You know about the dangers of processed foods.

You’ve heard plenty about GMOs, organic foods, vaccines, and many other health controversies.

Health experts will tell you to avoid meat or grains, depending on their belief.

You’ve heard about juicing, green smoothies, detox diets, fasting, and more.

But there’s one principle that nobody talks about. My first mentor Albert Mosseri used to say that it’s the most important one.

Is it emotions?

Is it meditation?

Is it food combining?

None of the above.

This principle is so important because even if you eat a conventional diet, you can use it to significantly improve your health and extend your life.

It’s a principle that allows you to get back in touch with your instincts and let your body decide what’s best for you.

It’s not easy to master at first, but once you practice it, it will become second nature.

What’s this health principle?

True Hunger.

Nobody talks about hunger. In fact, we get told to avoid hunger and eat three square meals a day. “Never skip breakfast,” they say!

When I say “hunger” I don’t mean starvation.

I also don’t mean the sensations that most people mistake for hunger.

You see, there’s a difference between “true hunger” and “false hunger.”

True hunger is when your body really needs food and is most able to digest and assimilate it.

False hunger is your appetite. It’s when food looks or smell good, or when you eat out of habit, or to avoid the symptoms of detox.

The Signs of False Hunger

You can recognize false hunger by paying attention to how you feel. Here are the sensations:

Headache?
Bad, dry, pasty mouth
Stomach gurgling
Feeling depressed, foggy mind
Tightness in stomach
Nausea
Hunger vanishing with time
Desiring a specific food
True hunger is different. It’s a pleasant sensation. It’s a demand for food.

True Hunger Symptoms

Empty stomach?
Watery mouth?
Optimistic mood?
Sharp and happy?
Hunger persisting over time?

When you experience true hunger, you are content with natural food. A simple salad or a bowl of fruit sounds like a great treat.

When you experience false hunger, you want something specific. “I feel like a burger or ice cream.”

With true hunger, you actually feel good.

With false hunger, you feel some discomfort: stomach gurgling, feeling tired, headaches.

False hunger disappears if you want. Wait an hour, and suddenly you’re not so hungry anymore.

True hunger gets stronger with time, and the more you wait, the more you’ll get hungry.

As an experiment to recognize true hunger, you might try skipping breakfast.

If you’re not used to it, you’ll feel “hungry” at around 10 or 11 a.m., and might experience some of the symptoms of false hunger I described.

If you wait, your “hunger” will pass. Most people will only get truly hungry at around noon or even 1 or 2 p.m.

In reality, false hunger is a sign of habituation. Some could say addiction. Your body is used to getting the same amount of food at the same times.

Your body is not even done processing your previous meal that you’re already on to the next. The body gets used to this, and demands food out of habit.

If you break the cycle, you’ll start being more in touch with your true needs.

However, I suggest being careful when trying out this principle. Some people should eat right away if they feel weak.

In my practice as a nutritionist and personal trainer, new
clients are always coming to me telling me they are doing
everything they are “supposed” to be doing, but still, do not
lose weight. Of course, this is frustrating. Losing weight is
hard enough, and to change your eating habits and still see no
results, that’s even more frustrating.

So why do these people not lose weight? If I had to pick the
most common reason why most people’s efforts have proved no
results, I would say it is the deception of artificial
sweeteners and processed diet foods. Yes, you heard right. It is
the diet coke, diet snacks, processed foods and artificial
sweetener in your coffee that is keeping you fat. So how is this
so?

Artificial sweeteners overwhelm your liver

Your liver is your largest internal organ, and it’s responsible
for an astonishing variety of life-sustaining and
health-promoting tasks, including those that make healthy weight
loss and weight management possible. Integral to countless
metabolic processes, the liver supports the digestive system,
controls blood sugar and regulates fat storage. One of your
liver’s most important functions, and the most crucial to your
weight loss, is chemically breaking down everything that enters
your body, from healthy vegetables, to not so healthy fast food,
from healthy water to not so healthy soda.

It’s your liver’s job to distinguish between the nutrients you
need to absorb and the dangerous or unnecessary substances that
must be filtered out of your bloodstream. But when the liver is
clogged and overwhelmed with toxins, like artificial sweeteners,
it can’t do a very effective job of processing nutrients and
fats. If it can not process the nutrients and fats that your
body needs, this will cause you to gain weight or will prevent
you from losing weight. Your liver also produces bile, a crucial
substance for detoxifying our bodies.

