Can Raw Foods DESTROY Your Teeth? by Frederic Patenaude
You know all of the health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, but did you know that eating only raw foods could potentially put your teeth at risk?

That’s according to a study that showed that a raw food diet increases risk of dental erosion compared to a conventional diet.

How does raw food affect your teeth, and what can you do to protect them?

What the Study Showed

Researchers from Germany studied 130 subjects whose diet consisted of more than 95 percent raw food. The median duration of the diet was 39 months, with a minimum of 17 months, and a maximum of 418 months.

These participants answered questionnaires recording their food intake during a 7-day period before starting the study.

Researchers then randomly selected 76 gender- and age-matched participants for use as a control group. Using study models, they then registered tooth decay in both groups.

Their findings? Compared to the control group, subjects living on a raw food diet had significantly more tooth decay. 60.5 percent of the raw food eaters had at least one tooth with a severe decay, versus 31.6 percent of the control group.

Why Did This Happen?

Researchers aren’t sure why. They noted that within the raw food group, they could find no significant correlation between nutrition or oral health data. Nevertheless, the results showed that raw food eaters were more at risk.

One thing to note is the high amount of fruit eaten by the raw foodists. The raw food diet records showed that people in the raw food group ate an average of 9.5 kg (21 pounds) of fruit per week. (The maximum amount consumed for one person was 23.7 kg (52 pounds!), which is a lot of fruit!)

It’s no secret that although fruit has many health benefits, it can also be high in sugar and acidity, which is a double whammy for teeth.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has advised that the safest approach when eating apples is to eat them only at mealtimes, (and then rinse out the mouth to minimize tooth damage).

Added to that is the fact that the sugar content of apples (and likely other fruits) has increased by up to 50 percent over the last couple decades, as farmers breed varieties to have a sweeter taste.

New research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that the typical modern apple now has a sugar content of up to 15 percent. This means it contains the equivalent of four teaspoons of sugar.

A BDA spokesperson noted that once enamel is worn away, it doesn’t regenerate.

“Research shows that dental erosion in adults due to diet is usually a result of excessive consumption of fruits and fruit juices.”

Other Potential Causes

The aforementioned research is only one study.

It had a relatively small number of participants.

However, it brings up an important concern. Can a raw food diet be stressful for your teeth?

It’s safe to say that if your diet contains a lot of fruit, your teeth can be at risk. Beyond that, we need more research to discover the answers.

Some raw foodists who have experienced teeth problems after switching to raw have some additional theories.

Eating more often may be part of the issue. Once switching to a raw diet, you may find yourself grazing. Even if you’re snacking on healthy foods, frequent eating can disrupt the natural remineralization of your tooth enamel. Typically after you eat, your saliva goes to work rebuilding enamel.

However, if your saliva is constantly breaking down more food, and if that food is more sugary and acidic, your tooth enamel is more likely to suffer.

Another possibility is that due to the increased intake of nuts, dried fruit, and dehydrated foods food more easily becomes lodged between teeth where it is hard to remove. The longer food debris stays stuck on or between teeth, the easier for bacteria to attack.

How to Protect Your Teeth While Enjoying a Raw Food Diet (and Fruits!)

The answer, fortunately, is not to stop eating fruits or nuts or other great raw foods. The answer is to consider changing how you take care of your teeth in between meals and snacks.

One thing to be careful of—brushing right after eating an acidic food is actually worse for your teeth than doing nothing at all. Acid breaks down enamel, leaving your teeth vulnerable. Enamel softened by an acid attack can be scrubbed away by the toothbrush.

Is Acid Wreaking Your Teeth? by Frederic Patenaude

Is Acid Wreaking Your Teeth? by Frederic Patenaude

There’s a threat to the health of your teeth that you may not recognize.

It’s called acidity.

Our saliva is naturally alkaline and prevents enamel erosion by supplying minerals to the teeth in between meals.

However, when the saliva becomes more acidic, more bacteria thrive and produce more acids, which eats away at our enamel.

But another more common threat is the onslaught of acid from the foods we eat.

