Elite Naturel – Organic Juice Company

Elite Naturel – Organic Juice Company

I met Çagri Esmekya, General Manager of Elite Naturel http://www.elitenaturel.com on the last day of the Natural Products Expo West March 2015 in Anaheim, CA. I was on my way out of the Convention Center and noticed the bottles of juice at his booth and asked to take some. He was very generous to late me take quite a few bottles (of course, he did plan to take it back with him to NY and probably would have been donated). I agreed to do a product review on my blog of the juices and some are very unique. Even though I received the products in March 2015, it has taken some time to go through and taste all the products. I wanted to do one comprehensive post for all the products I have, instead of for each individual one. The main office for this company is in Turkey. They also have offices in NY, Germany and China.

All the products are sold in glass, I am happy to say, as I am not a “fan” of plastic, and are kosher (OU symbol), USDA certified organic, gluten-free, Non GMO Certified, not from concentrate (except for the watermelon juice) no added sugar, certified Fair Trade and have no additives, no colorings or preservatives. So you know, they are flash pasteurized. Once opened they must be refrigerated and consumed within 5 days. I also recommend when drinking fruit juices to swish some water in your mouth afterwards so the sugars do not stay on your teeth and prevent any tooth decay.

I am including pictures of the bottles for you to see. The labels are informative (although not always written in English, so do not understand all it says) and have nice pictures of the fruit, as well.

Update – 2/8/16: I have never looked at their website before and just did to see what their product line is like and if I could find more information about one of their juices and it seems that most of what I am reviewing here may/may not be available anymore, as it looks like the packaging has changed significantly, but in any event you are welcome to read my review and check out what they do offer on their website: http://www.elitenaturel.com

Here are my thoughts on the products in order of my tasting them:

1- I first one I tried has orchids on the label and not sure what other fruit is in it.
It comes in a 200 ml glass bottle and the words are all in French. It is called Orchidée. It had a very mild mellow satisfying flavor. I had it while out walking to quench my thirst and give me more nutrients then just drinking water.

2 – The second one I tried is called Pure Yumberry Juice. It comes in a 250 ml and 1 liter glass bottles. The small bottle I had is great for traveling and I had it while I was out for a walk. I have never tried a yumberry, so not sure what it is. This was produced in Turkey, so must be one of their berries and I am sure it is also high in antioxidants, especially with the rich red color of the juice. The juice was quite thick and creamy compared to the first one above and more like a smoothie. I liked the taste very much and the amount of sweetness was just right for me.

3 – The third one I tried is called Hibiscus. There is a lovely picture of a hibiscus flower on the label. It is a blend of pomegranate juice, water and hibiscus flavor. It comes in a 250 ml glass bottle (or at least that is the one I have from the company and perhaps it comes in other sizes). The pomegranate makes it high in antioxidants, which are very important in the body and the flavor has a hint of sweetness, but is a bit more tart because of it. For those who like sweet juice, this would not be one you’d choose as your first/favorite option. Regardless, it is quite good and perhaps an acquired taste/something you can get used to.

4 – The fourth one I tried is called Fruits du Verger in a 700 ml (23.7 fl oz) glass bottle. It is a combination of 5 fruits: orange, apple, pear, plum and banana. I was not sure how I would like it because I am not a fan of bananas (actually, they do not agree with me). They is 20% juice of each of the fruits listed. When I have the first drink of it, it tasted quite good and not overly sweet. It was smooth and mellow. The banana did not stand out for me, as far as flavor, I tasted more the pear and plum. I ended up drinking the entire bottle at once because I did not eat that much and usually consume more fresh fruit during the day. It was satisfying and filling, too.

5 – The fifth one I tried is called Réveil GOURMAND in a 700 ml glass bottle. It is a combination of 6 fruits: banana, orange, pear, apple, apricot and peach. There is 20% juice of the banana and orange and the rest is 15% each. Even though there is more banana, I did not taste it, but what stood out for me from the first sip was the apricot, which I like very much. The blend of flavors was excellent and having not consumed enough of my regular fruit consumption on the day I tried it, I finished the bottle without putting it in the fridge. I like it better room temperature because too cold is too shocking to the body. So far, this is my favorite one!

6 – The sixth one I tried is called Matin Calin in a 700 ml glass bottle. It is a combination of 7 fruits: banana 10%, peach, apricot, orange, pear, strawberry and apple – 15% of each of them. It had a smooth creamy flavor and the apricot stood out most for me when I first drank it. This one has the addition of strawberry to it, which ai liked, but otherwise has the same of the rest of the fruits as #5 above. Banana, is not a fruit I consume, but when mixed in with the other fruits, I do not taste it. Again, I drank most of it at room temperature, which I prefer, but not sure if chilling it beforehand would give it a different taste.

7- The seventh one I tried is called Jasmin in a 700 ml/23.7 fl oz glass bottle. This is one of my favorite, as the flavor is light and satisfying. It is mildy sweet from the melon juice, but not overpowering. The juice is pressed with the seeds and jasmin flavor is added, although I do not know what jasmin is supposed to taste like; I am tasting the melon.

