trouble getting up or staying asleep, and feel not as zesty as usual. Other warning signs include getting up too early and having trouble falling asleep.

If you don’t do anything about it, these symptoms can turn into a full-blown depression.

So let me share with you what to do about it. Because starting the cure early is key!

1) Light Therapy
This simple treatment is your first line of defense. It works! But the key thing is starting early (in September, but now will work if you haven’t started yet), and to do it every day for 30-60 minutes.

I’ve been blasting my eyes with light in the morning since early September, and I will keep this up every single day of the winter, even while traveling. I already feel the benefits compared to years when I didn’t do it.

If you think you tend to have any symptoms of SAD, even slight ones, I highly recommend that you give this a try. But make sure that you:

1) Don’t skimp on quality. Get a good light. After researching this extensively, I decided to purchase the Day-Light Sky Lamp. I’ve been very happy with this lamp, and I also use it on the low setting as a regular source of light.

2) Also get a travel lamp. You don’t want to stop the light therapy when you’re traveling — even if you’re going South. Light therapy only works if you’re doing it every day, and you never know how much sunshine you’re going to get on vacation. Plus, the travel light is very useful for overcoming jet lag by resetting your inner clock to the new time zone. I use it all the time. I recommend this lamp: Brand name- Sphere

The easiest way to use Light Therapy is to do it first thing in the morning while having breakfast, reading your emails, reading the newspaper, having tea or coffee or a smoothie. You have to be fairly close to the light without looking at it.

Two Other Ways to Beat the Winter Blues
Here are two more ways to help you beat the winter blues. But you’ll never hear them discussed in the media. These methods work even faster, and the results are more permanent! Note: you must do this in addition to light therapy.

1) Fasting

Fasting (on water) stimulates the production of natural endorphins. At the end of a day of fasting, you naturally feel more alive, energetic, and more importantly: mood significantly improves.

In the winter, I fast one day per week for 20 to 36 hours.

Also, I think our bodies are naturally designed to get fewer calories in the winter, because this has been a time of semi-starvation, in our long evolution as a species.

During the winter, our bodies go through several physiological changes. That is why many people gain weight and feel less energetic.From an evolutionary perspective, it makes sense because it helped us in the past conserve energy.

The problem in our modern world is that “winter never comes.” We experience the cold, but not the starvation. So we pack on the pounds and feel depressed.

One way to overcome this is to fast one day per week. That way, your body will think that “winter is coming” and will react appropriately. Your mood will significantly improve, and you’ll avoid the fat gain that most experience during the winter.

(Note that some people shouldn’t fast, due to health concerns. In this case, you can try a day of eating fruit, smoothies, or juices).

2) A High-Raw Diet

A high-raw diet is a great tool to improve mood and energy levels. Most people think of doing this during the summer, but the winter is a great time to eat more raw!

Again, this refers to the “winter hypothesis.”

A raw diet is naturally less caloric dense but contains more nutrients.

Your body will react by burning fat and producing endorphins — feel-good hormones.

You don’t even have to eat 100% raw to experience the results. Just 50 to 80% raw will do it!

When you combine light therapy, fasting and a raw diet, you have a powerful combo to ward off winter blues or even depression.

For the twenty-eighth interview, an exclusive, I have the immense pleasure of introducing you to Tonya Zavasta: Raw Food & Natural Beauty Advocate and Anti-Aging Expert, in business since 2002-2003.

Question #1: Tell me briefly about yourself and why you decided to get involved in the “health” industry?

I don’t think I ever made a decision, as such. Early on, it was simply about resolving my own issues. I was then facing some pretty heavy-duty surgery to fix congenital hip problems. I stumbled upon the raw foods message through the Paul Bragg’s book, Miracle of Fasting. And I knew this was the way for me—no looking back. The results astounded me. My health issues went away. My looks improved dramatically. I just couldn’t keep my discoveries for myself. I had to share my “secrets” of health and beauty with the world. That’s how I came to write my first book, Your Right to be Beautiful: The Miracle of Raw Foods.. I started a raw foods group in Memphis which I was leading for three years. Invitations to speak began coming in. Before I knew it, I was traveling with lectures and spreading the raw food message.

Question #2: What one message do you want to share with the people of this world that is crucial for their ultimate well-being and longevity?