A little acidity is good — our bodies can deal with it and restore alkaline balance after a meal. But when our enamel is already weak, and we start feeling the effects (sensitive teeth, cavities, etc.), we must give our teeth a break from all this acid!

Another problem is that we expose our teeth to acids more than ever before.

We drink healthy juices, or smoothies, which are often made with acidic fruits like apples, lemons or citrus.
We drink apple cider vinegar, hibiscus tea or lemon water.
We squeeze lime juice all over our food or use balsamic vinegar in an attempt to use less salt or improve flavor.
We drink wine, coffee, and other highly acidic beverages.
Acid is everywhere!

If you’ve been experiencing problems with your teeth, it may be time to give yourself a break from this acid onslaught.

It may be a chance to go on an acid-free diet! Not forever, but to give your teeth enough time to build back some enamel and get strong again.

Here are some foods to avoid during this “acid-free diet.”

Balsamic and all vinegar
Lemon, lime juice
Citrus
Many other fruits: berries, apples, mangoes, grapes, etc.
Coffee, wine
Pickles and fermented vegetables
Tomatoes and tomato products
Soda
I’m not saying that all of the acid-containing foods I just mentioned are unhealthy. Many are super healthy! But, when you want to rebuild your enamel, it’s essential to minimize or avoid these foods for a while.

Instead, you can eat all of the non-acidic foods, such as:

Nonacidic fruits: melons, papayas, bananas, dates, persimmons, etc.
Most vegetables (But beware: many become acidic when roasted).
Most foods you can think of that don’t taste acidic (whole grains, beans, avocados, etc.)
Acid Vs. Acid-Forming

It’s important to understand that a food item can be acidic (contain acids) but be alkaline-forming after digestion, while other food items can be alkaline or neutral, but become acidic after digestion. This is due to the mineral balance in the food and the presence of acid-forming amino acids. That is why most acidic fruits are alkaline-forming while most animal products are acid forming. Grains are slightly acid forming.

Of course, we’re talking about the contact of acid with your teeth, which is different. Ideally, you would want to eat a predominantly alkaline-forming diet that’s also low in acids.

The Acid-Free Diet Is Not Enough

The acid-free diet will help give your teeth a break and enable the rebuilding of enamel. However, you also need to ensure that you’re doing everything you can to turn actively around your dental health for the better.

The only way to prevent dental decay for life and reverse a bad situation is to take active control of your oral environment. Just eating less acid alone does not guarantee you’ll become cavity-proof.

Find out the exact method that I use to reverse and prevent dental problems, make sure to get the new edition of our program “How to Heal and Prevent Dental Disasters.”

In it, you will discover:

• How to care for your teeth (forget the TV commercials!)
• What you can do for your teeth if you already have decay above or below the gumline, pain, bleeding or loose teeth…
• Why the dental industry on purpose wants you to come back for more visits with new problems to “fix” every time.
• What to do if you lose a filling, chip or lose a tooth, etc.
• And much more

Yikes! I am eating RAW and my teeth are getting worse! Here is a solution!

My friend Frederic is offering some great information and a special offer on this product. Check out what he has to say!

Why Raw Foodists Have Such Bad Teeth

Today I want to talk about the poor dental health of raw
foodists. But first, a reminder:

For one week only, till October 7th get the course “How to Heal and Prevent
Dental Disasters” for $20 instead of $37. Use coupon code

I have over 12 years of experience in the raw food movement.
I’ve written several books on the subject, I’ve had one of
the very first raw food websites on the Internet, and I’ve
been in touch with tens of thousands of people following
this diet over the years.

I’ve met most of the raw-food leaders personally, and I’ve
even worked with many of them. I’ve even personally coached
hundreds of people to succeed with a raw food lifestyle.

And after all of these years, I’ve come to the conclusion
that raw-foodists have the worst dental health of any other
“health group” in the world.

Every week, I have raw foodists contact me. They often tell
the same story “I had great results on the raw food diet, until
I started having problems with my teeth.”

