31 Ways to Protect Yourself & Your Loved Ones From Hidden Toxic Damage

In their exceptional, informative N.Y. Times best-selling book The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family From Hidden Household Dangers, son and father team Dr. Myron Wentz and Dave Wentz tackle the topic of toxins from room to room, starting with the bedroom and ending with the car, garage, and yard. “Every second of every day, we face an onslaught of unnecessary dangers—toxic chemicals, negative energies, unforeseen side effects, and more—in our modern world,” writes Dave, the younger Wentz.

Myron, his father, who holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology with a specialty in Immunology & Virology from the University of Utah, throws in the statistics: “A new chemical substance is discovered every nine seconds during the workday. Chemists discovered the eighteenth millionth chemical substance known to science on June 15, 1998. Many thousands more have been developed since then.” Wrap your brain around that figure for a moment. It looks like this: 18,000,000 and rapidly increasing!

Their N.Y. Times Best-Selling book is an excellent, comprehensive resource to learn how, exactly, we go about protecting ourselves from all the toxins. Following are just 31 of the numerous simple immediately applicable solutions they pepper throughout the book.*

1. Cut down on the wrinkle-free materials. Five minutes of ironing will spare you from a lifetime of PFC exposure.

2. Make certain your body is wrapped in safe, natural material for at least a third of the day by purchasing pajamas and bedding made from organic cotton.

3. Train and trust your nose. Of all our senses, smell makes the most direct connection between the outside world and your brain.

4. Use 1/2 cup of white vinegar in place of fabric softener in the washer to reduce static cling and soften clothing.

5. Unwrap and air out your dry-cleaned garments for at least two days in an exterior area, like a garage—never in a closet or bedroom.

6. Whenever you launder your sheets, open your windows and leave your mattress exposed in order to allow your bed to off-gas for the day.

7. Unplug your electronic gadgets and appliances when they aren’t being used.

8. Buy nightlights, alarm clocks, and other bedroom electronics that are illuminated with red light, which is less disturbing to melatonin production than white or blue light.

9. Open a window whenever you can to let in some fresh, cleansing air. The air outside is cleaner.

10. Cut down on toxic preservatives like parabens, phthalates, and formaldehyde by first replacing products that sit on your skin all day—like a moisturizers—with more natural, preservative-free alternatives.

11. Avoid aerosol products that have non-spray alternatives. If you must use aerosols, open a window and run your bathroom fan. Wash products off your face as soon as you get home instead of waiting until bedtime. A few additional chemical-free hours each day could add up to more than six years over a lifetime.

12. Don’t use antiperspirant during cooler months or on weekends when it doesn’t matter if you sweat a little.

13. If you’ve been exposed to mercury, consider taking a nutritional supplement containing N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and alpha-lipoic acid to aid in detoxification.

14. Give your immune system a boost with the beneficial bacteria found on a probiotic supplement. Just be sure to look in your pharmacy or grocery store for a product that contains “live and active” cultures.

15. Avoid buying products that contain triclosan and its chemical cousin, triclocarban. Simply wash your hands with regular soap and water to get rid of germs.

16. Start with good antioxidant protection, supplemental B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and lots of CoQ10. Also, try one or more of the foods that have been shown to lower cholesterol, such as steel cut oatmeal.

17. Start each day with an alkalizing glass of lemon water by squeezing a fresh lemon (no sugar) into purified water. Make sure you include the pulp.

18. Trade in your table salt for natural sea salt, which contains a mixture of alkaline complexes. And use pepper or other spices to liven your meals.

19. Maintain a good distance—at least ten feet in front or five feet to the side—between yourself and the microwave when it’s on.

20. If you must use a PTFE-lined pan, keep your burner on medium or low. And never preheat an empty pan.

21. If you plastic wrap, ensure it is LDPE-based plastic, and regardless of what type it is, never use it in the microwave.

22. Purchase reusable grocery bags made of natural materials such as cotton and use them as often as you can.

23. Use a pitcher with an activated carbon filter to reduce contaminants in your water. Although it won’t filter out all pollutants, it’s a good start at a low cost.

