You may have heard of The S.O.S. Free Plan (and I don’t mean the distress signal) what about The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™?

You may have heard of The S.O.S. Free Plan (and I don’t mean the distress signal) what about The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™?

Maybe or maybe not, but the S.O.S. I am referring to is an adaptation of your vegan food plan that eliminates Salt, Oil and Sugar. I say this because I am a whole food vegan and in the S.A.D {Standard American Diet} world, I don’t believe they could care less about this, sad to say. It is used by True North Health Center in California and others.

I, myself, have done various cleanses and fasts that documented on my blog (including coconut water cleanses, water fasts and dry fasting) and now I am trying something different. I got an email last month from Frederic Patenaude and subscribe to his posts, as he always has interesting information to share, as well as the knowledge he has culled from many years in the natural foods world. I don’t necessarily need to go on a “diet” to lose weight and detest that word anyway, because connotes going on and off something and I ascribe to be on a program that is constant, consistent and for the long term, where get results and don’t yo-yo back and forth, as it’s harmful to the health.

Here is a link to Frederic’s article: http://www.fredericpatenaude.com/blog/?p=4848

So what I decided to do and coined a new term, is The S.O.S.O. Free Plan™
What is that? Similar to the S.O.S. program, but I added no overt fats to it. Dr. Doug Graham recommends, to eat minimal added fats, but I’m not saying this is good for everyone, although when you read the link to the article above there is a comment on the bottom about someone who has been eating very low fat for a long time and has had good results.

Frederic mentioned that the body needs 90 days to adapt, so I decides to try this for the next 3 months, but do it 1 day at a time and then progress from there. I do eat whole food plant based, but I have done more snacking (but everything is food based) in the last number of years and have gotten lax with not consuming oils when buy products, although do not use it for my own food preparation. Also, used packaged products with cane sugar, maple syrup, salt and would like to eliminate them from my food plan and get back to eating foods in their natural wholesome state and not buy packaged products or minimize them at best. There is 1 item that has a minimal amount of salt that will be consuming because I do eat Food for Life Ezekiel Sprouted Tortillas for The Sabbath and Holydays, as it is the best out there because is flourless and without added oil. Other then that will be keeping to this 100%, G-d willing. This means will have to add more volume of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans to make up for the things will not be consuming.

Here’s a list of what will not be eliminating:
1- Oils – since do not cook with it, means products that use it as an ingredient
2- Nut butters
3- Nuts and Seeds
4- Avocados
5- Vegan Yogurt – as all are made with nuts and usually added salt, as well
6- Salt
7- Sugar (except for stevia which is not a sugar and make also look to get yacon syrup or if can find yacon powder, as is not a sugar, but from a Peruvian root that happens to be sweet and is also a prebiotic)
8- Coconuts

I am not saying it is going to be easy, as my body has to “detox” off of those items and I may feel a lack of satisfaction in my daily consumption and also there is the mental, emotional and psychological brain chemical reactions to consider, as well. As I said above, will simply be adding more volume of the other foods and actually, when you look at the cost of buying organic produce it seems expensive, but really it is not, it’s what you buy that is packaged, canned, boxed, etc that costs more because the price gets “bumped up” or inflated from the time the company makes it till it comes to the store, as everyone wants a “piece of the action” to make a profit. I am also used to grabbing a quick nutrient dense snack at work of a whole food bar and all of them have something that will be eliminating, so will have to have other snacks instead.

What I plan to do is document my experiences during this time on my blog. I am not sure will have time to do it daily, but will do my best to share with you what happene on all levels: physical, mental, emotional and psychological.

Look forward to sharing with you, as I embark on this new adventure.
I also want to say, that I do not plan to eliminate overt fats completely for more then 90 days and may even return to some after 30 days, depending on how I am feeling. My goal is to try to stay free of all salt, sugar and oils for the long term.

Q & A Series: People, Products and The Health of Our Planet – Interview with Mariam Kinkladze, co-founder and CEO of Organic Gemini

My Comments: I first found this company when perusing Amazon for products and was intrigued by it. Then I met some of the people from the company at Expo West in Anaheim and tried the product for the first time. It was, Yum at 1st Bite! The Tiger Nut is chewy on the outside and sweet, tasty and satisfying. I also tried the Raw Granola and Horchata – which incorporate the Tiger Nut into them and those where just as wonderful. I look forward to seeing more products made using this amazing tuber/small root vegetable from Spain. It has numerous health benefits as the #1 resistant starch/prebiotic. I also love that they do not use agave or cane sugar to sweeten their Horchata drink, but instead use dates. Thanks for bringing this great product to the USA!

