Why Raw Foodists Have Bad Teeth by Frederic Patenaude
For years, I’ve been warning raw vegans, Paleo enthusiasts, juicing fans, fruit eaters, smoothie addicts and vegans to take care of their teeth.

What I have observed is:
* I high incidence of dental decay among raw foodists, 1-2 years after they switch to the diet

* A high incidence of gum recession and enamel erosion among raw foodists (this does not mean 100% raw. Anyone who eats a lot of fruit or drinks fresh juices or smoothies should care.)

Dramatic dental problems in people who stick religiously to certain diet principles without questioning them.
In my early days, I’ve had my share of dental problems myself as a direct result of following the raw diet incorrectly. I have also met at least several hundred people who have gone through similar issues.

I’ve been talking about this for a number of years now, and I’m glad that people are finally listening!

This is truly the “weak link” of the raw diet, and it applies to anyone eating a healthy diet!

There are a lot of positive aspects to eating more raw foods.

But… a person can experience many wonderful benefits while changing their diet, and watch with horror as their dental health goes downhill.

And it’s not just raw vegans… vegetarians also must watch out. In fact, anyone who eats healthier!
We know that raw foods contain more acidity. But healthy eaters also consume more cooked vegetables, and acidity can be increased in those vegetables when you roast them.

Peta Bee writes in the Daily Mail:

“Dentists at the University of Dundee found that different cooking methods could increase the acidity of vegetarian dishes, such as roasted vegetables. Exposure to high temperatures produced chemical changes that made the acid more concentrated, and more damaging to teeth. In particular, the acidity level of zucchini, peppers, onions and eggplants increased when roasted.”

So what’s going on here?

The Two Culprits

At this point, if you have the least interest in eating a healthier diet, you should start reading very, very closely.

Dental decay is not caused by eating the wrong diet.

Dental decay is the result of the proliferation of certain types of bacteria in the oral environment. The bacteria eliminate acid waste that eat into your teeth and cause decay.

It’s all about the terrain!

If your oral terrain (the environment) is healthy, you could eat Cheetos and drink Coke all day, and you wouldn’t even get cavities.

When people change their diet, they become a dental health time-bomb. Their bacteria count is a little too high, but not high enough to cause major problems.

Suddenly, they start eating more often, because they eat foods that are not as dense in calories. They drink juices. They drink smoothies. They eat a lot of fruit.

This acid and sugar create a giant feast for the bacteria which feed on them.

The real culprits are the bacteria. But the terrain is determined by:

– Acidity
– Sugar

It’s not all about the food you eat! If you can control the level of acidity in your mouth, you can eat foods that contain acids and sugar, and you’ll be fine.

But, if your oral terrain is not under control, you’ll never be able to eradicate dental problems for life.

You want your bacteria count to be as low as possible.

You want to avoid bacteria forming into colonies and creating their little civilization in your mouth!

If your oral environment is clean… and ALKALINE… it doesn’t matter if you eat dates or raisins all day.

The Only Solution

The only way to prevent dental decay for life and reverse a bad situation is to take active control of your oral environment. Just controlling your diet does not address the root of the problem.

You can create a simple, daily dental hygiene routine that will prevent 95% of problems.

And then, you can do simple things with your diet to control the remaining 5%, like avoiding snacking and being careful with the amount of acid foods you consume.

In it, is explained:

– Exactly what routine to follow to heal your teeth, if you’ve experienced any kind of dental problems.

– How to avoid the common dental problems associated with vegetarian, vegans, and raw food diets.

– Nutritional changes you can make that can save your teeth.

It’s the best resource found to avoid and reverse most dental issues.

unWanted: the Western S.A.D. Diet by Frederic Patenaude

unWanted: the Western S.A.D. Diet by Frederic Patenaude

I changed the title, as the original was Wanted: the Western Diet and this seems more appropriate

I remember the first time I came across the word “SAD Diet” while reading a health book. I smiled when I discovered that it meant “Standard American Diet.” What a clever acronym, I thought!

Indeed, the American diet is a pretty “sad” story.

But as my thinking evolved, I realized that the SAD diet could be any modern diet that causes diseases of affluence.

If we think of the SAD diet as an American phenomenon, we might be tempted to think of another ethnic diet as infinitely better, for example, the Thai, Indian or Italian diet. Although, in their most traditional forms, these diets can be very healthy, we almost never encounter them as such anymore.