8- The eighth one I tried is called Watermelon Juice from concentrate in a narrow tall 50 cl/500 ml/16.9 oz glass bottle. From just looking at it, has a very deep red color, more like a grape juice type drink. The label does not list any ingredients, I would gather, because all it is, is watermelon. I opened up the bottle and smelled it first, and has a sweet fruity smell. I poured a couple of ounces into a glass, and seems much thicker then the other juices I tried from this company. When I drank it, was super sweet and also too much so, to drink as is. I had a few sips of water afterwards, but next time will dilute it some, to tone down the “super” sweetness, even too much for me and more like a syrup. On the second time around trying this, I diluted it with half water, but could do even more and still tasted the sweetness, but not as overpowering to the palate. I prefer drinking it this way.

9- The ninth and final one I tried is called Tomato Juice with Aegean Herbs in a small 20 cl/250 ml/~8 oz glass bottle. I looked up Aegean online and that is a region in Turkey. Here is a link if you want to check out the herbs and greens they use: http://www.turkish-cuisine.org/ingredients-7/ingredients-used-in-turkish-cuisine-66/wild-greens-and-herbs-188.html?PagingIndex=1
This is a nice savory drink, if you are looking for something different and a change of pace from always having a sweet juice. There is no detailed ingredients listed on the label and looked on their website, but did not even find the product listed It had an Italian flavor to me, although I could not see any of the herbs in the bottle. I actually decided to pour some on my salad, as a dressing and was very good.

Company/Product Review: Dastony – 100% Organic, Raw, Stone Ground Nut and Seed Butters

Dastony – 100% Organic, Raw & Stone Ground Nut and Seed Butters in business since 2011

Here is what Anna, Windy City Organics Sales and Brand Outreach, emailed me about the company:
About 3 years ago we launched Dastony….
4 years ago we developed a healthy, pure, raw version of Nutella and coined it Rawtella….we used stone grinders to get this ultra silky consistency. The owner fell in love with the stone grinding process and decided to launch a bunch of nut butters as well using super high quality ingredients. We started with just almond, cashew, coconut and sesame and have just kept adding more and more. We now have 11 flavors all together including the 4 sprouted varieties.

Here is some information from their website:

About Dastony

The inspiration for Dastony came from a desire to share what we feel is the healthiest and by the far the smoothest nut and seed butters. We are a family owned company with uncompromising standards of purity, taste, and integrity. Our values are in place due to our deep understanding of the benefits that can be achieved through quality ingredients, and when it comes to taste, well, we work tirelessly in this respect. Our integrity is unwavering and our loyal customers and fans would testify to this. To read more go to: http://dastony.com/about-dastony.html

Why Stone Ground?
We’ve all witnessed the browning of an apple. When the fruit is cut or bruised browning occurs because living cells are damaged and begin to oxidize. Now imagine the process used during the production of a typical nut butter – mastication with heavy duty metal blades. This process literally shreds, tears and cuts repeatedly until the desired texture is achieved. Any living enzymes, viable nutrients, and ‘life’ would certainly dwindle.

RAW and LIVING are principles we at Dastony are truly passionate about. Like with anything living, the energy and vital compounds found in nuts and seeds are very delicate. Our method of stone grinding is the best way to preserve and cherish this life force. Large, flawless granite wheels slowly turn ‘grinding’ the food until it is silky smooth. Temperatures well below 118 degrees are continuously maintained – another gauge for the preservation of raw and living.

From their Facebook Page:

My Review:

I have found some great products to review, simply from doing a search on Amazon. Before I decide if I even will consider the product, I read the reviews on Amazon and then search on the company site to see that it complies with my own personal high standards for myself, as well as for the public who are reading my posts and also watching my videos. Instead of buying the product, I contacted the company to see if they are willing to send me product(s) for an unbiased review. I want to thank Anna for her willingness to send me a few of the great nut and seed butters that Dastony sells.

I was so anxious to try out the butters and could not wait till the package arrived at my door. It was well worth the wait and then some. I do not think that I will ever want to eat any other nut or seed butters ever again! Once you taste the best artisan-made products (regardless of the cost), it is very difficult to eat another brand. It is the same as if you are a farmer or work at a farmers market (I do work for an organic produce farmer who has the highest quality, tastiest and unique greens and other produce – if you are interested in knowing more about him and if you live in San Diego, you can buy his produce at various markets or through his CSA – go to http://www.sagemountainfarm.com) and eat the freshest food, it is not the same to “buy” your produce, even at a health food store. Dastony uses an “old world” method for processing and offer unique products to their customers. It is worth every penny you will spend to buy them! I was also happy to find out from Anna that the facility handles only their raw tree nuts and seeds and does not process soy or dairy. Also the nuts and seeds are truly raw, as they source out the best products, especially now that raw almonds that are grown in USA are pasteurized.

I received two of their 8 oz butters: Sprouted Pumpkin Seed and Sprouted Sunflower Seed Butter (plastic containers are never used, all of the products come in glass jars). They also offer Sprouted Almond and Sprouted Sesame Seed Butter (Tahini). The difference with sprouted nuts and seeds, it that the germination allows it to be digested more easily in your body and it is considered “living food.” In order to do this, the seeds/nuts are first soaked, at least overnight and they allowed to germinate or even begin to sprout, where you see a “shoot” coming out of one end of the seed/nut. Afterwards, the seeds/nuts are dehydrated at low temperature below 118 degrees to remain raw and enzyme-rich.