It is the job of bile to help our bodies break down the fats we
need and to assimilate fat-soluble vitamins. But when our bile
becomes overly congested with the toxins it’s trying to filter
out, it simply can’t function properly. It becomes thick,
viscous and highly inefficient in breaking down fats. The
result: You are more likely to gain weight and to have a greater
difficulty losing it. So the more toxic your body becomes, the
more difficulty you’ll have losing weight and keeping it off
because your liver just can not work properly to break down fat.

Are artificial sweeteners considered a toxin?

So what qualifies something as a “toxin”? A toxin is anything
that your body does not recognize as a natural food source. The
reason why artificial sweeteners have “zero” calories is because
your body does not recognize them as a food source. For example,
the chemical process to make Splenda (sucralose) alters the
chemical composition of the sugar so much that it is somehow
converted to a completely different molecule than sugar. This
type of “fake” sugar molecule does not occur in nature and
therefore your body does not possess the ability to properly
metabolize it. This is how the makers of Splenda claim that it
has zero calories, because in theory it should not be digested
or metabolized by the body (Although it’s been shown that some
people’s body do absorb u.p to 15% of the artificial sweeteners
they ingest). So the more artificial sweeteners that you consume
in one day, the more you are overwhelming your liver with toxins
and the less able it is to do its job of processing fat.

And what happens if the liver can’t do its job? You can’t lose
weight or worse yet, you gain weight.

What if you don’t use artificial sweeteners? Don’t be fooled.
Almost every diet product on the market has some kind of
artificial sweetener added to it. Even some children’s snacks
are now being made with sucralose (Splenda) and most flavored
waters contain sucralose or aspartame.

Now add up how many things you eat in one day that contain some
form of artificial sweetener. The list may be very long. How
overwhelmed do you think your liver is? Does it have the ability
to work properly? Even if you keep your calories at bay and only
drink Diet Coke with your meals, will you truly get down to the
weight that you want, and stay there? It’s certainly been in my
experience that the answer is “no” and until you are ready to
commit yourself to a healthy way of eating, weight loss will
always be a constant struggle.

What else do sweeteners do? Sweeteners increase appetite

Artificial sweeteners tell your taste buds that, “sweet stuff
has arrived,” which to the brain means, “nutrition has arrived.”

When artificial sweetened drink or food reaches the small
intestine, the receptors find no nutrition. A message is then
sent back to the brain saying, “We’ve been tricked-there’s no
nutrition here.” The appestat (the part of your brain that
triggers satiety) sends the message to “keep eating because we
need nutrition to help process all this fake food and run your
body.” So even after you eat a good portioned healthy meal
(along with your diet coke) you still feel like your starving
all day, or you become very hungry soon after. Your healthy
eating efforts may be sabotaged if you continue to feel hungry
all day. No one likes to feel hungry so you continue to eat more
food until you feel satisfied, which in your effort to lose
weight, may just be too much.

Sweeteners increase our Sweet Tooth

Saccharin (Sweet n Low) is 300 times sweeter than sugar,
aspartame (Equal) is 200 times sweeter than sugar and sucralose
(splenda) is 600 times sweeter than sugar. Such sweeteners can
only increase our sweet tooth and increase our taste of sweet
things. If you can never get rid of your sugar cravings, any
healthy eating plan will be difficult because you will
constantly be craving “sweet”. Artificial sweeteners have also
shown to promote the same blood sugar fluctuations as regular
sugar, which, again will bring on “sugar lows” which will
i.ncrease appetite and cravings. This is not to say, that
something sweet now and again is not ok, but it is those people
who can not control their sugar cravings that are being
sabotaged by these artificial sweeteners.

What are some alternatives to sweeteners?

Giving up sugar and artificial sweeteners may be difficult,
especially if you are accustomed to everything having such a
sweet taste. A wonderful alternative to sugar and artificial
sweeteners is an herb called Stevia. Stevia is an
extraordinarily sweet herb, 200-300 times sweeter than sugar.

Stevia is almost zero calories, so it is perfect for people who
are watching their weight. Unlike sugar, it does not trigger a
rise in blood sugar so you will not get a sudden burst of energy
followed by fatigue and a need for another “fix”. It increases
energy and aids digestion by stimulating the pancreas. Stevia
also presents great advantages over saccharine and other
artificial sweeteners in that it is not toxic. Stevia is a plant
that is found in nature and is not man-made in a laboratory.