Big question! Surely you’ll let me have two answers, won’t you?

First…It simply doesn’t work to cajole, beg, nag, or manipulate others to eat better and exercise. The best thing you can do for others—take care of your own health and happiness.

Be an example, an inspiration. Reflect others’ own goodness back to them. Show them, in yourself, what they can achieve with what they already have.

Second, quantum physics implies we create our own reality via our own thoughts, expectations, and beliefs. So it’s important to spread the message of longevity, youthfulness, and superb health. You can’t singlehandedly win the day—you need others to believe with you.

Another starling implication of quantum mechanics is that separability (between things, people…) is an illusion. So… we’re all connected. And what happens to each of us affects the rest of us. We rise and fall, fail and succeed, together. So you cannot be prosperous without wishing prosperity for others, you cannot be healthy without sharing the secrets of well-being with others, and you cannot get love without giving love to others.

Questions #3: If someone could afford to purchase only one product at this moment to start their journey towards better health (food or health-related), what would you recommend and why?

When I embarked on my 100% raw journey, I had high expectations. I daresay my health expectations were fulfilled in even greater degree than I expected. But beauty-wise, perhaps only 80%.

Eating predominantly (or exclusively) raw foods is very beneficial for your looks. But it’s not enough. That is the reason for my beauty products.

We need to take care of our skin externally. A daily beauty routine will make a big difference in how youthful your skin will look. My brush is probably the most important product you’d need. Why? Because exfoliation is a vital key to beautiful skin.

If I have a “beauty secret,” this is probably it…While most beauty mavens talk endlessly about being super gentle with your skin, my approach is dimetrically different. You need to train your skin to endure, to withstand aging. More in my ebook: Guide to an Ageless Face

Question #4: Tell me more about your business/company and/or products you offer to the public to help them achieve optimal health and well-being?

If you trace my company’s growth, you’ll see each product was initially developed because I, personally had a need for it. I offer for sale only what I use personally. Whomever you buy from, wouldn’t you want them to hold the same value?

When I couldn’t find a brush of just the right firmness to use on myself, I designed one. When you change your diet, your hair starts to change, too. You begin to shed more hair than usual. This is exactly what happened to me. Looking how to combat this issue, I developed a Scalp Tonic to improve hair growth, using the best known herbs for scalp stimulation.

When after age 50 I realized I needed to add a night cream to my beauty routine, I developed one from 100% natural oils, but with a creamy consistency. The physical world we live in is polarized. There can never be a plus without a minus. Never an up without down, an inhale without an exhale. Nor can there be health without sickness.

We can’t so much as appreciate health without knowing sickness. How many of us got up today and said thanks, that for example, our appendix didn’t hurt?

Health and sickness will always be intertwined. We need them both for our souls’ experience. My best lessons have come from pain.

I can’t really feel, in a sense, for the whole planet. But I do care greatly for people who have come to my website and are ready to tackle some serious anti-aging practices. It’s they who are my highest priority.

Question #6: Who is your greatest hero and why?

I guess I’m expected to answer something like All my life, my hero has been…But I really don’t have any heroes, in that sense. Truth is, you can learn from every person’s life.

I like people who inspire me. For example, I once read that a person was dancing at age 84. I got inspired. I wanted to do something like that, too. It’s invaluable to have such people around you or to read about them. They expand for you the perceived limits of what’s possible. That’s important because you can’t set out to accomplish anything you don’t believe is possible. Once you believe something is possible, then there is no limit to what you can accomplish.

Question #7: Is there anything else you would like to share with the public?

Quantum mechanics is changing our views of reality…and our views on how we can control what happens in our own lives.

Tribulations and challenges conspire against us. Most of us run. But if instead we embrace those challenges, learn from them…we’ll arrive at something better, vastly, unbelievably better.

Question #8: I know that there are variables as to how much food/calories each person consumes when eating raw vegan food (based on many lifestyle factors, etc), but is there a basic guideline you would recommend for everyone?

It’s not possible to have one plan for all. There are infinitely many variables! Every person is unique. So, no, there is no one, sure-fire recommendation. Your own body is your best guide.

Very important: read, read and read about how other people achived what you want. But always remember: Health is highly individual. Learn to experiment on your own body. Listen to its feedback and make changes accordingly. Keep what works. Change what doesn’t.