The process that Dastony uses to make the butters is explained above and called “stone-ground” and was used in ancient times to make olive oil. It creates the smoothest, creamiest nut and seed butters I have ever tasted. The flavor is like nothing I have ever had before and I am sure if I did a side-by-side taste test with other companies who make nut and seed butters, they would not “hold a candle” to these products! Of course, not many are using this “old world” process as they do not want to take the time or make the effort to offer the best product to the public. They simply want the “machine” to crank out more products, so they can make more money and then, as the expression goes, “you get what you pay for.” This holds true, for sure with Dastony! The prices they charge for what you get is really “cheap” relative to the quality. I ask, please, Dastony, do not mark up the price because I think it is too low, because you still want it to be relatively affordable to the consumers and I do not want to get negative comments from people who say it is my fault that the price went up.

The other products I received (not sprouted) are a 1 oz sample jar of: Almond Butter, Cashew Butter and Coconut Butter. The cashew and coconut butters are also certified kosher by Earth Kosher. They do not sell this size to the public, but are offered in 8 and 16 oz sizes. Besides the varieties I sampled, they also offer:
Brazil Nut, Hempseed, Sesame Seed (Tahini) and Hazelnut Butters. Each butter has its own unique flavor profile, and the 3 mentioned here, to me, have a sweeter flavor and I really enjoy using them to spread on a cracker, add to a soup, smoothie, to make a nut/seed milk, sauce, dressing, dessert, etc. They are such versatile products. The possibilities are endless and is as infinite as the mind can think of! I also like to dip my yummy tri-color carrots or celery into the nut/seed butters. Sone like to split a date in half and spread some butters in there. Please note that double-dipping is not recommended and here is why: Our mouths are the dirtiest places around and if the mix of germs and bacteria present in our mouth get into a jar it can cause mold and rot. This holds true with any food in your fridge!

I know that in the future, I will be purchasing my nut and seed butters from Dastony and enjoying the love and care that goes into each of their products.

Disclaimer: I was not sponsored to write this, but I did receive a sample of the product(s). These are strictly my opinions. I only review products that I, myself would use and purchase.

I am also including some photos from the product packaging that tells you more about the product and the benefits mentioned.

Q and A Series: People, Products and the Health of Our Planet – Interview with Ellery West, CEO of Organic Essence: USDA Certified Organic Body Care Products

For the eleventh interview, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Ellery West CEO of Organic Essence: USDA Certified Organic Body Care Products.

My comment: I met Ellery at the Natural Product Expo in Anaheim, CA when the company was in its infancy and their were still packaging in plastic. The products were always certified organic and of the highest quality. Now they have “stepped it up” in their environmental stewardship and have created the zero waste packaging, made of home compostable packaging that is non-toxic and no plastic leaching from the plastic package into the products and then onto your skin.

Here is what Ellery told me about the new paper packaging: Gail West (VP Creative) and I invented the paper jar in 2008, the lip balm tube followed a few months later.

Here is some info from the home page of Organic Essence that gives you a summary of their mission and what they do: Organic Essence products are USDA certified organic with eco green, biodegradable, home compostable packaging. We use organic oils, botanicals and essential oils which are 3rd party certified to ensure that it’s not just an empty marketing claim. Many of our products are vegan with zero animal testing. Our standards are high and quality is supreme with home compostable packaging as the ultimate goal. We are industry leaders by combining a truly sustainable package with organic, sustainable ingredients.

We think organic body care is…

Better for you
Reduce chemical exposure.
Better for the planet
Reduce chemical exposure.
Better for farmers
Reduce chemical exposure.

Question #1: Tell me briefly about yourself and why you decided to get involved in the “health” industry?

I like cooking and making body care products, is a similar process. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the skin was thought to be completely inert and impermeable to chemicals that might otherwise enter the body, however we now know many chemicals can get through the skin.

Question #2: If you were stranded on a desert island and were allowed to take only 5 items with you (they can be food, books or specific products that are all health-related), what would they be and why?

Water purifier, bar soap, knife, functioning satellite phone and a desert island food finding handbook since starving before rescue would bad for your health.

Question #3: What one message do you want to share with the people of this world that is crucial for their ultimate well-being and longevity?

Overpopulation; fewer feet make for a lighter footprint. Immediately we need to become more conscious of our heedless spread of synthetic chemicals, into, onto our bodies and throughout the environment.

Questions #4: If someone could afford to purchase only one product at this moment to start their journey towards better health (food or health-related), what would you recommend and why?

Old fashioned, natural bar soap that has been made without synthetic fragrances and colorants would make a good start because the amount of exposure we get from washing our hands with detergent ‘soaps’. Don’t use hair dyes, fingernail polish and nano-particle titanium and zinc oxide sun blocks.

Question #5: Tell me more about your business/company and/or products you offer to the public to help them achieve optimal health and well-being?

Using leave-on-the-skin products that contain synthetic chemicals isn’t acceptable for people who have taken responsibility of their own, and their family’s health. Our mission is to produce organically certified body care products that lack synthetic chemicals and to make them available in packages that don’t contaminate the product with synthetic chemicals that leach from their plastic packaging.

Question #6:What are your hopes/aspirations/dreams for the future health of the people and the planet?

I hope that as a species we can properly account for the indirect, environmental costs for our way of life. We don’t want to steal from other people via the environment and through time. I also dream that we as a people become fully conscious of the potential harm we pass on to our progeny via our own synthetic chemical exposure.