For example, I’ve never come across a Thai restaurant that served truly traditional Thai food as was common before 1950, which would have been very low in fat and simple.

Modern Thai, American, Indian, Chinese, Italian or French restaurants serve modern versions of their ethnic cuisine.

They all have one thing in common: they all serve WESTERN food.

Yes, even Asian food has been westernized and the qualification of “SAD” can apply to it.

Ok, so why does this matter?

It matters because Western diets come hand in hand with Western diseases.

A Western diet is not necessarily a diet of foods commonly found in America or Europe. It’s any diet that has any the following characteristics. The more items you can check on the list, the more “Westernized” the diet is.

Animal products (eggs, fish, meat, chicken, dairy, butter, etc.). Not used as condiments but rather as a centerpiece of the meal. In most traditional societies, including all the long-lived cultures of the world, animal products were scarce and used occasionally. A piece of meat that would feed one person for one meal in American would feed an entire family for a week in Asia countries.
Regular consumption of vegetable oils. Vegetable oils were scarce in the past and not used as much as they are today.

Regular consumption of processed flours and sugars. Processed sugars and flours were unknown in the past. Bread was coarse and tough to chew — not the fluffy thing we use for sandwiches today. White sugar did not exist.

Liquid calories. Includes alcohol, fruit juice, sodas, etc. In traditional diets, those just didn’t exist or were consumed sparingly.

Lots of sodium — Although Asian cuisine now contains a lot of sodium, it wasn’t always like that in the past. In general, very little salt is used in many traditional diets. In some cases, salt is unknown.
A Western diet is a RICH diet. It’s a diet full of foods that were previously considered delicacies in the past. It’s like eating cake every day instead of once a year on your birthday.

Examples of Rich Foods

Vegetable oil, mayonnaise, rich sauces, butter
Eggs
Full-fat dairy products
Meat
Wine, beer, spirits
Ice Cream
White bread, pastries, muffins, panini bread, croissants, etc.
Coconut cream/milk
Peanut butter
Cakes, chocolate

Traditional Diets, on the other hand, are based on foods of much lower caloric density, like sweet potatoes, rice, beans, vegetables, fruit, etc.

It’s pretty easy to tell when a population is eating a Western diet: you simply have to look at the diseases that are prevalent in that population, and you’ll know.

The following diseases are all caused by the Western diet:

Obesity
Cardiovascular disease
Hypertension
Type 2 and type 1 diabetes
Osteoporosis
Colorectal, prostate and breast cancers
Many auto-immune diseases
Alcoholism
Those diseases were impossible to find in populations that ate a very traditional and non-Western diet.

Cancer does occur in nature and even in some animals, so it’s not always caused by diet alone. But the rates of some cancers are so much higher in Western countries that we know that they are mostly caused by the Western diet and lifestyle.

Every Country Is Becoming Westernized

There was a time when we could compare different populations in the world and be stunned to find that some diseases that are so common in the West were impossible to find in other populations.

We’re now reaching a point where such comparisons are no longer possible or relevant because every country in the world is becoming westernized.

Okinawa once boasted the longest-lived populations in the world. Now 47% of Okinawan men aged 20-60 are considered overweight. Heart disease is rampant.

For thousands of years, the health worry in Asia was with infectious diseases, famine, and malnutrition. Now that prosperity has reached the Eastern shores, they can worry instead about heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

According to Time magazine, “80% of global CVD-related deaths now occur in low and middle-income nations which covers most countries in Asia.”

Anytime you see diseases of affluence popping up, you can be sure that the population is eating a Western diet. The two go hand-in-hand.

A particularity of a Western diet is the combination of two elements:

High-fat diet (30%+) that uses vegetable oils and animal foods at most meals
Refined carbohydrates in the 30+% range of total calories
Some people design diets that remove carbohydrates from the diet, therefore creating a “Western Diet Lite” – full of animal products and fat but without starches and sugar. This leads to health improvements and lower body weight.

A true non-Western diet that leads to health is based on plant foods and makes a limited use of rich foods. Also, it’s a total lifestyle where you’re active and don’t take in more calories than you burn.

Here are some easy ways to de-westernize your diet and eliminate your risk of dying or suffering from the most common modern diseases.