What I have observed is:

* I high incidence of dental decay among raw-foodists, after
they switch to the diet
* A high incidence of gum recession and enamel erosion among
raw-foodists
* Sudden, drastic & dramatic dental problems that occur
typically 1 to 3 years after a person has switched to the
raw food diet, and tend to persist overtime.

A study done in Germany found that when subjects switched to
a raw-food diet, they experienced a higher incidence of
enamel erosion.

I have gone through a series of dental problems myself as a
direct result of following the raw-food diet incorrectly
(and I’m not even talking about eating a lot of dates
here), and I have met at least several hundred people who
have gone through similar issues.

I know several leaders of the raw-food movement who have
experience an increasing number of dental problems on the
raw food diet, and still won’t come clean about it and
explain to their followers why this happens.

———————————
The “weak link” of the raw diet
———————————

There’s a lot of positive aspects to the raw food diet. But
the issue of dental health is the real weak link. A person
can experience lots of wonderful beneficial effects on the
raw food diet, but notice their dental health go downhill.

In my experience, it’s also the number one reason why
people quit on the diet after being successful with it for
many years.

It doesn’t happen to every raw-foodist. It probably happens
to the large majority however, and there is a direct
correlation between the switch to the raw diet and the
development of dental problems.

———————————
The Two Culprits
———————————

At this point, if you have the least interest in eating raw
foods, you should start reading very, very closely.

Dental decay is not caused by eating the wrong diet. That’s
right. Dental decay is actually a *transmittable disease*.
Dental decay is the result of the proliferation of certain
types of bacteria in the oral environment. The bacteria
eliminate acid waste that eat into your teeth and cause
decay.

There are only TWO reasons why raw-foodists experience more
problems when they moved to the diet. But before we look at
them, let’s take a look at what is NOT the cause of these
problems. So raw-foodists DON’T have problems with their
teeth because…

– They don’t eat enough greens
– They don’t get the proper ratio of calcium/phosphorus
– They are not consuming “super nutrition”
– They are not consuming enough calories
– They eat too many acid forming foods like nuts and seeds

All of the reasons above are NOT why raw-foodists get
problems with their teeth. The only two reasons why
raw-foodists get problems with their teeth are:

– Underlying issues (the bacteria count)
– Sugar

Once you understand this simple concept, you’ll be able to
eradicate decay for life.

What happens is that when people move into the raw-food
diet, they are basically a time-bomb as far as their dental
health is concerned. Their bacteria count is a little too
high, but not high enough to cause major problems.

Suddenly, they dump a bunch of sugar into their mouths. This
sugar creates a giant feast for the bacteria who feed on
them.

So in that sense, the introduction of a higher quantity of
natural sugar is the determining factor. This sugar can be
in various forms… it doesn’t matter for the bacteria who
feed on them! There is no difference between white sugar and
banana sugar when it comes to increasing the bacteria count
in the mouth!

And this sugar is plentiful in the raw food diet. We’re
talking about:

– Fresh fruits (bananas, mangoes, etc.)
– Fruit juices
– Dried fruits
– Nuts and seeds (which stick to the teeth)
– Raw food “bars” and dehydrated treats
– Dates
– Smoothies (that’s right)
– Green smoothies (that’s right)
– Coconut water

Now… here’s where it gets interesting. Sugar is food for
the bacteria.

Normally, you want your bacteria count to be as low as
possible. You want to avoid bacteria forming in to
*colonies* and creating their own little civilization in
your mouth.

If your oral environment is really clean… it doesn’t
really matter if you eat dates all day. If the bacteria
count is low, you can do that without problems.

So although the *precipitating* factor that creates problem
for raw-foodists is the introduction of more sugar, the
*real* problem are the underlying issues, so the bacteria
count!

The only way to prevent dental decay for life and reverse a
bad situation is to take active control of your oral
environment. Just controlling your diet does not address the
root of the problem.

That’s why I publish the best course available on the
topic, called “How to Heal and Prevent Dental Disasters.”

This program has been created by OraMedia and is the only
course I have discovered that tells you exactly how to avoid
dental problems for the rest of your life.