Question #7: Who is your greatest hero and why?

Rachael Carson, since waking people up to the environment is hero-worthy.

Company Review: Farmhouse Culture – Fine Fermented Foods

Farmhouse Culture Raw, Organic and Fresh refrigerated fermented Krauts and Kimchis in business since 2009

Tagline from their website: “We make the best darn kraut on the planet by infusing regional organic ingredients with wildly imaginative flavor profile.”

At the Natural Product Expo in Anaheim, CA I always find great new products to share with my readers and this company is definitely one of them. There are so many things to see and there is not enough time to see it all. I am glad I found this one. I love sauerkraut/fermented foods because it is yummy and also is great for your “gut” health. Our intestinal flora needs to be continually renewed and cultured food is a way to do it right! I would rather eat food then take a pill. It also helps if you are dealing with any issues of gluten/celiac (which we probably all have, even if we do not get tested) because it has to do with inflammation in the colon and high quality fermented foods help a lot!

When I tasted the krauts from Farmhouse Culture, I wanted more. They are so good and the flavors are so unique. Even more then that, is their packaging. It is not in a jar, as with most companies, they actually use a pouch that does not leach harmful chemicals (no BPA’s, PVC plasticizers or phthalates). It is commonly used in Europe and this company is the first to use it. What makes it special is the patented Ferment-O-Vent which releases the buildup of pressure without harmful bacteria entering and allows the healthful micro-organisms room to grow. Also, the pouch gas a lower carbon footprint and takes less energy to produce and transport then glass.

My Review

Overall impression: Love the colorful packaging/stand-up pouches with the peek-a-boo windows to see what is inside. All the products are great! It depends on your taste buds and how much “heat” you can handle whether you would try/like the spicier krauts and kimchi. I live the unique flavors/ingredients used as it perks up/excites your palate!

Krauts

1- Garlic Dill Pickle

This is my all time favorite! #1 for me! It reminds me of Gus Pickles, a company on the Lower East Side of NY where I used to go as a child with my Dad and siblings to get fresh pickles out of the barrels. This is better because it is organic, too. It is so good, I could eat the whole bag. I also love dill and the flavor is great! This is another really good one if you do not want a spicy kraut.

2- Ginger Beet

This is my 2nd favorite! I love the color of this product. It is also high in Vitamin C. Be careful because it may stain you since it has the red color from the beets. Since it is fermented, it actually smells like cooked beets. It also has ginger, which is warming to the body and has medicinal benefits. This flavor is very good and it not too strong for me to handle like the chili and jalepeño in the other products.

3- Classic Caraway

This is my 3rd favorite! This is really good with only a few ingredients. It is simply delicious. For those of you who do not want a spicy sauerkraut, this is a great option. They carry it in a larger pouch, 22 oz size, as it is probably one of the most popular and perhaps was their first product sold.

4- Horseradish Leek

This is my 4th favorite! High in Vitamin C and A. I am familiar with horseradish, as I eat it on Passover, called “marror” or bitter herbs. I like this flavor and it does not taste bitter to me. It has a slight “bite” and not overly strong where I can not eat it.

5- Smoked Jalapeño

This is my 5th favorite! High in Vitamin C. It has daikon radish which is a very good food for the body. It is known to “cut the fat” when eating fatty/oily animal foods – you would grate it finely and eat with your meal. It is also used medicinally – the greens are dried for a hip bath for feminine issues, the radish is also sun-dried and used in cooking. This flavor was spicy for me – hot! It is tasty and flavorful and has a nice crunch. After a short while I got used to it and wasn’t too hot for me.

Kimchi

Spicy Wakame Ginger

This is my 6th favorite! it is high in Vitamin C. It has wakame seaweed which is used in Japanese culture, mostly in miso soup and helps get rid of heavy metal toxicity in the body and high in minerals. It also has ginger which is warming and medicinal to the body. This one was Very Hot for me! The chili powder is more powerful in the heat index then is jalepeño, in my opinion. It is super intense and still is good. The way I can handle it, is by eating a little hit at a time.

Foods Alive – Life Giving and Mineral-Rich Artisan Crafted Organic Raw Living Foods Part 3 In business since 2002

I am choosing to quote info from the company and their website, as they explain about the products very well and I wanted to make sure I give them credit for it. I am simply giving my reviews of the products based on tasting and using them to create delicious recipes which you can watch me make on my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheRawsomeVeganGal

From Foods Alive website: http://www.foodsalive.com/?Click=827
We source the highest quality and best tasting super foods from across the globe to bring you and your family the most mineral rich and nutrient dense foods available. Super Foods are a great source of Anti-oxidants, Amino Acids (proteins), Dietary Fiber and many other hard to find essential vitamins and minerals that are necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Raw Super Foods

White Mulberry

From Foods Alive website: White Mulberries are naturally sweet, chewy, multi-seeded clusters of vanilla scented goodness! White Mulberries contain the most phenols among the various species. Recent studies show that Mulberries contain polyphenols (normally found in grapes and red wine), flavonoids, anthocyanins, alkaloids, and resveratol. For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/White-Mulberries-Organic-8-oz-p/0027.htm?Click=827

My review: These are so yummy, I could eat the whole bag at once (then I would not have any left, so I will have to exercise self-control, but I could get more, right?). What a great snack when on the go and you can also add to a trail mix or fruit salad. These is no preparation involved, just take the bag with you and have some while you are hiking, walking, etc. And don’t forget to share some with your friends and let them know where they can get a bag of healthy goodness!