Skip breakfast. Intermittent fasting works and most people can benefit from it. Most traditional cultures ate only two meals a day rather than three. Unless you’re very active and need the calories, you’re probably not truly hungry for breakfast anyway and could benefit from a few extra hours of fasting. Intermittent fasting has been shown to increase longevity and improve health in many ways.

Base your diet on a few simple starches, such as rice, beans, potatoes or sweet potatoes. Add in fresh vegetables and fruit. This is the “Starch Solution” of Dr. McDougall. Add seasonings to taste. For example, lunch can be a big quinoa salad with cooked chickpeas, raw tomatoes, raw cucumbers, some chopped up herbs and onion, and a few slices of avocados. Dinner can be bean tacos with corn tortillas, black beans (whole or pureed) topped with fresh or canned salsa and hot sauce! A winner every time. Use nuts, seeds and avocados according to your energy needs.

For faster healing and fat loss, try a raw or high-raw diet. Replace one or more cooked meal with a raw meal, but make sure you eat enough fruit to get the calories you need.

Eliminate oils from your diet or use them only on occasion and extremely sparingly.

If you stray off the diet, make it a rare occasion, like traditional societies did in the past. They would slaughter a pig for a big feast, but not eat meat every day of the year. Eat cake for your birthday if you’d like, but don’t make it an every day or even an every-week thing!

Don’t consume any liquid calories except on special occasion.

Don’t cook with salt and don’t eat processed foods. Watch out for restaurant food. If desired, add salt to the surface of food after cooking. That’s where you can taste it the most. Doing this will keep you well under the upper limits for sodium consumption.

Diet and nutrition can be confusing, and journalists love to confuse the public with big headlines and studies of dubious value. One week, coffee is thought to be healthy and the next week, we learn that it can raise cholesterol levels. The average person will think “why bother if they can’t make up their mind? I’ll just eat whatever I want.”

In reality, nutrition is simple.

Don’t eat a Western diet and you’ll avoid Western diseases of affluence.

Eat whole plant foods (starches or fruit) as the main source of your calories. Eat vegetables. Don’t eat rich foods except on special occasions. That’s it! Add a form of exercise that you like and can incorporate into your life.

Doing that alone will save you from 75% of the diseases most people end up dying from in our world and will add at least ten good years to your life!

How to Travel and Stay Vegan (or Raw) by Frederic Patenaude

Do not forget to check on the deals below for great products to buy as holiday gifts for family and friends.

How to Travel and Stay Vegan (or Raw) by Frederic Patenaude

I often get the question “How do you stay vegan or raw when traveling to such and such country?”

I’ve traveled to many remote destinations where there was not a health food store or healthy restaurant in sight.

I could tell you about places in the world, like Istanbul, where people think that being a vegetarian means that you eat chicken (and they’ll argue their point with you!). Or remote islands in the Pacific where you cannot find any raw food besides coconuts.

Some people say, “I’m on vacation, I’ll just eat whatever I want.” And I used to be one of those people.

But if you can maintain your healthy lifestyle while traveling and it’s not that complicated to do so, and in fact much cheaper, doesn’t make sense just to try?

You’ll avoid so many health problems that plague travelers. And you’ll come back from the trip invigorated and not tired and thinking “Now I need to go on a cleanse!”

I’m not going to tell you about researching vegetarian restaurants in advance because most vegetarian restaurants around the world serve unhealthy foods (loaded with oil and salt). Sometimes, you’re better off ordering off-the-menu at a non-vegetarian restaurant than going to a vegan place.

You’re better off for your wallet and health to avoid restaurant as much as possible.

The keyword you must remember is “self-catering.” Whenever you’re searching for a place to stay, search for a place with a kitchen or one that advertises “self-catering.” That means you can make your own food. Once you have a room with access to a kitchen, everything else is easy!

So you see, I’ve solved 90% of your diet and traveling problems there.

The next option is to pack foods with you, which can be useful when traveling to remote destinations.

There are plenty of options such as: bringing a travel rice cooker (which can be used reheat other items), dried fruit, nuts, vegan camping meals (such as Pack Lite), and “slow cooking” in a thermos (for example adding hot water and lentils or dried soup and letting it cook).

There are many more options if you are creative.