24. If you are cleaning with products that you wouldn’t eat, wear gloves!

25. Instead of using an aerosol freshening spray, mist your room with real citrus scent. Simply pour a few drops of orange, lemon, or lime essential oil into a spray bottle of water.

26. Buy the best vacuum you can afford. Optimally, get one with a HEPA “completely sealed” system.

27. Use a regular, corded telephone when at home or at work. Cutting even 20 percent of your daily RF exposure is a step in the right direction.

28. If you have Ethernet ports in convenient areas, you can access the Internet using good, old-fashioned wiring.

29. Don’t set your car’s air conditioner or heater to re-circulated air. Selecting the outside air option on your dashboard will reduce the number of pollutants you’re circulating inside the car.

30. Take a daily vitamin D supplement with at least 2,000 IUs (International Units) during the winter or year-round if you can’t get out into the sun each day.

31. Plant a large, diverse range of plants in your yard—native species are best. The more the merrier and healthier.

Q and A Series: People, Products and the Health of Our Planet – Interview with Dena Mangiamele, Owner of Dena’s Fuel for Fitness

For the ninth interview, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Dena Mangiamele owner of Dena’s Fuel for Fitness.

I actually “met” Dena’s products before I met her. I was at a Whole Foods store in San Diego and I am always looking for new products to try for myself and also review. I came across her vegan/raw products and really liked what I saw. I took down the website from the package and looked it up when I got home. I sent Dena an email and told her I am interested in tasting and reviewing the products. I was planning to go to The Natural Product Expo in Anaheim, CA (in early March) soon after the initial contact and planned to meet her and try all she has to offer. I met Dena and both she and her products are wonderful! I will be doing a video review shortly of all the products and a live interview with Dena. I will have a link when it is posted. In the meantime, check out what Dena has to say below as she answers the questions I sent her, so you can get to know more about the “person” behind the products.

Question #1: Tell me briefly about yourself and why you decided to get involved in the “health” industry?

Fitness and athletic competition has always been a part of my life. I have been a competitive swimmer since I was young and now swim Master’s. I ran track in college with a school record in the 10K, I compete as a triathlete, consistently strength train, and recently discovered Pilates! I soon learned that my athletic performance was greatly influenced by what I ate and began referring to my meals as filling the tank with “fuel.” As I got older, nutrition played an even greater part in my life to help me sustain a high level of intensity with my workouts, maintain an athletic physique, and stay alert and creative in my career and personal life.

I was fortunate to grow up in an Italian family where food and meals were an integral part of my life. My mother was a fabulous cook and baker who served well balanced meals and unknowing to me at the time, always practiced reasonable portion control. I have never been on a diet in my life (my mother would never allow it!) and as a result I have her to thank for my well balanced metabolism. Science supports a diet leaning toward vegetarianism. I used my scientific background (my first career was as a veterinarian) to analyze the results and agree with the findings and have settled in a bit ahead of the curve as a vegan/raw athlete and fit woman.

Dena’s Fuel for Fitness was born when my friends and fellow athletic enthusiasts encouraged me to commercially produce the food I was making after they watched me train and saw the results, noticed my high energy level, and asked me what my secret was. They couldn’t believe that I was vegan and ate about 90% raw as well.

My nutrition and fitness formula is 60% diet, 30% workout regimen, and 10% genetics. You can work out 8 hours a day if you choose, but if you don’t “fuel” your body correctly you will never attain your fitness potential.

I am not on a quest to make everyone vegan. I just want people to understand how easy it is to live a healthier life by paying closer attention to the nutrition:fitness connection. You can adopt some vegan/raw food habits without being a vegan and still make tremendous progress in your overall level of fitness for life.

Question #2: What one message do you want to share with the people of this world that is crucial for their ultimate well-being and longevity?