Coconut Sugar Crystals

From Foods Alive website: Food’s Alive’s coconut sugar is a sustainable, healthy, low glycemic alternative to common sweeteners. It can be used as an equal replacement for other sweeteners such as agave, turbinado, evaporated cane juice or refined white sugar. It has been a long celebrated tradition in food and medicine for thousands of years, throughout Southern and Southeastern Asia.
For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Coconut-Sugar-Crystals-Organic-14-oz-p/0065.htm?Click=827

My review: Great alternative to use for baking, smoothies, sweet dressings, sauces, salads, etc. I use it in my Superfood Beverage that you can watch me make and taste in my latest youtube video on my channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheRawsomeVeganGal

Himalayan Pink Salt

From Foods Alive website: 100% Pure Mineral Salt from a pristine area deep in the Himalayan Mountain Range. Himalayan Pink Salt is the purest and most beneficial form of salt crystals in the world. This fine granulated crystal salt works well for salt shakers and cooking recipes. For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Himalayan-Pink-Salt-14-oz-p/0040.htm?Click=827

My review: It has a beautiful pink color and is a culinary delight! I use it in small amounts to add minerals to what I am preparing. It is also great to add to a foot soak or in a bath, as the body absorbs the nutrients quicker through the skin.

Glass Drinking Straw

From Foods Alive website: This unique 8-inch glass drinking straw is environmentally friendly and incredibly elegant. When you use your glass straw, you reduce the number of plastic straws that end up in our landfills and avoid consuming the toxins that plastic straws can leach into your drinks.
For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Glass-Drinking-Straw-8-p/0044.htm?Click=827

My review: I love this glass straw! It is a must if you have children and they like to use a straw to drink their beverage because it is a lot more fun that way! You do not want plastic, as the chemicals leach into your food and then you are drinking that. Yuck! It is very durable, dishwasher safe, non-toxic, hypoallergenic and can be used in hot or cold beverages. Lets keep more plastic out of the landfills bcause the situation is getting beyond a HUGE problem for the environment. You can go online and find endless video on this issue. Plastics are ubiquitous and if each of us can do one thing to start, then STOP buying plastic straws. You only have to buy this ONE straw and never get another one again. So, it is also very cost effective in the long run.

Travel Case for Straight 8 inch Glass Straw

From Foods Alive website: This Glass Drinking Straw Travel Case is the perfect way to take your 8-inch Glass Straws (sold separately) on the go. With it’s secure snap-lock mechanism, you can be sure that your glass straw will be safe and sound whether you are traveling locally to meet up with a friend for lunch or packing it away in a suitcase for a vacation. NOTE: The Straight 8-inch Glass Straw (sold separately) is the ONLY straw that will fit in this great case. For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Glass-Drinking-Straw-Travel-Case-p/glass-straw-case.htm?Click=827

My review: You must have a case for your straw (this one is only for the 8-inch size) to keep it clean and prevent breakage. Also, if you are traveling or have a picnic, potluck and know you will be having a smoothie, juice, etc. you will want to “show off” your glass straw to others because they may not know about it. Then you can tell others why this straw is a great investment for their health and the environment. I think, it is also lovely to see the beautiful colors of your fruit or vegetable smoothie or juice passing through the glass as you drink it.

Cleaning Brush for Glass Straw

From Foods Alive website: If you use your glass straw a lot, then that means that you’ve been cleaning it a lot too. As a result, we are now offering this cleaning brush separately, for those who might need a new one. Use this glass straw cleaner, to clean out those hard to reach smoothie remains inside of your glass straw, so that you can keep reusing that glass straw of yours, and continue to help reduce waste in our landfills. For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Cleaning-Brush-for-Glass-Straw-p/cleaning-brush-glass-straw.htm?Click=827

My review: When you buy the straw, you get a free cleaning brush, specifically designed to clean it. Since some particulates made get stuck inside the straw from the liquid that passes through it and does not come out simply with water. If you do not have a dishwasher to do the job, this is a great tool and cleans it out very well.

Foods Alive Gear

Company Review: Foods Alive – Organic Raw Living Food Products Part 2

Foods Alive – Life Giving and Mineral-Rich Artisan Crafted Organic Raw Living Foods Part 2 In business since 2002

Hemp Products
Toasted Hemp Seeds

From Foods Alive website: Did you know that Thomas Jefferson wrote a draft of the United States Declaration of Independence on hemp paper?! Our toasted whole hemp seeds are lightly seasoned with sea salt to make a delicious, nutritious snack or food ingredient. To read more: http://www.foodsalive.com/Toasted-Hemp-Seeds-w-salt-Organic-14-oz-p/0036.htm?Click=827

My review: I am not a fan of using salt, as a rule, as you may have read a previous post I had on this topic, regardless, this product is not very salty. It has a nice crunchy taste. They are “whole” hemp seeds, as opposed to the raw “hulled” seeds (the shells are removed) that this company also sells. They are really yummy and it is hard to stop eating them. If you like salty snacks, order more then one bag, especially if you a family. This is a great healthy savory snack to eat right out of the bag or add to salads, trail mix, soups, etc.