A last but interesting option is to go fruitarian! Because you know you can live on fruit for several weeks or months at a time, if your destination has access to a fruit market, then you only need a knife and a lightweight bowl, and you’re good to go!

So as you can see, traveling and eating a super-healthy diet is not only possible but can be empowering and fun!

So where are you going to go next? My next dream destinations are the Greek Islands and Roatan, in Honduras.

I created a complete course on How to Travel the World for Free, which will show you exactly how to get your flights and accommodation for free or at a deep discount.

An Unusual Cure for Winter Blues by Frederic Patenaude

Check out the great deals below on products from Frederic. The special offers are subject to change at any time, so buy now for your holiday gift giving.

An Unusual Cure for Winter Blues by Frederic Patenaude

When November comes, I start feeling the “winter blues.”

Because I live in a Northern climate, I experience the short days in October, November and December.

By November, things get pretty dire rather quickly, with sunset before 5 p.m and days getting shorter every day.

November is also a rather rainy and gray month for the most part.

A slight bout of winter blues means that you’ll feel less energetic, have trouble getting up or staying asleep, and feel not as zesty as usual.

For many, this can turn into a full-blown depression — seasonal affective disorder (SAD), as it’s called.

The most commonly discussed way to prevent this is light therapy.

It works, as long as you start it pretty early (in September or even late August), and keep it up every single day for the entire winter.

You have to get a light designed for this — 10,000 Lux.

You have to be fairly close to the light, without looking at it. And you have to do it for 30 minutes, every single morning. Many do it while eating breakfast or reading.

This works… but it’s also a big commitment.

There are two lesser-known ways to beat the winter blues.

You’ll never hear them discussed in the media. But they work faster and the results are more permanent!

1) Fasting

Fasting (on water) stimulates the production of natural endorphins. At the end of a day of fasting, you naturally feel more alive, energetic, and more importantly: mood significantly improves.

In the winter, I fast one day per week for 24 to 36 hours. I find that this really works to avoid feeling the “winter blues.”

Also, I think our bodies are naturally designed to get fewer calories in the winter, because this has been a time of semi-starvation, in our long evolution as a species.

Our bodies go through several physiological changes before the winter: we gain weight, we feel less energy. This is good from an evolutionary perspective, because it helped us in the past conserve energy and last the winter.

But the problem in our modern world is that “winter never comes.” We experience the cold, but not the starvation. So we pack on the pounds and feel depressed.

One way to overcome is to fast one day per week. That way, your body will think that “winter is coming” and will react appropriately. Your mood will significantly improve and you’ll avoid the fat gain that most experience during the winter.

(Note that some people shouldn’t fast, due to health concerns).

2) A High-Raw Diet

A raw diet is an amazing tool to improve mood and energy levels. Most people think of doing this during the summer, but the winter is actually a great time to eat more raw!

Again, this comes down to this “winter hypothesis” I just talked about.

A raw diet is naturally less caloric dense, but contains more nutrients.

Your body will react react by burning fat and producing endorphins — feel-good hormones. This would technically encourage you to go out there and seek some rich food!

When you combine both fasting and a raw diet, you have a powerful combo to ward off winter blues or even depression.

You don’t even have to eat 100% raw to experience the results. Just 50 to 80% raw will do it!

And fasting isn’t necessary if you get closer to 100% raw.

Anatomy of a Craving by Frederic Patenaude

Check out the special offers below on products from Frederic, as the prices are subject to change without notice!

Anatomy of a Craving by Frederic Patenaude

Have you noticed that almost all cravings for unhealthy foods come in the evening or at night?

I’ve heard that cravings are caused by low-blood sugar, food addiction, emotional eating, yin/yang imbalance, hormonal problems, dehydration, and nutritional deficiencies.

In my experience, none of these reasons are the cause of food cravings in most people.

80% of the time, food cravings are caused by:

1) Under-eating complex carbohydrates or fruit
2) Poor planning: you just don’t have enough tasty, healthy meals available at the right time

Let’s take a closer look.

The first reason is often overlooked. You’re not eating enough of the foods your body needs to be satisfied and maintain its energy levels.

Many popular diets tell you to fill up on vegetables — which contain virtually no calories. Plenty of vitamins and minerals, but none of the main thing that your body actually needs the most: glucose.

