The bright yellow spice turmeric is called the golden nutraceutical. And it is the latest morning super food shot of Manhattan supermodels and Hollywood celebrities. Raw turmeric shots may be new to Americans, and curry may be the British favorite food, but Indian curry dishes are thousands of year old. It is also commonly used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Turmeric has an impressive chemical profile assuring its popularly in both Eastern and Western countries. Let’s look at the science and find out if raw turmeric shots are valuable for your health.

What Makes Turmeric So Healthy?

Curcumin is the medicinal component in turmeric (Curcumin longa) that gives it the bright yellow color. The active compounds in curcumin are curcuminoids. These substances are potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant plant compounds, with an impressive scientific resume.

Curcumin helps lower C-reactive protein that causes heart disease. Scientific studies show that curcumin increases the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the body including raising glutathione levels. It enhances stem cells. It reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease by helping boost HDL (“good”) cholesterol and lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. It increases nitric oxide in the blood, improves blood circulation, and reduces insulin resistance.

However, turmeric is healthy for the intestinal tract when not absorbed. That’s likely the advantage of turmeric shots.

Turmeric works synergistically with ginger root. In fact, they belong to the same plant family Zingiberaceae. Adding fresh ginger to a turmeric shot balances and energizes the mixture, and enhances the flavor.

Fresh turmeric rhizomes are pencil thin and about two inches long. Since less than 3% of fresh turmeric contains curcumin, the active compound, you have to use several rhizomes per shot. To make a turmeric power shot, add curcumin powder.

How to Make a Turmeric Power Shot:
Combine fresh peeled turmeric and ginger rhizomes in a blender with pure water or coconut juice. Use a NutriBullet or other high-speed blender, blend for a few minutes.
To boost effectiveness, add 500-1000 mg of 95% curcumin extract powder.
Add fresh lemon, raw honey, or sea salt, to balance the flavor.
If you like it hot, sprinkle a dash of black pepper or cayenne powder on top!
To increase the bioavailability of raw turmeric, try blending your power shot with a dash of fresh ground black pepper and a teaspoon of coconut butter.

One of nature’s most valuable herbs for human health, turmeric is considered safe to take daily. But, very high concentrations of curcumin extract may damage DNA and suppress immunity. Magnesium

So essential for so many of our daily activities and yet somehow so lacking for so many people. I attribute it to a combination of poor digestion/absorption and what I call the beige-food diet, lacking in fresh greens. Today we will discuss why magnesium is so amazing for us, where to get it from whole raw vegan foods and what it sometimes looks like to not have enough of this wonder-mineral.

More than half of the magnesium in our bodies is in our bones, a quarter of it in our soft tissues and fluids and another quarter in our muscles. Magnesium is partly responsible for maintaining cells’ electrical charges and also enables our cells to reproduce. Magnesium is important in energy production and protein forming. Magnesium is responsible for proper muscle function and proper insulin function. Now that’s important! With the ability to alter our metabolism and make our muscles (including our hearts) work properly, magnesium is the second-most prevalent mineral in our bodies after potassium.

A University of Virginia study followed people with adequate levels of magnesium for a fifteen year period and found that they had a 31% lower chance of developing Metabolic Syndrome compared to the rest of the population studied. Insulin resistance also burns up magnesium in the body leading to quite the downward spiral. In a separate double-blind study supplementation with Magnesium was shown to improve markers for metabolic syndrome in individuals that were previously deficient.

Some foods that are highest in magnesium are spinach, kale, collard greens, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, almonds, dried figs and chocolate. The nuts and seeds can be soaked and sprouted to reduce the phytic acid, making the magnesium more absorbable but soaking chocolate doesn’t really work out. I try to remember that chocolate is high in magnesium but much of it is difficult for us to absorb. Of course I love green juice but green smoothies and soups can also be great ways to get some green power. Magnesium deficiency can appear in the form of blood sugar dysregulation as we discussed above and also in poor memory, fatigue, dizziness, constipation, high blood pressure, anxiety, tremors, cramps, weakness and deficiencies of other minerals such as potassium and calcium. Magnesium can help with sleep and depression. There is a reason why the brand “natural calm” has that name. Is your gut infested with dangerous belly bugs?
Chances are that it is, especially considering the overuse of friendly bacteria-killing agents like chlorinated water, antibiotics, and high sugar foods.

These are all triggers that kill off good bacteria and provide a breeding ground for bad bacteria… ultimately leading to a condition called “dysbiosis” (or an imbalance of good to bad bacteria in your gut).

Why is this a problem?
First of all, 80% of your immune system resides around your gut and communicates directly with the bacteria within it.
Hundreds of studies have shown that dysbiosis creates a host of immune disorders and makes you more susceptible to frequent colds and infections, and even worse.

#1 – Kefir

Kefir means “feel good” in Turkish. Kefir is a probiotic beverage made with either kefir grains or a powdered kefir starter culture. Kefir grains eat the sugar in a food, leaving behind a more nutritious probiotic-rich beverage because of the lactic acid and beneficial bacteria it adds.

#2 – Kombucha

Probiotics maintain a balance in your gut between beneficial bacteria and pathogenic bacteria. Drinking chlorinated water and the use of antibiotics destroys all living organisms in your gut including beneficial bacteria. Stress can also contribute to an overgrowth of harmful bacterial. During a delivery through the birth canal, a newborn picks up bacteria from his/her mother. These good bacteria are not transmitted when a Cesarean section is performed and have been shown to be the reason why some infants born by Cesarean section have allergies, less than optimal immune systems, and lower levels of gut microflora.

A lack of sufficient amounts of beneficial bacteria weakens your immune system and leaves you open and exposed to germs, bad bacteria, and virus that can make you sick.