Hemp Protein Powder

From Foods Alive site: Hemp seeds are one of nature’s best sources for plant-based protein. Containing all of the essential amino acids the body needs, our hemp protein powder is a perfect boost to your morning. Try adding hemp protein powder to your smoothies, shakes and yogurt, or use hemp protein to replace up to 25% of the flour in a baked good. To read more: http://www.foodsalive.com/Hemp-Protein-Powder-Organic-50-protein-8-oz-p/0035.htm?Click=827

My review: The hemp protein powder is made from milling and sifting the hemp seed cake, which is a by-product of pressing hemp seeds into hemp oil. Hemp is a great source for plant-based protein and is also low in fat and high in EFA’s. You can make shakes and smoothies with it and use for baking. I experimented with it to make savory protein-rich truffles and also a cheesy spread to put on crackers, tortillas or vegetables (I will have a video up soon on my YouTube channel with recipes).

Chia Protein Powder

From Foods Alive site: Chia Protein is crafted by carefully separating the oils from the seeds. This creates a wonderful high protein and high fiber product that can be added to a variety of different foods. Chia Protein is a very nutritious addition to protein shakes, smoothies, cereals, porridge, yogurts and more. It can also be used as a partial substitute for flour. Chia Protein is loaded with an abundance of nutients such as calcium, protein, anti-oxidants and dietary fiber and also contains all the essential Amino Acids to provide a nutritional punch! To read more: http://www.foodsalive.com/Chia-Protein-Powder-Organic-8-oz-p/0043.htm?Click=827

My review: Chia is a power-packed superfood. The powder can be used as a thickener for baking – egg replacer. You can also sprinkle it on food – salad, grains, casseroles, etc for a protein and mineral boost to your meal. I also use it to make dressings, sauces and gravies. It is low in fat and can help the body retain electrolytes because of its ability to absorb up to 12 times it weight in water.

Black Sesame Protein Powder

From Foods Alive site: Black Sesame Protein is loaded with an abundance of nutrients such as calcium, protein, anti-oxidants and dietary fiber- making it a nutritional powerhouse! Black Sesame Protein is crafted by carefully separating the oils from the seeds. This creates a wonderful high protein and high fiber product that can be added to a variety of different foods. Black Sesame Protein is a very nutritious addition to protein shakes, smoothies, cereals, porridge, yogurts and more. It can also be used as a partial substitute for flour. For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Black-Sesame-Protein-Powder-Organic-8-oz-p/0059.htm?Click=827

My review: I really like the “gritty/fluffy” nature of this product. I use it to make truffles and in a creamy sweet or savory sauce/dressing/spread. In baking it is great to add some texture. It is high in protein, low in fat and has healing properties for the kidney and liver meridians. This and all the other powders are great for shakes, smoothies, baking, etc.

Nutritional Yeast

From Foods Alive site: Nutritional yeast is an excellent source of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins (especially the B-complex vitamins including B12), and minerals. Yellow in color and with a nutty cheesy flavor, nutritional yeast is an inactive yeast that is a favorite amongst many vegans because of its unique flavor and similarity to cheese when added to foods. To read more: http://www.foodsalive.com/Nutritional-Yeast-6-oz-p/0047.htm?Click=827

My review: Some vegans may be “on the fence” about using this product, as it is made by culturing the yeast with sugarcane and beet molasses. The other side of it, is the fact that it is a great source of B-complex vitamins, including B12 and is a complete protein, as well. I have gone back and forth myself with using and not using this product. I prefer to buy a product from a company that I know is sourced to be non-GMO. Many health food stores sell it in their bulk bins and I have bought it there, in the past, but I am not so sure of the quality. I like to sprinkle it on my salads, grains and also use to make a “cheesy” spread/sauce/dressing (I will have an upcoming video with recipes using all the products).

This company offers so many great raw organic super foods to nourish and help you to achieve vibrant health. If you have not tried any as yet, now you have more information to do so. Company Review: Foods Alive – Organic Raw Living Food Products

Foods Alive – Life Giving and Mineral-Rich Artisan Crafted Organic Raw Living Foods In business since 2002

First some history of my connection with this family-owned company. I met them at Expo West in Anaheim, CA in the early days of their company (can’t remember exactly what year) and right away took a liking to them, first as people and then for their products. They had a booth at the show and I tried their products. We stayed in touch and the next year, I had the pleasure to stay with them when they came to Anaheim for the trade show. Over the years I had tried some of their flax products, specifically, their crackers as they were in the process of expanding and started to make their golden flax seed oils and dressings. Recently, I received some emails from them about their products and decided to contact them to review their products. Thanks Michael, Ellen, Matt and Tammy for all that you do and what you stand for. You are all great examples for sustainability and healthy living, yourselves and through your products, as well.

Flax Seed Products
Organic Golden Flax Crackers

Quoted from an email sent to me by Foods Alive:

Here at Foods Alive we make the best tasting flax crackers around!
We start with organic golden flaxseeds, grown in mineral rich soil to deliver the best taste. Soaking the flax to begin the germination (sprouting) process unlocks a plethora of nutrients and decreases the enzyme inhibitors and tannins. This essentially turns the flax seeds into life giving super foods. The next phase is adding just the right amount of herbs and spices until the taste is perfect.