Don’t mimic anyone else. Get your own experience. Only personal experience will get you to a succesful raw food lifestyle. Somebody else’s experience won’t ever have this power. If you experiment intelligently, and you believe strongly that your chosen diet will assures you health and long life, it will.

I changed the title, as the original was Wanted: the Western Diet and this seems more appropriate

I remember the first time I came across the word “SAD Diet” while reading a health book. I smiled when I discovered that it meant “Standard American Diet.” What a clever acronym, I thought!

Indeed, the American diet is a pretty “sad” story.

But as my thinking evolved, I realized that the SAD diet could be any modern diet that causes diseases of affluence.

If we think of the SAD diet as an American phenomenon, we might be tempted to think of another ethnic diet as infinitely better, for example, the Thai, Indian or Italian diet. Although, in their most traditional forms, these diets can be very healthy, we almost never encounter them as such anymore.

For example, I’ve never come across a Thai restaurant that served truly traditional Thai food as was common before 1950, which would have been very low in fat and simple.

Modern Thai, American, Indian, Chinese, Italian or French restaurants serve modern versions of their ethnic cuisine.

They all have one thing in common: they all serve WESTERN food.

Yes, even Asian food has been westernized and the qualification of “SAD” can apply to it.

Ok, so why does this matter?

It matters because Western diets come hand in hand with Western diseases.

A Western diet is not necessarily a diet of foods commonly found in America or Europe. It’s any diet that has any the following characteristics. The more items you can check on the list, the more “Westernized” the diet is.

Animal products (eggs, fish, meat, chicken, dairy, butter, etc.). Not used as condiments but rather as a centerpiece of the meal. In most traditional societies, including all the long-lived cultures of the world, animal products were scarce and used occasionally. A piece of meat that would feed one person for one meal in American would feed an entire family for a week in Asia countries.
Regular consumption of vegetable oils. Vegetable oils were scarce in the past and not used as much as they are today.

Regular consumption of processed flours and sugars. Processed sugars and flours were unknown in the past. Bread was coarse and tough to chew — not the fluffy thing we use for sandwiches today. White sugar did not exist.

Liquid calories. Includes alcohol, fruit juice, sodas, etc. In traditional diets, those just didn’t exist or were consumed sparingly.

Lots of sodium — Although Asian cuisine now contains a lot of sodium, it wasn’t always like that in the past. In general, very little salt is used in many traditional diets. In some cases, salt is unknown.
A Western diet is a RICH diet. It’s a diet full of foods that were previously considered delicacies in the past. It’s like eating cake every day instead of once a year on your birthday.

Examples of Rich Foods

Vegetable oil, mayonnaise, rich sauces, butter
Eggs
Full-fat dairy products
Meat
Wine, beer, spirits
Ice Cream
White bread, pastries, muffins, panini bread, croissants, etc.
Coconut cream/milk
Peanut butter
Cakes, chocolate

Traditional Diets, on the other hand, are based on foods of much lower caloric density, like sweet potatoes, rice, beans, vegetables, fruit, etc.

It’s pretty easy to tell when a population is eating a Western diet: you simply have to look at the diseases that are prevalent in that population, and you’ll know.

The following diseases are all caused by the Western diet:

Obesity
Cardiovascular disease
Hypertension
Type 2 and type 1 diabetes
Osteoporosis
Colorectal, prostate and breast cancers
Many auto-immune diseases
Alcoholism
Those diseases were impossible to find in populations that ate a very traditional and non-Western diet.

Cancer does occur in nature and even in some animals, so it’s not always caused by diet alone. But the rates of some cancers are so much higher in Western countries that we know that they are mostly caused by the Western diet and lifestyle.

Every Country Is Becoming Westernized

There was a time when we could compare different populations in the world and be stunned to find that some diseases that are so common in the West were impossible to find in other populations.

We’re now reaching a point where such comparisons are no longer possible or relevant because every country in the world is becoming westernized.

Okinawa once boasted the longest-lived populations in the world. Now 47% of Okinawan men aged 20-60 are considered overweight. Heart disease is rampant.

For thousands of years, the health worry in Asia was with infectious diseases, famine, and malnutrition. Now that prosperity has reached the Eastern shores, they can worry instead about heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

According to Time magazine, “80% of global CVD-related deaths now occur in low and middle-income nations which covers most countries in Asia.”