Stevia can be found at almost all health food stores such as
Whole Foods, and is listed under the “supplement” section.
Stevia can be used exactly like sugar and artificial sweeteners
to sweeten drinks and it can even be used in baking.

If weight loss or staying away from sweets has always been a
problem for you, take notice of how much artificial sweetener
you have been ingesting. That just may be the culprit. Make a
resolution this year to give up the “fake” stuff and stick to
natural alternatives like Stevia. You will not only be helping
your weight loss efforts but you will also be benefiting your
health. If you or someone you know is addicted to sweet drinks
such as sodas or beverages sweetened with sugar or artificial
sweeteners, try this “Tea Juice” and you will see that weaning
yourself off sugar or sweeteners will be much easier.

Tea Juice

-5-6 bags of any non-caffeine herbal tea of your choice (green
tea, peach tea, berry tea, orange zinger, lemon, etc.)

-3 quarts water

-Stevia powder or liquid to taste

Boil tea bags in a large pot. Add 1-2 full teaspoons of stevia
while still hot. (You may add more or less, based on your
desired sweetness) Let tea cool and then transfer to the
refrigerator in Ice Tea pitchers or individual size water
bottles.

This drink is a great replacement to Diet Coke or Diet Snapple.

Agave Nectar/Syrup

In a recent article now posted on the Weston A. Price foundation’s website, Ramiel Nagel and Sally Fallon Morell write, Agave “nectar” is not made from the sap of the yucca or agave plant but from the starch of the giant pineapple-like, root bulb. The principal constituent of the agave root is starch, similar to the starch in corn or rice, and a complex carbohydrate called inulin, which is made up of chains of fructose molecules. Technically a highly indigestible fiber, inulin, which does not taste sweet, comprises about half of the carbohydrate content of agave.

The process by which agave glucose and inulin are converted into “nectar” is similar to the process by which corn starch is converted into HFCS. The agave starch is subject to an enzymatic and chemical process that converts the starch into a fructose-rich syrup—anywhere from 70 percent fructose and higher according to the agave nectar chemical profiles posted on agave nectar websites.

They are indeed made the same way, using a highly chemical process with genetically modified enzymes. They are also using caustic acids, clarifiers, filtration chemicals and so forth in the conversion of agave starches into highly refined fructose inulin that is even higher in fructose content than high fructose corn syrup.

I will say that a 100% raw food diet may be very appropriate and beneficial for many people. For others however, the all-or-nothing approach just doesn’t work the way they want it to.

There are also many different people who believe many different things. And anything you believe is just that: something you believe. That can change.

I personally don’t think there is any life force in food, something touted in raw circles, besides the raw materials necessary for human nutrition. I haven’t found any proof to bring me to another conclusion for myself.

However, you may disagree with me and still think that there is indeed life force in food or any other thing you want to believe. Nobody needs a rational reason to think or believe anything, and that’s okay.

I have certain beliefs that are not completely rational.

For example, I do believe that everything happens for a reason. That kind of belief is based on my personal experience, and it also works for me. But I know it’s not necessarily “rational”, it’s just something I believe.

Top 5 Reasons to Eat Raw

Nutrient Density
Fruits and vegetables are the most-nutrient-dense foods on the planet, and most of these foods are better eaten raw than cooked.

When we say that a food is “nutrient-dense,” we mean that it has many nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, per calorie. Starchy foods are calorie-dense, but not as nutrient-dense as fruits and vegetables.

In other words, 500 calories of rice or potatoes will contain fewer vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals than 500 calories of kale, or 500 calories of apples.

By eating a diet composed mainly of fruits and vegetables, we take in more nutrients than if we were to eat mostly cooked foods.

There are some exceptions, however. Cooked green vegetables tend to be more nutrient-dense than raw greens, simply because we can eat more of them more easily.

For example, you probably remember taking a huge amount of spinach and cooking it down in a matter of seconds to almost nothing. Well that small cup of cooked spinach is now jam-packed with minerals, and will only take you a few minutes to eat. On the other hand, the same amount of raw spinach would take much longer to chew and eat.

Raw foodists can use the same principle by using a blender and other devices to process their food, such as the case of green smoothies.