To preserve all the vital nutrients and ensure the best possible product a custom built dehydrator dries the crackers at a low temp until they are perfectly crisp. How low you ask? Well you can plant our crackers and they will continue to sprout and grow. Now that’s a living superfood!

Our super crackers come in 6 scrumptious flavors: Original, Onion Garlic (instead of garlic bread), Mexican Harvest (croutons for taco salad), Italian Zest (great to snack on), Hemp (great for dips and spreads) and last but certainly not least, Maple & Cinnamon (great smeared with nut butter or crumbled on your oatmeal).

We are currently working on 3 new flavors: Zen, Ginger Snap, and Cheez (vegan of course) so check back regularly!

My review of the flax crackers and super sprinkles (made from the leftover crumbs of the flax crackers).

I received these flavors to try: Onion Garlic, Mexican Harvest and Italian Harvest. They are all very crunchy and have a light crisp taste. They are not like “bricks,” as I have tasted some flax crackers in the early days of them being produced by other companies and didn’t taste very good. My favorite one was the Italian flavor, as I like the herbs and spices used in them and it is mild tasting, yet flavorful. My next favorite was the Onion and Garlic and then finally the Mexican – it is a bit hot and spicy for me when I eat it by itself, but still it’s good.

I had samples of the Super Sprinkles in the same three varieties as the flax crackers. They are much easier to digest they eating the raw flax seeds out of the package. They can be used on green salads as croutons, on quinoa tabouli for an added crunch, in coleslaw, casseroles and even as a garnish for you gazpacho soup. I also like snacking on them right out of the bag and you can make a savory trail mix with dehydrated shredded shoestring vegetables and jungle peanuts.

Raw Flax Seed

From Foods Alive site: Foods Alive offers the cleanest and best tasting organic golden flax seed on the market. Flax contains high levels of dietary fiber including lignans, an abundance of micronutrients and omega-3 fatty acids. Flax fibers are amongst the oldest fiber crops in the world. The use of flax for the production of linen goes back at least to ancient Egyptian times. To continue reading: http://www.foodsalive.com/Golden-Flax-Seed-Organic-14-oz-p/0050.htm?Click=827

My review of flax seeds: they are not digestible in their “raw” state like the crackers and sprinkles and need to be ground or soaked in order to use them. Then you can use them on you cooked oatmeal or other hot cereal, sprinkled on your salad, added to your dressing, sauce or made into a spread/butter.

Raw Chia Seed

From Foods Alive website: One ounce of Chia seed contains as much omega-3 as 8-ounces of salmon, as much calcium as a cup of milk, as much fiber as 1/3 cup of bran, as much iron as 1/3 cup of spinach leaves, as much vitamin C as 2 oranges, and as much potassium as half a banana….to read more: http://www.foodsalive.com/Organic-Chia-Seeds-Raw-p/0025.htm?Click=827

My review: Most of us remember chia from the commercial years ago on TV for the Chia Pet. You water it and it grows chia sprouts all around the pet. Now chia has come back into popularity and the benefit, is that you can use it without grinding and is digestible. It is great for making puddings, sprinkled on salads oatmeal, quinoa added to smoothies and homemade jams to thicken them. It has great versatility and is a much better alternative for making jello then is the chemically filled gelatin sold in supermarkets.

Raw Hulled Hemp Seed
From Foods Alive website: Hulled hemp seeds provide all the nutritional benefits of whole seeds without the crunchy hull. They taste similar to that of a pine nut or sunflower seed and can be eaten as a snack or added to your favorite soups, sauces or dips.. Packed with Omega-3 & 6 EFA’s Hemp seeds are one of nature’s best sources for plant-based protein, containing all of the essential amino acids the body needs. To read more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Hulled-Hemp-Seeds-Organic-8-oz-p/0038.htm?Click=827

My review: I have always liked hemp seeds and they are loaded with EFA’s and so versatile. You can grind up and make your own fresh nut butter and then you can take that and add water to make hemp milk. You can leave it whole and sprinkle on your salads, grain dishes, sprinkle as a garnish on your soup, or grind to make a spread, dip, sauce or dressing. They are soft, taste very creamy and are digestible without the need to grind them.

Raw Black Sesame Seed

From Foods Alive website: Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for mitigating premature gray hair, and to nourish and fortify the liver and kidneys. These nutrient-dense seeds are also said to help blurred vision, tinnitus, and dizziness. An extremely good source of calcium, fiber, protein, phosphorous, iron, magnesium and more. To read more: http://www.foodsalive.com/Black-Sesame-Seed-Organic-14-oz-p/0049.htm?Click=827

My review: I remember using black sesame seeds when I studied macrobiotics, as they have medicinal properties in ancient medicine. We sometimes made gomashio (sesame salt – sesame seeds dry roasted with salt and then grinded in a mortar and pestle for a condiment) using the black instead of the brown sesame seeds. I like to grind and make a spread or dressing with them. They have a rich nutty flavor. Just like the brown seeds are used, these can be used to make nut butter/tahini. I have also added them to desserts. They are high in calcium that is a digestible form, as opposed to cow’s milk that the human body can not break down to use.