I want to give thanks to Ludovica Vigliardi Paravia, PR Representative and Europe Sales Coordinator at Organic Gemini, for all her efforts and assistance.

For the twenty-fourth interview, I have the pleasure of introducing you to
Mariam Kinkladze, co-founder and CEO of Organic Gemini founded by Mariam Kinkladze and George Papanastasatos in 2013.

Question #1: Tell me briefly about yourself and why you decided to get involved in the “health” industry?

Healing myself from a cancerous cyst following a raw diet showed me how lost we are as a society and how much real-food diet relates into health. Learning and living with an awareness of proper health is empowering. I’ve spent a lot of time educating myself through books, travel and advice from fellow health ambassadors I’ve met along the way. When I realized how much confidence I had found from knowing what to put in my body, I started feeling better in more than just a physical sense.

That was one of my biggest reasons for getting involved in the foods industry. I want to remind people that you can contribute to a better tomorrow for ourselves. Treat your body well, take time in the day to clear your mind and your soul with feel satisfied.

Question #2: If you were stranded on a desert island and were allowed to take only 5 items with you (they can be food, books or specific products that are all health-related), what would they be and why?

1. Tigernuts
2. Water filter
3. Photos of my loved ones
4. Toothbrush
5.Yoga mat–Any time, any place..stop drop and yoga. This would definitely be on a top 5 necessity list for life. Also, I’m sure if I were on a desert island a yoga mat could comfortably double as a cushion for sleep. haha.

Question #3: What one message do you want to share with the people of this world that is crucial for their ultimate well-being and longevity?

We all live our own personal story. What we add and take out of it is up to us, so we have the power to close our own chapters and write our own introductions.. Keeping that in mind, look for things to smile about, remind yourself daily of what you have and live gratefully.

Question #4: If someone could afford to purchase only one product at this moment to start their journey towards better health (food or health-related), what would you recommend and why?

A nice blender goes a long way. I’ve been experimenting so much lately with my own fruit smoothies and TigerNuts, that I’ve been soaking at home. They’ve been turning out great and my son also enjoys the entertainment of the colors. Very versatile invention in the sense of what you can make in it. I also believe that having fun while you make food gives you the best recipes. Splurge on a nice blender, save so much in the long run!

Question #5: Tell me more about your business/company and/or products you offer to the public to help them achieve optimal health and well-being?

Organic Gemini is on a mission to share the beneficial beauty of earth’s ancient super root, the TigerNut. Our company is only 1 year young, but it’s been a constant cycle and mission to spread our love through Organic living. We’ve found multiple functionalities to incorporate Organic TigerNuts into your daily living, and the best part is how much fun we’ve had doing so. We offer Cold-Pressed Horchata, Flour, Oil and Granola, along with demonstrations and a verbal education on how to use our products in day to day cooking. To me, education is most important..especially when you set out to talk about a vegetable with such traditionally cheeky name.

Question #6: What are your hopes/aspirations/dreams for the future health of the people and the planet?

My dreams for the planet all come down to Proactive Awareness and Empowerment of the people through nutrient dense diet. Together, with those things we can start a movement in ourselves and in our community. Positivity spreads!

Question #7: Who is your greatest hero and why?

My greatest hero is my husband, who also happens to be my business partner. I find new inspiration through him daily and he reminds me why we’re on this journey to support something we truly believe in.

Question #8: Is there anything else you would like to share with the public?

I am already saying way more than I’d normally do.

Question #9: I know that there are variables as to how much food/calories each person consumes when eating raw vegan food (based on many lifestyle factors, etc), but is there a basic guideline you would recommend for everyone?

There is no such thing as the best diet – Follow your intuition like our ancestors did. Listen to your body, note how you feel after you eat certain foods.

As an added bonus, I have asked some questions of employees who work at the company: Robert Gleyberman, Assistant to Director of Operations; Chris, E-commerce and Demo Coordinator and Ludovica Vigliardi Paravia, PR Representative and Europe Sales Coordinator at Organic Gemini

Question #1: How did you come to work for this company?

Robert: I came to work for this company by odd chance. I was perusing Craigslist for an interesting job and stumbled upon Organic Gemini. I have a degree in biology and have always been interested in health, so I thought that this would be a natural fit- and it is!

Chris: I was at Whole Foods and the TigerNut Horchata packaging caught my eye, I beelined for it. A few days later I met someone who worked at Organic Gemini and she asked me if I would like to be a brand ambassador for them. It was more than just a coincidence! A month later, I asked her if my fiancee could come onboard too!

Ludovica: I met Mariam Kinkladze when we were both students at Columbia University. Mariam was looking for a PR representative to help increase media exposure for Organic Gemini and, since I truly believed in her company from day 1 and already had experience in PR, she offered me this incredible opportunity.