Other diets tell you to fill up on fat, such as found in nuts and seeds, olive oil, and avocado. But fat is the least satiating type of macronutrient — and every experiment done has proved this. You can sneak in extra calories in the form of oil in the food and people eat the same quantity (but more calories) without feeling more satisfied.

Protein can be satiating because it tends to curb feelings of hunger. But eating high-protein food doesn’t give you what your body actually craves: glucose. So that’s why people still crave sugar after a high-protein, “low-carb” meal, and eventually fall off the wagon to binge on rolls and other refined carbs like desserts!

When you give your body plenty of healthy, whole food sources of glucose — as in whole fruit, and healthy starches (rice, potatoes, beans, etc.) — cravings miraculously go away.

My mom lost 60+ pounds eating as many of those foods as she cared for, without every counting calories. And thousands of people have done the same.

I hope that I’m not bragging by saying that I never get food cravings for things like chocolate, ice-cream, desserts, decadent food, chips, etc. Why? Because I’m not restricting at all the one category of nutrient that my body needs the most!

Poor Planning

People often tell me: “if I had a personal chef making me tasty, high raw, low-fat vegan recipes at home — then maybe I could do this diet. But I just don’t have the time!”

My fridge is always stocked with a ton of super-healthy meals that I prepare in advance, in a flash. I’m prepared, therefore I don’t have cravings!

If you get bored with your food, you’ll crave something else. If you open the fridge and tasty, healthy food greets you, you’re not going to be looking for something else. It’s that simple!

Another problem is that most raw food recipes are either too complicated, or too unhealthy, often loaded with fats and oils.

You don’t have 100% perfect to make this diet work.

You only have to focus all of your attention on the things that truly matter — what I call the 20% that gives you 80% of the results.

1) Eat enough whole fruit and complex carbohydrates
2) Have a system for food prep that rotates tasty meals that are easy to prepare in advance.

Don’t aim at perfection. Choose a program that works and makes you happy. Focus on just a few changes that will make the biggest difference in your health, rather than trying to change everything.

Maybe your food is not always organic. Maybe you might add some salt and seasonings to your food, instead of eating everything plain. So what? As long as you focus on the 20% that matters, you’ll get 80% of the results, and more!

Our program ”One Year of Raw Foods” features complete menu planners for every day of the year, and more resources to make this diet work.

This program features exactly what to eat, day by day, based on seasonal ingredients (no mangoes in January!), and a complete shopping list to help with your errands.

Bad Teeth? The Surprising True Cause – by Frederic Patenaude

Great article by Frederic and at the bottom there are some special offers on his products to my readers.

Bad Teeth? The Surprising True Cause – by Frederic Patenaude

Ever since our childhood, we’ve heard the same basic advice about dental health, which can be summarized as follows:

“Brush after meals, use floss, avoid sweets and see the dentist every six months.”

It turns out that this advice is in large part useless and does not truly work.

How do I know this?

Apart from the fact that dentist offices are filled with people who have tried to follow this advice to the best of their ability, and yet find themselves again and again in the dentist chair, fixing more problems, I’ve had my own personal journey that led me to question this precept.

In 2001, I got extremely bad news from my dentist. After living exclusively on a raw food diet and had been doing so for almost three years, I got some sobering news from my dentist: I had developed 19 cavities.

At the time, fixing all of those teeth cost more than I could afford, and was also painful and traumatizing.

After that experience, I kept on eating a raw food diet, but I cleaned it up. I paid real attention to my dental hygiene. I flossed every day and brushed after every meal. I had all of my teeth fixed.

I thought… “Things will be much better on my next dentist’s appointment.”

One day, less than two years later, I was eating a grape and while chewing around the seed, one of my filings broke.

So I went to the dentist again, this time, to a holistic dentist in Montreal who practiced mercury-free dentistry. I thought that maybe I would have a cavity or two, but not more than that.

When the dentist examined my mouth, I heard him mention all of these tooth names to his assistant, and it didn’t sound very good. I knew I was in trouble again. Finally, I got the news that again, I had around 20 cavities!

I was absolutely devastated.

I thought I had done everything right. I had been brushing my teeth religiously. I had eliminated most of the junk raw food I was eating before.

But I had been traumatized by this experience. Again, I had to go through the pain and humiliation of getting my teeth fixed.