Raw Jungle Peanuts

From Foods Alive website: Jungle Peanuts are beautiful heirloom nuts, wild crafted by the Ashuar tribe of the Amazon. These amazing heirloom peanuts are quite likely the original ancestors to all the commercial nuts grown today. Beautiful to behold, they’re long and lean, with a deep chocolate-colored stripe. Aflatoxin Free! To read more: http://www.foodsalive.com/Jungle-Peanuts-Organic-8-oz-p/0026.htm?Click=827

My review: I first found these at my local health food store and had not eaten peanuts in a very long time, as I heard that they were not recommended because of their toxicity. These peanuts have a taste like nothing else. First you can eat the skins, they taste quite sweet and best of all don’t have the dreaded aflatoxin! I can snack on them all day! You can eat them right out of the bag, make a trail mix with them or grind into the healthiest fresh peanut butter. Most importantly, you are supporting an indigenous culture in the Amazon rainforest that harvest these heirloom peanuts and is working to gain legal title to their ancestral lands.

Raw Goji Berry

From Foods Alive website: Goji berries have been traditionally regarded as a longevity, strength-building, and potency food of the highest order. They contain 500 times the amount of vitamin C, by weight, of oranges, plus 18 amino acids, and are jam packed with a combination of polysaccharides, carotenoids, and anthocyanins. To read more: http://www.foodsalive.com/Goji-Berries-Organic-8-oz-p/0028.htm?Click=827

My review: I became familiar with goji berry when I started eating raw food. It is shaped like a raisin, but a bit less plump and a bit longer. It is different then most other dried fruit, because is a “superfood” and have the highest ORAC antioxidant value then any other food. They are very sweet and tasty. You can eat them straight from the bag, use to make a trail mix, soak and blend with other fruit for a smoothie, sweet sauce or dressing and you can also sprinkle it on your green salad. Ypu can also use to make desserts adding them to your cookies, muffins, etc. I usually snack on them out of the back for a quick “energy boost.”

Raw Cacao Nibs (Indonesian)

From Foods Alive website: The original chocolate chip…our truly raw cacao nibs from Bali, Indonesia are a treasure of vitamins and minerals, a delight for the senses and food for the mind. ‘Food of the Gods’, is the literal translation of the name given to everyone’s favorite food! Organic Raw Chocolate has never been so good! To read more: http://www.foodsalive.com/Cacao-Nibs-Indonesian-Organic-8-oz-p/0055.htm?Click=827

My review: Cacao came on the raw food scene with somewhat of an explosive affect. I tried some from other companies, but was not impressed. They tasted very dry and bitter. I stopped using it completely and then, unbeknownst to me, I was sent the cacao products from Foods Alive (as I did not request them for review). I felt that I ought to try them again to see what I think. These ccacao nibs did not taste bitter like those I previously ate and were actually tasty. I prefer to eat them as a trail mix with jungle peanuts and goji berries. You can grind them for truffles, too.

Raw Cacao Powder (Dominican)

From Foods Alive website: This cacao is grown on the small island of the Dominican Republic under a dense forest canopy basking in the shade of tropical fruit trees and Caribbean sun. ‘Food of the Gods’, is the literal translation of the name given to everyone’s favorite food! Organic Raw Chocolate has never been so good!
For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Cacao-Powder-Dominican-Organic-8-oz-p/0056.htm?Click=827

My review: When I opened this cacao powder, there was a sweet smell coming out of the bag, as if I was back in my childhood when I have Nestle Quik and made chocolate milk (although I don’t remember that it smelled as good, or if it did was probably because of the chemicals in the ingredients). It has such a warm aroma and I is probably because of how it is grown. This is a very versatile product packed with antioxidants. You can make “healthy” chocolate milk, smoothies, truffles, fudge, sauce, add to cookies and other desserts.

Raw Carob Powder

From Foods Alive website: Often used as an alternative to chocolate, Carob tree cultivation dates back to historic times. An evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean, it is part of the legume family. The tree produces an edible seeded fruit pod that the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans are said to have eaten raw for natural sweetness. For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Carob-Powder-Organic-8-oz-p/0045.htm?Click=827

My review: I have always been a “fan” of carob and carob powder since my childhood. We would sometimes get it in the pod and I would suck on it and soften the skin and eat it. Others think it is dry and tasteless. My Mom used to make grated apple with some carob on top to help with “bathroom” issues. I always liked it, even if it was a remedy. I have tasted other raw carob powders, but this one, first has a light blond color and also smells naturally sweet. If you are concernd about stimulants like caffeine and theobromine in chocolate, then this is a great alternative. I have used it to make truffles, added to a seed spread, used to make a sauce, smoothies and endless types of desserts.

Raw Maca Powder

From Foods Alive website: Maca is a superfood herb with an outstanding ability to increase energy, endurance and strength. To Andean Indians, organic maca is a highly valuable commodity. Maca is also a favorite of raw-foodists, vegetarians, adventurers, extreme athletes, dessert chefs and food alchemists. For more info: http://www.foodsalive.com/Maca-Powder-Organic-8-oz-p/0029.htm?Click=827

My review: This is one of my favorite superfoods. It comes from Peru and is an adaptogenic root that grows high up in the mountains. I can say it is “YUM!” It has such a nice naturally sweet taste and is strengthening to the body. I like to use this for my smoothies, desserts, nut milks and sweet sauces. I could probably put some on a spoon and eat it like that because it is so good!

This company offers so many great raw organic super foods to nourish and help you to achieve vibrant health. If you have not tried any as yet, now you have more information to do so.