Remove processed foods and foods containing added sugar. Once you allow your taste buds to reawaken, your cravings become focused on whole foods and without realizing it, those foods will become your “comfort” foods. Your body now does not have to expend its resources to work over-time to digest processed foods, to filter out the toxic preservatives and additives and those same resources can concentrate on fighting disease, environmental toxins, and other exposures we encounter daily or on a chronic basis at full capacity.

Question #3: Tell me more about your business/company and/or products you offer to the public to help them achieve optimal health and well-being?

All of our products are vegan/raw, gluten-free, preservative-free, and do not contain any added sugar. We developed different product varieties for different uses and purposes. We are known for our unique flavor combinations like Mango Raspberry with Basil Crackers or Beet Apple Crackers with Orange and Dill. In addition to the balance of whole foods used in our products we have added Superfoods to boost the overall nutritional profile like adding chlorella to our Green Crackers or maca, acai, and lucuma powder in our Granola Grub. Our fruit based crackers are soft and chewy with the intention that all ages can enjoy our no added sugar snacks not only because their flavor is the “bomb” but the soft texture is helpful for people who may have restrictions with hard, crunchy crackers including very young children (ages 3-5 years), middle school-aged kids that may be wearing braces on their teeth, and older adults who may be Type II diabetics and/or have sensitive teeth. Our Green Crackers for example serve not only as a Superfood cracker but also as a post-workout cracker with 4g of protein per serving.

Question #4: What are your hopes/aspirations/dreams for the future health of the people and the planet?

As people move away from processed foods and sugars and concentrate on a diet based on whole foods, mostly fruits and vegetables we will see a simultaneous enhancement of focus and energy towards work, school, creativity, fitness, and family. No artificial highs and lows from consumption of artificial foods and I believe a clearer, more calm, and productive society.

Question #5: Is there anything else you would like to share with the public?

Knowing you are doing the most you can do to care for and protect your body through careful consideration of every bite and every meal you consume is an experience that can only be described as pure bliss. Something so simple can be so satisfying and so beneficial.

Question #6: I know that there are variables as to how much food/calories each person consumes when eating raw vegan food (based on many lifestyle factors, etc), but is there a basic guideline you would recommend for everyone?

My guideline is I don’t count calories – instead I stay aware of balancing nutrients each meal and daily.

Dena told me that she offers the following discount if you are interested in purchasing by the case:
We offer a discounted price if customers want to purchase a case of product (12 bags or more) and we can mix and match products in the case. If customers want to take advantage of this they will have to email: to place the order rather than go on the web site because we will be customizing the case to whatever products they choose. All the products are amazing. Even if you have never tried them, you will not be disappointed. Also, you can email dena and ask her what she recommends. She will not steer you wrong because she created the products!

Company Review – Nature’s Tears EyeMist

Nature’s Tears EyeMist in business since 1998

I came across this company quite a few years ago at Expo West in Anaheim. I wasn’t familiar with the product, but I took a sample, nonetheless, and I am glad that I did. This product far exceeded my expectations. This is not an eye drop, but an eye mist. It has no additives, preservatives or chemicals. It is made of “tissue culture grade water” (you can read more about this on their website) which is a high grade water with no impurities or contaminants.

I, personally don’t have serious eye irritation, but it has come in handy when it has been dry outdoors or I start rubbing my eye and then it bothers me. You simply hold the canister at one side of the face about 12 inches away and then with eyes open press the canister and move across face for one to two seconds. This creates a mist of natural humid moisture around the eyes and face and then the eyes will absorb what they need. You can use it at much as you want or need without any dosage limit.

There are so many benefits to this product such as: dry irritated eyes, when wearing contacts, when working at the computer, for eye allergies, for dry indoor air, when traveling on an airplane, for dryness from diabetes, lupus, etc. As you can see it is a very useful product and one that I carry with me in my purse and also have one in my home.

I highly recommend this product as a much better and healthier then eye drops, as it really works. If it passes my extremely high purity test then you know it is great! I would not try and “sell” you something if I don’t believe it in and also if I have not used it myself.

Disclaimer: I was not sponsored to write this, but I did receive a sample of the product(s). These are strictly my opinions. I only review products that I, myself would use and purchase.