I decided to go on a personal quest, to find out what I could to to stop this, and never get another cavity or dental problem again.

What I Discovered In My Research

First, I interviewed about half a dozen dentists, who seemed incapable of giving me a single piece of advice I hadn’t already heard before.

– Don’t eat sweets
– Brush after every meal
– Use a fluoride toothpaste (some avoided this and told me the opposite)
– Eat a small piece of cheese after every meal, to neutralize the acidity
– Etc, etc.

I was trying my best to apply the so-called principles of dental hygiene, but things were not progressing in the right direction.

And I was worried.

Because dental disease may start with cavities, but it eventually progresses to worst stages. Gums are affected, pockets form, inflammation starts, and teeth are eventually at risk of falling off.

I did NOT want any of that to happen to me.

One day, everything changed.

I came across a program by a certain Dr. Nara on how to prevent dental problems for life. Dr. Nara was a controversial dentist who ran into some trouble with the dentist associations by writing about the true cause of dental disease, and also teaching people how to become dentally self-sufficient.

I tried Dr. Nara’s methods, and surprisingly, they worked! In fact, my dentist was totally shocked by the results.

I had some cavities that were starting to form, and they had stopped in their track and the teeth had re-enamilized. My dentist said that this was something that was possible theoretically but that he had never seen it before on a patient.

He told me: “You must have changed something. You don’t have any cavities. Your teeth are doing great!”

That was about 10 years ago, and since then, I have carefully applied Dr. Nara’s advice while continuing to research the topic. I now believe that the entire field of dentistry has misled the public for years by never truly explaining the true cause of dental problems and how to not only prevent them, but also reverse them.

I was so taken by this research that I wanted to share it with the world. So years ago, I worked with the publishers of Dr. Nara’s books to acquire the publishing rights, so I could spread this controversial knowledge to more people.

The Surprising Cause Behind Bad Teeth

Let me summarize it: We’re dealing with a transmittable disease. It is essentially a war against bacteria. You win or you lose the war. It’s that simple.

The enemy, the acid-producing bacteria that cause dental decay, organize into colonies. Once they get entrenched, it’s very hard to get them out into a normal, free flowing state where they can’t cause much damage.

Standard dental hygiene advice is not enough to bring the bacteria count to a lower level.

Instead, you have to take more aggressive (but careful) action, by implementing a daily “super-hygiene” routine.

With this super-hygiene routine, I discovered that I could control approximately 90% of my dental health, with the other 10% being influenced by diet. So diet does matter, but it is not the primary CAUSE of dental problems.

What dentists don’t talk about are important things such as:

– Controling acidity in the mouth
– Using xylitol products to reduce the bacterial count
– Why certain mouth rinses are important and how to use them
– Exactly how to brush your teeth for maximum results

Why Raw Foodists Have Bad Teeth

It seems that dental health is the Achilles’ heel of the raw food diet. A Germany study, published in 1999, even proved that raw foodists do experience more dental erosion than the general population.

Why is that?

For the same reason why everyone has problems with their teeth. The only difference is that the raw food diet includes more frequent fuel to the fire.

The fire is the bacterial count.

The fuel is the foods we eat, especially single sugars that are common in raw food diet.

Once you understand this simple concept, you’ll be able to eradicate decay for life. You have to extinguish the fire! Just controlling the fuel is not enough.

What happens is that when people move into the raw-food diet, they are basically a time-bomb as far as their dental health is concerned. Their bacteria count is a little toohigh, but not high enough to cause major problems.

Suddenly, they dump a bunch of sugar into their mouths. This sugar creates a giant feast for the bacteria who feed on them.

So in that sense, the introduction of a higher quantity of natural sugar is the determining factor. This sugar can be in various forms. There is no difference between white sugar and banana sugar when it comes to increasing the bacteria count in the mouth!

If your oral environment is really clean… it doesn’t really matter if you eat dates all day. If the bacteria count is low, you can do that without problems.

So although the *precipitating* factor that creates problem for raw-foodists is the introduction of more sugar, the *real* problem are the underlying issues, so the bacteria count! Like I said, 90% of the problems can be solved by dental hygiene alone, and 10% is diet-specific.

The only way to prevent dental decay for life and reverse a bad situation is to take active control of your oral environment. Just controlling your diet does not address the root of the problem.