Question #2: What has been your own personal “health” journey and what do you
foresee for the future?

Robert: My personal health journey started last fall when I wanted to get fit for a vacation to Aruba. Long story short, almost 7 months later I still continue to work out everyday and make smarter food choices. Organic Gemini’s products have done nothing but accelerate my journey, as my immune system has seen an improvement thanks to all of the probiotics that I have been consuming. I foresee the future as being filled with even better choices regarding health and I cannot wait to continue my journey.

Chris: I am beyond excited about our new TigerNut Horchata+ Green. It’s a wonderful way to get in a healthy dose of powerful green veggies each day. I felt and looked my best when I was making green smoothies in the morning, but I had to add in a fruit to make it taste enjoyable. Our new green horchata is perfect for people like me who want to eat the most powerful green veggies but still be delicious!

Ludovica: I always loved to workout and eat healthy food. However, working for Organic Gemini, has made me more aware of the foods that have healing properties and the foods that we should avoid. When I first started working for Organic Gemini I did not know what a TigerNut was and where it was grown. Now, I can’t stop eating them and I am so happy to have found such a nutrient dense food rich in fiber!

Coconut Secret – Low Glycemic Coconut Products

Coconut Secret – Low Glycemic Coconut Products

The company, Coconut Secret, has “tapped” into a way to create great products made from the sap of coconut that are natural alternatives to traditional products on the market. To me, they are above board then even some of the “natural” products you see in health food stores and supermarkets. Some, of course, are better then others and some, I see as being worse for you then eating dirt or grass from your yard. So, “all products are not created equal,” in my humble opinion.

The owners, Leslie and Randy, found a personal need for their family and decided to create their own products because there were none on the market that met their expectations. As the saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention.” They took this opportunity and ran with it and I am happy that these products came about because they are not only good for you, but they also taste good! You can forget about your traditional soy sauces, vinegars, honey and sugars because these products from Coconut Secret, in my opinion, will eliminate the conventional unhealthy ones from your pantry.

Coconut Secret does everything right and never cut corners in making their products. Most products (except for some of their chocolate bars that have dairy and not 100% organic) are 100% Organic, Vegan, Gluten-Free, Non-GMO, Kosher and no MSG in their soy-free seasoning sauce.

The benefits of using the sap of the coconut blossoms is that it’s very low glycemic in and of itself and also rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, minerals, amino acids and close to a neutral pH.

Another thing I am very pleased that the company opted to do when making their products, is to use glass bottles and not plastic. We all know that plastic, even the supposed non-toxic ones that are called BPA-free, likely still have some chemical components that may leach into the product. I have never personally had a BPA-free container tested for what it is made of in a lab, but it would be interesting to know that. Perhaps that can be researched further by “googling” it. I am not a “fan” of using plastics at all. I do understand that not all products can be packed in glass for various reasons, including cost, safety, etc. To me glass is the best option for a number of reasons: 1- no leaching of chemicals into food from plastic and the fact that it’s sitting in the plastic for who knows how long while it is sitting on the shelf in the store, 2- you can reuse the glass bottles or jars for many different purposes: food, gifting something to others, using as your water bottle and if nothing else, recycle it, 3- my opinion is that they have a better shelf-life, as well, 4- the food in the glass is much healthier for you, because why would/how could you want to make an organic product and then house them in plastic? To me, that is similar to buying fresh, healthy, ripe and organic produce and then washing it with chemically-laden tap water. Another example would be someone who was told they needs to exercise for health, so they decide to ride a bicycle, but smoke a cigarette while doing so. I think you get the message. Glass is best! I would go so far as to say, I never buy “plastic” water, because even if it is pure water, it has still been living in plastic for who knows how long and chemicals have been leaching into it. My tip to you: when traveling by plane and you can not take a glass or stainless water bottle, do not buy plastic water. The best bet, is to take produce that is rich in structured water that will hydrate you and also provide you with other beneficial vitamins and minerals. Some suggestions: apples, oranges, grapefruit, grapes, kiwis, melons, peaches, plums, nectarines, pears, celery, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers.

Also, their products has simple easy to read and understand ingredients that you do not need a degree in chemistry or the like to understand. The 3 coconut products I discuss here, are actually only made of one ingredient, that being coconut sap from the coconut blossoms (except for the coconut aminos that adds sea salt).

The 3 products I review here are:
Raw Coconut Vinegar, Raw Coconut Nectar and Coconut Aminos.

1) Raw Coconut Vinegar: This product is by far better tasting then any vinegar I have had in the past, including apple cider, umeboshi plum and rice vinegar. It smells exactly like traditional apple cider vinegar, in my opinion, and has higher nutritional value then similar products in its amino acid, vitamin and mineral content.