Anytime you see diseases of affluence popping up, you can be sure that the population is eating a Western diet. The two go hand-in-hand.

A particularity of a Western diet is the combination of two elements:

High-fat diet (30%+) that uses vegetable oils and animal foods at most meals
Refined carbohydrates in the 30+% range of total calories
Some people design diets that remove carbohydrates from the diet, therefore creating a “Western Diet Lite” – full of animal products and fat but without starches and sugar. This leads to health improvements and lower body weight.

A true non-Western diet that leads to health is based on plant foods and makes a limited use of rich foods. Also, it’s a total lifestyle where you’re active and don’t take in more calories than you burn.

Here are some easy ways to de-westernize your diet and eliminate your risk of dying or suffering from the most common modern diseases.

Skip breakfast. Intermittent fasting works and most people can benefit from it. Most traditional cultures ate only two meals a day rather than three. Unless you’re very active and need the calories, you’re probably not truly hungry for breakfast anyway and could benefit from a few extra hours of fasting. Intermittent fasting has been shown to increase longevity and improve health in many ways.

Base your diet on a few simple starches, such as rice, beans, potatoes or sweet potatoes. Add in fresh vegetables and fruit. This is the “Starch Solution” of Dr. McDougall. Add seasonings to taste. For example, lunch can be a big quinoa salad with cooked chickpeas, raw tomatoes, raw cucumbers, some chopped up herbs and onion, and a few slices of avocados. Dinner can be bean tacos with corn tortillas, black beans (whole or pureed) topped with fresh or canned salsa and hot sauce! A winner every time. Use nuts, seeds and avocados according to your energy needs.

For faster healing and fat loss, try a raw or high-raw diet. Replace one or more cooked meal with a raw meal, but make sure you eat enough fruit to get the calories you need.

Eliminate oils from your diet or use them only on occasion and extremely sparingly.

If you stray off the diet, make it a rare occasion, like traditional societies did in the past. They would slaughter a pig for a big feast, but not eat meat every day of the year. Eat cake for your birthday if you’d like, but don’t make it an every day or even an every-week thing!

Don’t consume any liquid calories except on special occasion.

Don’t cook with salt and don’t eat processed foods. Watch out for restaurant food. If desired, add salt to the surface of food after cooking. That’s where you can taste it the most. Doing this will keep you well under the upper limits for sodium consumption.

Diet and nutrition can be confusing, and journalists love to confuse the public with big headlines and studies of dubious value. One week, coffee is thought to be healthy and the next week, we learn that it can raise cholesterol levels. The average person will think “why bother if they can’t make up their mind? I’ll just eat whatever I want.”

In reality, nutrition is simple.

Don’t eat a Western diet and you’ll avoid Western diseases of affluence.

Eat whole plant foods (starches or fruit) as the main source of your calories. Eat vegetables. Don’t eat rich foods except on special occasions. That’s it! Add a form of exercise that you like and can incorporate into your life.

Doing that alone will save you from 75% of the diseases most people end up dying from in our world and will add at least ten good years to your life!

Last week, I got sick with a pretty nasty bug! Thankfully, I managed to recover very quickly using a counterintuitive method I’ll talk about in a moment.

I found that following a high-raw, plant-based diet has improved my immunity. I rarely get sick with the cold or flu. I also work from home and don’t get exposed to the big melting pot of viruses being passed along in offices.

But last week, I got hit hard!

It all started when I picked up a friend from the airport, who had just spent two months in Morocco. She was coughing her lungs out for hours during the car ride but told me it was because of exposure to second-hand smoke during her trip. Well… I should have known better.

The very next day, I started getting the typical symptoms of a pretty nasty cold: a sore throat, headache, slightly elevated body temperature, fatigue.

Under normal circumstances, I would have stayed home and rested.

But it turned out that next day was December 24th, and I had, of course, a big Christmas Eve dinner and party with my family. So I stayed up late, which made my symptoms worse.

So I decided to put my healing into high gear. Without going into all the details, I fasted through the night for 36 hours on water only.

And then I was fully back in action the next day, feeling better than ever.

I’m glad I didn’t listen to the standard advice to “Starve a fever and feed a cold.”

