Topic: The Eyes Are The ________

Monday March 07, 2010

I am continuing with the fill in the blank topics and relaying them to health. This is another one, most of us have heard or read somewhere. The usual ending is “windows to the soul.” I agree with it, but I would also say this, “beauty you behold for yourself and share with others.” What I mean is, when you look at yourself in the mirror, you see your eyes and that connects you with your own self-love and self-worth. There are those who don’t have any feelings for themselves (i.e. know who they are inside and simply LOVE THE SELF!) that are strong enough to know for sure that they are good, valuable and worthwhile. Once you have this, it radiates out to the world and they can feel it coming from you, even without you saying anything. It shows on your face, in your body language (how you carry yourself). You are proud and you walk around with your head held high (but not with your nose up in a snooty/obnoxious way), good posture and sweet gestures. This is not always inborn/inbred, because some of us grow up feeling worthless, helpless, etc. because we are told that ‘you will not amount to anything in life’ or ‘are not good enough.’ Like a baby first learning to walk, sometimes we have to learn/re-learn who we are and the value that we have. Whether you are a woman or a man, treat yourself right! Be good to yourself! It is not about being selfish, it is about valuing yourself and taking the time to do what you enjoy and be around people who feel the same way. Find a support group/person who you can talk to and share the love with (as well as, yourself, and I am not talking about an intimate relationship, rather a close and loving friendship where you can share your time together and value each other). Something else you can do, is to create positive affirmations that you repeat daily to give yourself value, goodness and worth. Say these while looking in the mirror for a stronger connection. Also, you can write them down and post them somewhere that you will notice (such as the bathroom mirror and perhaps laminate it because it would get wet from showering). I am worthwhile! I am valuable! I am good! At the end of saying things like these I mentioned, say “And so it is!” To make it be the truth.

Topic: Beauty Is In ________

Friday March 05, 2010

The word beauty is defined in a dictionary as: the inherent quality in an object of pleasing the eye, ear, or mind; a particular grace or excellence; a fine specimen. Instead of filling in with “the eye of the beholder,” I would say, “your hands” (meaning, you have the power and the right to make it happen). How so? A dear woman, who I call my friend, Tonya Zavasta, totally changed her lifestyle by eating raw vegan food and doing hot yoga (Bikram yoga). She reversed aging and also allowed herself to become beautiful. Please check out her website, www.beautifulonraw.com and check out her before and after photos, as well as, of other people who have become ‘living beauties.’ She has written numerous books, sells exceptional natural beauty products (that she uses herself) and travels the world teaching women (and men) to find their way to the beauty they all have within ourselves and most importantly by way of our lifestyle choices. You need to take charge! No one can rely on others to make their lives the way they want to be. You can get Botox, cellulite removal, plastic surgery, take pills, potions, supplements, etc but will you be able to achieve the truly inherent beauty that comes from the inside out. I would so NO! When you view before and after pictures of those who used natural means to give them the health and the look of a supermodel, you say, “I want that!” Yes! You can have every part of it, as long as you are willing to make the effort and changes that are necessary. I have said this before, and I will say it again; take the first step (whatever that is for you) and go slowly and gradually so that you do not give up on it after a short time. From my own personal example, I’ve been a vegan for 20 years (now raw, as well) and I am still so passionate about it (even more so because I what to share the wealth of knowledge I have with others and reach out to the world with this information)! I am also never bored with the food I eat and I feel and know that it is important to eat a variety of foods and not the same things every day (that is definitely one of the reasons I know that people are more likely to stop eating a certain way because it gets boring to eat the same, lets say, 3 things, day in day out).

Topic: If At 1st You Don’t Succeed __

Wednesday March 03, 2010

I know that this one is heard a lot, more so when we are/were children. I would fill in the blank differently then what we know. My words would be, step back and go for a walk, meditate, etc (do something other than what you are working on) to get a new perspective. If you are stuck in a rut you will not be able to achieve anything at all even if you keep forging ahead. For example, you are at work and there is a project that you need to complete, but you can’t seem to get ‘over the hump’ (like those last 5 pounds you try to lose). You are so focused on getting it done that you don’t realize your perspective may be blurred. Instead of trying to grind through it, take a break (hey! there are those who go out for a smoke break because they can’t indulge indoors {and I am not suggesting you start smoking ever!}…how about you taking a 5 minute break to go outside and get some fresh air and sunshine or maybe sit outside quietly and close you eyes to let go of all the stress that is bogging you down). When you return to your desk, you may have that Aha! moment and come up with the best idea for your project. You can use this technique with anything in your life. You are being good to yourself, by backing away from what is making you stuck and then starting anew, like a rose that needs to be pruned and cut back on occasion to allow it to start over and then bloom once again.

Topic: Practice Makes ________

Monday March 01, 2010

I have returned back to the fill in the blank topics and hope I can continue to come up with more of them. If you have any ideas for a good one, please send me a comment. The one we always hear is “practice makes perfect.” How about practice makes you happier/healthier/wiser/better. As, I mentioned in another post, I don’t believe we can ever be “perfect,” but we can still strive for it. If you continue to work at something and repeat it over and over, you are bound to have some type of success with it. From a personal example, perhaps you have read my 42 day journal of the cleanse I did (you can read it from the beginning if you click in the archive on December 2009). How I was able to succeed in doing one for such an extended amount of time, is because I started 7 years ago by first doing a 1 day fast and then progressed from there in small increments. My body got used to doing periodic fasts-cleansing that it was not very difficult for me to embark on the one I recently completed. If you are trying to eat more fruits and vegetables or embark on a fitness regimen, etc you need to work at making it happen. This takes time and effort on your part and eventually it will become (a) part of your life, like brushing you teeth daily. The word ‘practice,’ is defined in the dictionary as: performance or execution as opposed to theory; custom or habit. It is something you do and most of us try/would like to do it well. My feeling is that if you are trying something new or making any type of change, it is best to start slowly, so as not to become overwhelmed to the point where you will simply be ready to discard it for any number of reasons (such as lack of time, money, energy, space, willpower, etc). A baby doesn’t learn how to walk overnight, there are specific stages they go through and the baby continues to persevere to that end. Since a baby is freer in its thinking, it doesn’t merely give up at the first sign of failure (i.e. falls down and then picks itself up again and attempts to stay upright and balanced).