It also has the added benefit of being a great source of FOS – fructooligosaccharides – which is a prebiotic that feeds/promotes the growth of “good” intestinal bacteria, which are in fruits and vegetables, including, apples, pears, garlic, onion and asparagus (which differs from a probiotic, which is the “good”/beneficial gut bacteria that aids in intestinal/digestive health, such as found in foods like sauerkraut, miso, kefir, kimchi and kombucha). So, it taste yummy plus you improve your digestion – what a great concept! You can sprinkle it on your salad, add it to dressings, marinades, to season rice for sushi, in spreads, sauces and patés. It can also be used for cleansing internally, as well as skincare.

The reason it is called “raw,” is because it’s processed without any heat and therefore, is also rich in enzymes. It is made in small batches, which means it is fresher and they have more control over the results. This vinegar is naturally aged for 8 months to 1 year to give it the distinct flavor, which does not taste coconutty at all! It also does not need any refrigeration.

2) Raw Coconut Nectar: This is one of the best alternatives to sweeteners on the market today. If you want a product that pours like honey, is as sweet as any other sweetener, can be used in all your desserts, does not need refrigeration, and is safe for diabetics, has a low glycemic index, then this is the product you ought to buy and use regularly!

There are so many products on the market today if you have a “sweet tooth,” and the majority are made with unnatural, chemically processed ingredients, colored with carcinogenic dyes and then use products like aspartame, splenda, nutrasweet – which are actually all the same thing and produced by Monsanto. If you are not aware of them, they produce r-BGH [bovine growth hormone] milk, and GMO [genetically modified organisms] foods which have already proven to not help with the hunger issue in the world and also cause the plants to need to be sprayed with more pesticides, herbicides, etc. The yield are usually lower and animal fed GMO feed have developed all kinds of problems/illnesses/diseases and when they are fed non-GMO feed the problems all go away. If you would like to do your own experiment to see what happens, take an organic corn on the cob and conventionally grown corn on the cob [which is more likely then not to be GMO] and put them both outside and put a popsicle stick in the ground next to each one and write organic and conventional to distinguish the two of them. Then see which one gets mostly eaten by the birds and creatures. This will tell you a lot! Besides the fact, that if the companies decide to inject something into the seed that you may be deathly allergic to, such as peanut, soy, etc, you will never know.

Now you know why to stay away from the chemical products on the market, but even the supposed “natural” sweeteners may not be good for hypoglycemic and diabetic people, of which their is a very large population of the world in these categories, including very young children.

Their have been an influx of products using agave nectar, especially with raw food snack products, which are better for you, but adding agave changes that and it is tauted as being a better/healthier alternative. Most people do not know that it is actually worse or on par with HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) which causes numerous health problems. I will have an article on my blog coming up in the future that discusses this subject. So you know, it is not raw, is highly processed and high glycemic, which is not good for anyone, even if you do not have any issues with your pancreas, but over time, it could lead to it. I was even surprised that a company I know who bottles the best raw organic coconut water, in my opinion, are using agave as a sweetener in their raw tea! They already have access to the coconuts, so why aren’t they using the coconut nectar from the blossoms or contacting Coconut Secret to use their nectar? I hope to get in touch with the company soon, so this can be remedied!

3) Coconut Aminos: Are you still using Kikkoman, Braggs or any of the other soy sauces on the market? So you know, most soy is GMO (as explained above) and even with the ones that say organic, there is still the issue of cross-contamination if it was planted in a field where there are other gluten crops growing or grown in soil that was previously used to grow gluten crops (i.e. wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut, etc). This is an issue, especially for those who have gluten sensitivities/intolerance or celiac disease, but even for though of us who are staying away from gluten, as a preventative measure, because gluten, can reck havoc on the body, which specifically begins in the colon (where the health of the body begins) and cause numerous health problems. Think of the word gluten – sounds like glue and who wants something in their body that acts like glue, I don’t! That is why this is the perfect alternative to soy sauce and has a similar flavor without the soy. You can use it on your salads, in stews, dressings, sauces, bean dishes, etc.

Coconut Secret also sells other great coconut products, such as coconut flour, coconut sugar, etc and you can check them all out on their website: http://www.coconutsecret.com

Also check out my video review: http://www.youtube.com/TheRawsomeVeganGal

In closing, I hope that all markets/stores, in time will only carry products such as sold by Coconut Secret. A lot of companies can learn from them (and I wish they would) as to how to make great products for health and not compromise or “cave in” to cut corners based on their own selfish needs or being pressured by governmental “hounds” as opposed to the concerns and long term benefits to the people and the planet. They have their priorities right and straight! A big thank you and gratitude always!