Most people drag colds for at least 7 to 10 days. I think that’s because they’re not taking the time to rest and let their body heal.

Fasting helps the body direct its energies on healing rather than digestion.

What’s the best way to get rid of a cold quickly?

So many remedies exist… from rum mixed with honey to oregano oil and garlic.

But the best remedy is to give your body plenty of REST and if you can, fast for a day or two on water only. If you must, drink vegetable broth (no sodium) or vegetable juice, but no fruit or sugar.

An old saying goes like this “the untreated cold lasts seven days and the treated cold lasts a week.”

We always get better from a cold in SPITE of our remedies rather than because of them. Mostly, they work as psychological support more than anything else.

However, from personal experience, I remain convinced that water fasting accelerates healing vs. “feeding the cold.” An alternative to fasting would be to eat only vegetables.

Fasting is truly one of the best natural “cures.” That’s why I want to explore this topic fully next year.

Anyway, I’m glad to be back in action so quickly (thanks to the fast!) and next time you need a ride from the airport, make sure you’re not bringing a Moroccan virus with you! 😉

An Unusual Cure for Winter Blues by Frederic Patenaude

When November comes, I start feeling the “winter blues.”

Because I live in a Northern climate, I experience the short days in October, November and December.

By November, things get pretty dire rather quickly, with sunset before 5 p.m and days getting shorter every day.

November is also a rather rainy and gray month for the most part.

A slight bout of winter blues means that you’ll feel less energetic, have trouble getting up or staying asleep, and feel not as zesty as usual.

For many, this can turn into a full-blown depression — seasonal affective disorder (SAD), as it’s called.

The most commonly discussed way to prevent this is light therapy.

It works, as long as you start it pretty early (in September or even late August), and keep it up every single day for the entire winter.

You have to get a light designed for this — 10,000 Lux.

You have to be fairly close to the light, without looking at it. And you have to do it for 30 minutes, every single morning. Many do it while eating breakfast or reading.

This works… but it’s also a big commitment.

There are two lesser-known ways to beat the winter blues.

You’ll never hear them discussed in the media. But they work faster and the results are more permanent!

1) Fasting

Fasting (on water) stimulates the production of natural endorphins. At the end of a day of fasting, you naturally feel more alive, energetic, and more importantly: mood significantly improves.

In the winter, I fast one day per week for 24 to 36 hours. I find that this really works to avoid feeling the “winter blues.”

Also, I think our bodies are naturally designed to get fewer calories in the winter, because this has been a time of semi-starvation, in our long evolution as a species.

Our bodies go through several physiological changes before the winter: we gain weight, we feel less energy. This is good from an evolutionary perspective, because it helped us in the past conserve energy and last the winter.

But the problem in our modern world is that “winter never comes.” We experience the cold, but not the starvation. So we pack on the pounds and feel depressed.

One way to overcome is to fast one day per week. That way, your body will think that “winter is coming” and will react appropriately. Your mood will significantly improve and you’ll avoid the fat gain that most experience during the winter.

(Note that some people shouldn’t fast, due to health concerns).

2) A High-Raw Diet

A raw diet is an amazing tool to improve mood and energy levels. Most people think of doing this during the summer, but the winter is actually a great time to eat more raw!

Again, this comes down to this “winter hypothesis” I just talked about.

A raw diet is naturally less caloric dense, but contains more nutrients.

Your body will react react by burning fat and producing endorphins — feel-good hormones. This would technically encourage you to go out there and seek some rich food!

When you combine both fasting and a raw diet, you have a powerful combo to ward off winter blues or even depression.

You don’t even have to eat 100% raw to experience the results. Just 50 to 80% raw will do it!

And fasting isn’t necessary if you get closer to 100% raw.

What is detox?

That is a word you will hear a lot while you are here at Hippocrates. Unfortunately, it is no secret that we live on a polluted planet today. The air, the land, the water, and the food are contaminated by the 85,000+ chemicals we humans have created over the last 200 years for whatever reason. Here is a list of the ten most common toxic chemicals that permeate our environment:

The human body is perfectly capable of dealing with limited exposure to many of these toxins within a given time frame. Typically, these toxins are stored in fat cells but they may also be stored in your muscles, organs, and other tissues.

So, maybe it’s been a long time since some of you have eaten:

Each of these four protocols is extremely important in and of itself.