Caloric Density

One of the most important concepts to understand in human nutrition is that of caloric density. Caloric density is an estimation of a food’s energy content by weight.

For example, an entire head of lettuce weighing over one pound contains less than 100 calories. That means that the caloric density of lettuce is less than 100 calories per pound.

On the other hand, a single tablespoon of oil contains 120 calories. So you have more calories in 1 tablespoon of oil than in a pound of lettuce. But guess which one is going to fill you up more?

The principle of caloric density is to encourage eating sufficient nutrients while feeling satisfied eating a larger volume of food and a healthy amount of calories.

Studies have confirmed that if you feed people foods of low caloric density, they will eat as much as they want, not be hungry and lose weight, without having to count calories or feel deprived.

Now it’s important to note that nobody will ever really successfully live off a diet of just raw vegetables, and I wouldn’t recommend doing so.

However, you want your diet to contain plenty of raw vegetables by weight.

The concept of caloric density is to look at the overall caloric density of the foods you eat throughout the day.

Low Toxic Load

When cooking carbohydrates (such as potatoes) at high temperatures (baking, frying, etc.), a compound called acrylamide is created. In animal studies, high doses of acrylamide cause cancer and doesn’t sound very promising for your health.

More acrylamide is created when foods are cooked at a higher temperature or for longer periods of time.

We also know that other molecules called “Maillard Molecules” are formed when foods brown and caramelize during cooking. Some people speculate that these new compounds, created in the cooking process, may affect health negatively.

It’s also important to note that the act of being alive and toxic to you, and every bite of food you ever intake will always have varying degrees of “nutriment” and varying degrees of “toxicity”.

While certain forms of cooking appear to be relatively harmless (steaming, for example), the surest way to reduce the amount of toxins in your diet to the lowest level is to eat foods in their raw state.

You Eliminate Everything Else That’s Really Bad for You

One of the main reasons why people get sick is that they eat so many “dead”, pre-packaged foods.

These foods are not only heavily processed, but they contain a long list of suspicious ingredients, including MSG, preservatives, artificial coloring, and more.

Eating a raw food diet automatically eliminates all of this unhealthy food, which means that your diet will be 100% more clean and pure. It will be “wholesome” in the true sense of the word.

When I started the raw food diet, there were no pre-packaged raw snacks available. All that I bought were actual foods: fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Eventually I got into olive oil, but that was a pretty simple product. The “worst” thing that raw foodists bought was jars of olives that could possibly have been marinated in salt water.

Nowadays, a variety of raw food snacks — from kale chips to chocolate brownies — are available. Many of the people making these products do remain true to their nature of keeping them free of artificial flavors and preservatives, but processed foods are still processed foods and eaten in moderation.

Phytochemicals

Raw fruits and vegetables, as well as raw nuts and seeds, are absolutely packed with phytochemicals.

“Phyto” means “plant,” so the term phytochemical designates different compounds in foods that protect against illness. Some phytochemicals can prevent DNA damage caused by free radicals.

You’ve probably heard of antioxidants with cancer-preventing benefits found in many fruits and vegetables and dark leafy greens. Antioxidants are a class of phytochemicals.

Some of the most potent phytochemicals are found in raw foods, and many of them are heat-sensitive. Therefore, eating a raw food diet or a mostly raw diet will give you an abundance of phytochemicals — and this could prove to be one of the main benefits of this diet.

Some notable phytochemicals are to be found in:

The Cruciferous Family — including cabbage, kale, broccoli, etc. These vegetables contain a class of phytochemicals (called sulphoraphane and indole-3-carbinol) that are converted into cancer-fighting enzymes by the liver.
Berries — This includes pomegranate, cherries, blueberries, grapes etc. They contain many phytochemicals that increase immunity.
Citrus fruits — Those fruits contain many phytochemicals (close to the skin), in addition to lots of vitamin C, which is an antioxidant.

Pretty much every raw fruit and vegetable contains health-enhancing phytochemicals. Cooking food sometimes enhance the bio-availability of certain phytochemicals, like lycopene in tomatoes, but in general we get more benefits from eating foods in their raw state.

Conclusion

When we use bad arguments to promote a certain philosophy, it often leads us to make mistakes. Sometimes people oversimplify a health philosophy and refuse to look at new information on top of it all.

There are so many great reasons to eat more raw foods in your diet, I feel that being conscious about the reasons we give for them are important to gaining a better understanding of ourselves and our food!
